Sleeping Dogs offers a lot to experience. The Hong Kong setting presents an entirely different tone and theme to sandbox games while offering a polished combat system and driving mechanic. The plot is intriguing for the most part, though some of the side-missions are annoying. The overall package that Sleeping Dogs offers is amazing. It is nice to finally see a game that presents a world with flawed characters rather than the hero stereotype. The hours of enjoyment that Sleeping Dogs provides is incredible. Sleeping Dogs is one of the best sandbox action games in 2012.

I was excited for Sleeping Dogs, even before it was renamed after Activision dropped it. Now, having played for hour upon hour within its world, I can’t find any justification for that decision. Activision should deeply regret letting this one go, as the developers have delivered an outstanding product that – and here’s the kicker for Kotick – I would gladly buy year-on-year. Visually magnificent, technically near-perfect, and deep beyond all expectations, Sleeping Dogs now sits comfortably astride Saints Row as a legitimate contender for the throne should GTA ever be toppled. We might wait a long time for that to happen, but I’ll gladly spend it knee-deep in Triads, fast cars and Sleeping Dogs.

Sleeping Dogs provides players with an engrossing narrative set to the atmospheric and richly-detailed backdrop of Hong Kong. An extensive array of additional missions and activities ensure there are always opportunities for further adventure and action to discover while roaming the streets. Along with an impressive presentation for both the visuals and music, Sleeping Dogs is without doubt the sleeper hit of this year for open world action games.

I had a tremendous time playing Sleeping Dogs. I wanted to give this a ten out of a ten. I truly did. However I had some slight setbacks with glitches and a feeling that the ending was a bit rushed. It wasn’t a bad ending but they could have drug it out a bit more to including a mission set about a character that screws you over near the end. That’s all I’ll say about that. Trust me, that isn’t a spoiler. People are screwing you and others over throughout the entire story and it is so fun to watch play out.
GamesRadar (Aug 16, 2012)
Sleeping Dogs is a fun and forward-thinking sandbox game. The missions may be samey, but the core experience is varied and enjoyable. Great stuff.
Destructoid (Aug 14, 2012)
Between its fantastic combat, shooting, presentation, storytelling, and RPG elements, Sleeping Dogs has just raised the demands for what it'd take for GTAV to get the throne back. Good luck, Rockstar.

The only let down of this fun free roam game is the lack of multiplayer (Sleeping Dogs only offers leaderboards). If you think you’ve got what it takes to infiltrate the Triad organization Sleeping Dogs will put you to the test.

Giant Bomb (Aug 14, 2012)
It's derivative as hell, but Sleeping Dogs' borrowed ideas are of a high enough quality to form an entertaining open-world experience.
Entertainium (Oct 08, 2012)
Sleeping Dogs is not a perfect game in the slightest. It has certain failures and shortcomings, but these pale in comparison to the great elements of the experience. The addictive, ever-changing combat coupled with a brilliant narrative supported by superb voice acting makes the game easily one of the most entertaining I have played so far this year. Unfortunately, Sleeping Dogs has sold quite poorly. It didn’t get a big marketing push that would have most likely come with a normal Activision publication and the title is not particularly memorable. In recent weeks the price has dropped significantly to try to rectify the current sales predicament. This lowered price should not be any indication that the game is mediocre. Even at full price, Sleeping Dogs is a worthwhile purchase–the overall experience was that good. We should all be grateful that Square-Enix saw the potential in Wei Shen’s Hong Kong undercover cop drama–as Sleeping Dogs proved to be a sleeper hit.
GameSpy (Aug 14, 2012)
That lack of exploration or any multiplayer options means that even though there are plenty of minigames, races, clothes shopping, dating, and sidequests in which Wei helps people (usually by beating up some thugs or stealing a car), there's really nothing pulling me back in now that I've completed the roughly 20-hour story, other than seeking out collectables for achievements. If that floats your boat, there are plenty of them, but I'd rather be roaming the bigger, more interesting maps of other open-world games. Though I don't expect I'll be back, I can say that I've left satisfied that my gaming time has been well-spent.

There is not much here you haven’t seen somewhere before, but you’ve probably never seen it all in one place, nor done with quite this level of grinning, joyful self-assurance. This is a game that marries a desire for weighty narrative with an understanding of the value of simple, lunatic messing around. Its best moments, which are many, bring to mind a sort of breathless fusion of Infernal Affairs and Saints Row, with more kung-fu. It pushes at no boundaries, but is blissfully happy to hop up on top of them and do a happy dance instead. That’s something of a rarity these days, and more than enough reason to be thankful that Square-Enix didn’t just let sleeping dogs lie.

Cheat Happens (Aug 20, 2012)
Even with its faults, Sleeping Dogs needs to be checked out. The majority of its content works well, and you'll rarely run out of things to do. It may show the age of the open-world genre clearly, but it's a fun diversion none the less.
