Soldiers: HOWW2 is a strategic game, full of possibilities and blessed with a magnificent 3D-engine allowing a previously unseen degree of interactivity. Despite some minor flaws and loose ends in the details this game is great for everyone who loves slow but detailed gameplay with considerable depth and who is not afraid of a challenge. It also invigorates the RTS- and strategygenres who were in dire need of some innovations, which is a reason on itself to support the game. However, gamers who only want to produce units as fast as possible and rush the enemy should leave this game on the shelf. Everyone else: you won’t be disappointed.

Imagine a small scale battlefield filled with vehicles, soldiers, and buildings all affected by the game's physics engine, governed by historically accurate and realistic gameplay rules. Then the limits stop and the player can do whatever he desires with accordance to the map's objectives giving the game a genuine sandbox quality, only with a purpose.

While some RTS fans may not be happy that it does not follow the same Build & Overwhelm pattern of many other RTS titles, the depth and strategy it offers is a welcome change. If you are unsure and want to satisfy your curiosity, download the demo and give it a shot. Even though the market is getting cluttered with titles set during World War II titles, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is a pleasant surprise and time well spent.

This game caught me completely by surprise. When my package arrived from Omni, I looked at the discs and thought, “Great some more tripe from Codemasters.” I could not have been more wrong. Generally, I tend to shy away from any games having to do with either World War I or World War II. Sure, I enjoy my doses of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, but the strategy games for either of the Great Wars, have been difficult for me to get a handle on. The rich historical aspect of some wargames seems to be a bit much for me. Soldiers: Heroes of World War II tends not to dwell on the exact tank movements of a certain battle in hopes of achieving one hundred percent accuracy. Instead, it focuses its gameplay on real life events albeit with some artistic flair.

If you are a fan of the genre, you will like this game. The in-game camera may not zoom as much as you like and may be frustrating to control at times, but the overall experience is a good one. I plan to go back in and blow up a few more tanks just to see the top halves go flipping end over end in the air.

Games like Soldiers: Heroes of World War II are rare. Sure, there are plenty of RTS-type games and more than enough games set in the Second World War; what sets Soldiers apart is its unique synthesis of existing games. On the surface, the game looks surprisingly like (although slightly better than) the recent World War II themed RTS games. Add to that a healthy dose of Commandos's puzzle elements and fight-against-outrageous-odds setup and a jigger of action combat in the style Ikari Warrior or the Atari classic Combat and you've got a game that seems very familiar yet is unlike anything else already on the market.

Codemasters has been busy at building a stable of authentic military and racing simulation games over the past several years. If memory serves I believe it was Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis that was the first Codemasters game that I played. Since then I’ve enjoyed their Colin MacCrae WRC and TOCA (Pro Race Driver) racing games. If there is one thing Codemasters can claim, it is an uncompromising desire to produce games that accurately reflect the chosen vehicle and immerse the player into that world, bumps, bruises and all. 1C Company, the guys who brought you one of the best flight simulators of all time in Il-2 Sturmovik, now brings you Soldiers: Heroes of World War Two under the publishing banner of Codemasters. With Soldiers: Heroes of World War Two the player is put into a detailed and hair raising wargame unlike any other I’ve played.

Whilst Soldiers doesn’t break the mold to any revolutionary degree, it is a very playable game providing all the features you would come to expect of a WWII RTS whilst introducing some interesting and innovative features that some of us have been crying out for.

There are two kinds of difficulty in electronic games: “good difficulty” (which is challenging) and “bad difficulty’ (which leads you to snap the CD in half in frustration and curse the developers’ misbegotten offspring). Soldiers: Heroes of World War II has both, But when the good difficulty of Soldiers becomes bad, it’s not exactly the gameplay that’s at fault—it’s what’s missing from it. What is there, however, is outstanding.

Throw a stone through the window of a game store and you'll probably knock three World War II games onto the floor. But Soldiers shouldn't be dismissed -- not many games have walked the line between real-time strategy, stealth, and action this well, and fewer have done it with such variety and classy presentation. If you can stomach the theme, you'd do well to give it a shot.

It seems that nowadays you can’t take a step without running into a World War II simulation. With so many games flooding the genre, its getting harder and harder to separate each WWII RTS from the rest. Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is one such game. While the game does a lot of things right, like great graphics and some pretty cool interactive environments, it still doesn’t offer much in the way of innovation over other titles in the RTS genre. While Soldiers is a pretty good game, it’s still one that you’ve played before.

GameSpot (Jun 30, 2004)
The past few years have seen no shortage of games based on World War II. Sometimes it seems as if every other product by a European developer is a WWII-based strategy game. Despite adding to an already saturated genre, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II distinguishes itself with attractive graphics and challenging gameplay, which is an interesting hybrid of strategy and action. The game's level of challenge often borders on being punishing, but fans of tactical strategy games will find that the effort is worth it.

Overall, this is an excellent effort for this genre. Not a presice simulation attempt like Combat mission, its more like a Sgt Rock comic, your outnumbered band of fighters overcome tremendous odds, on the road to Berlin. The game is quite challenging, and can be somewhat addictive at times, always the sign of a good game. I recommend it.

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is a definite pick for anyone that wants to experiment with something very complex. This game is definitely not for people looking for a game they can just pick up and play. It’s complexity will turn many gamers far, far away, but to those with the dedication to play a solid game that will last them hours, this one is for you.

There are times when Soldiers: Heroes of World War II plays like an A-List game, sucking you into its world and causing the kind of sleep deprivation that only a really good game can. Unfortunately, those times are few and far between, which is a shame: Soldiers could have been a fantastic game, but in the end is brought down by technical issues, bugs, and a level of difficulty only a sadist would enjoy.

Betyget blir godkänt men knappast mer.

Having played countless RTS games (Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology, and Age of Empires) and countless shooters set in the WWII era (Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor), Soldiers: Heroes of WWII seems like a great idea. In the end though, the maddening difficulty level of this game destroys it. If you’re truly patient, then maybe, just maybe you might be able to get something out of it (Anthony's brother pledges that it's a good game once you get past the second mission), but if you’re like me who plays games to be entertained, I think you’re going to find yourself wanting to return this one.
