The Guardian (Jan 26, 2014)
None of the usual norms are respected, from how the game defines beginnings and endings to player freedom and progress. It's all held together by exceptional writing and voice acting, which turn this sharp, intelligent plaything into a truly hilarious experience.
Games Arena (Oct 28, 2013)
Destructoid (Oct 17, 2013)
How do you review a game like The Stanley Parable? To describe any one part of it is to risk its ruination. To detail what it has to say about game design, the illusion of choice, and the psychology of the gamer is to tell you too much. Comparisons, too, are going to be woefully inadequate. Perhaps its closest cousin would be Dear Esther, but where Dear Esther wastes the form of interactive entertainment, Stanley Parable uses and then subverts it. Where so many games that aspire to be more than games end up less than any form of art, Stanley Parable strives, and then succeeds, to be every game ever created. Even so, holding the game to the standards of any other title is simply not going to be correct.
Joystiq (Oct 18, 2013)
It's unfair to call The Stanley Parable short. It's kind of unfair to even call it a game, in some respects. The Stanley Parable is an experiment conducted on the player, an attempt to help you discover who you are. Are you the kid with a toy box, happy to simply interact with things and see how they work? Do you want to break stuff? Are you the kid who shuts the toy box and walks away? Do you want to be told what to do? Do you hate being told what to do? Do you just want Stanley to be happy? Do you want to rule the world? The conclusion of my own personal experiment was that I discovered I don't like doubt; I don't like having unanswered questions, especially when I have the faculties to clear away uncertainty and find resolution. Your own conclusion is bound to be very different from mine – and that's something we should all celebrate.
Thunderbolt Games (Oct 21, 2013)
Each journey through is always unique and filled with wonderful surprises, constantly subverting your expectations whether you discover one of its various endings in five minutes or thirty. Some may bemoan this short length but its brevity expertly plays into its design, allowing you to quickly get back on track as you venture down yet another of its branching paths. However you choose to engage in its tangled narratives and plethora of false choices, you’ll no doubt find something new and surprising to provoke a chuckle or prudent reflection on each playthough. It’s just a terrific experience, somehow managing to gratify with choices that seemingly mean nothing, achieving this feat with a phenomenal central performance, expert writing and ceaseless creativity. The only choice you have left to make now is an illusion, too. Of course you’re going to buy The Stanley Parable.
Digital Spy (Oct 31, 2013)
There is a lot more to The Stanley Parable, but to reveal the many wonderful surprises and twists crammed into the three hours it takes to see just about everything would be foolhardy. So instead, you'll have to trust us. But you'll be hard-pressed to find a funnier and more delightful game than The Stanley Parable this year.
GameTrailers (Oct 25, 2013)
A lot of videogames try to answer questions, such as how to improve storytelling, evolve a genre, or create a new genre. The Stanley Parable only raises questions through seemingly endless satire. With incisive wit, The Stanley Parable explores numerous game conventions by turning them on their head and having a good laugh at them. The probing never gets too heavy-handed and remains light-hearted enough that it’s enjoyable even if you don’t care about the subtext. Both subtle and extravagant, The Stanley Parable is a delightful experiment.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Nov 27, 2013)

Game Sphere (Nov 20, 2013)
Vous l’aurez compris, j’ai adoré The Stanley Parable.

Familiar but consistently surprising, this new Parable even fits beautifully into the existing game - a game that took its power not from a single narrative but the interaction of all its possible narratives, super-positioned and entangled. Here is another suite of variations, another arrangement of false choices to consider. I'm heading back in now, actually, looking for a door - I'm sure it'll be a door - that will hopefully lead me from the new build and into the original 2011 code. There, amongst the Source engine's grubby Half-Life 2 assets, is where my parable will end. That is where Stanley and I will find closure.
PC Gamer (Oct 25, 2013)
Effortlessly inventive, frequently surprising and consistently hilarious. The Stanley Parable shows how to make a story about game stories.
Polygon (Oct 17, 2013)
Like the best comedians, The Stanley Parable is both hilarious and insightful. It respects quick, cutting observations over a padded experience that would be deemed more valuable by some. For a small commitment in terms of time and money, it delivers a ton of laughs and just enough thought-provoking commentary on the nature of narrative in games. Getting everything you need out of a game in a few hours might just be the ideal format for comedy.
Edge (Nov 06, 2013)
Moreover, The Stanley Parable is brave. It’s brave because it offers the freedom to define the parameters of your experience. It’s brave because it’s willing to explore the ways in which games manipulate players, and to extrapolate that point into a discussion of the way we are all manipulated by the structures of real life. It’s brave because it’s willing to make fun of itself. Are you interested in game design? Play it. Did you enjoy Portal’s sense of humour? Play it. Are you David Cage? Please, please play it.
GameSpot (Oct 17, 2013)
The Stanley Parable is both a richly stimulating commentary on the nature of choice in games (and in other systems, too, like our workplaces and our families) and a game that offers some of the most enjoyable, surprising, and rewarding choices I've ever been confronted with in a game. Going the wrong way has never felt so right.
90 (Oct 21, 2013)
IGN UK (Oct 18, 2013)
Sometimes The Stanley Parable feels like an exploration of the peculiar madness of boredom. Other times it’s something else entirely: a joke at the player’s expense, a commentary on choice and consequence, a parody, a bureaucratic nightmare. All its different plotlines and personalities overlap and combine to create something that’s intriguingly opaque, but always entertaining, and genuinely funny. Whatever it is, it’s worth playing.
Geeks Under Grace (Sep 10, 2015)
The Stanley Parable is one of those special games that comes every so often. It brings a unique experience that keeps a player coming back for more and more. The game is very well put together, cleverly written and sure to bring a good time with a few laughs along the way.
Absolute Games ( (Dec 03, 2013)
Game Informer Magazine (Oct 22, 2013)
Galactic Cafe's creativity keeps the basic gameplay loop interesting. Each narrative twist and humorous soliloquy inspired me to test every branching path in hopes of uncovering new endings, of which there are many. Some are throwaway gags that made me chuckle (I never thought standing in a broom closet could be so amusing). Other times, the narrator's musings made me stop and think; the developer isn't afraid to break the fourth wall, questioning traditional game design, the value of player choice, and many other conventions we don't think twice about. The Stanley Parable is built upon a single, simple premise, and only offers a few hours of entertainment. That said, those few hours were unlike any I've experienced playing games before. If you're a fan of experimental indie projects or just in the mood for a fun detour from your typical gaming adventure, look no further.
Giant Bomb (Oct 20, 2013)
Prodding at The Stanley Parable and seeing how it will react to your various actions makes for a great, brief experience.
Riot Pixels (Dec 03, 2013)
The Stanley Parable is a game about Stanley. Except it isn’t really, and it’s not categorically a game in the true sense of the word. It’s more like a parody, except sometimes it’s intentionally not comical… wait; we’ve done this bit already, haven’t we? I feel we’ve done this bit already. Let’s make sure.
Gry Interia (Nov 06, 2013)
70 (Oct 19, 2013)
The Stanley Parable exists not as a technical or gameplay tour de force, but one about choice and the conceptual nature of story in games. It’s a short experience but one that is almost unheard of in today’s action-focused video game climate. If you like games that make you think or occasionally laugh, then The Stanley Parable is for you.
GameStar (Germany) (Feb, 2014)
