There are sure to be players who wont give Syndicate a chance based on the baggage it carries as a reboot to a cult hit. But Starbreeze has taken the fiction of the original and made a smart, slick, tactically engaging shooter, aided by a strong sense of presentation, great music, and good voice acting. It's not a radical evolution of the futuristic shooter, but Syndicate is an uncommonly well-assembled torch-bearer for the cyberpunk legacy that spawned it, and there are worse futures to look forward to.

If you love co-op it’s a must buy, if you like single player FPS it’s a must buy, if you like futuristic dystopias it’s a must buy… just buy it already. I’m tired. I was up all night on the co-op.
GameSpot (Feb 21, 2012)
Syndicate is a game of thrills and missed opportunities. And so it's important to know what you want from this shooter before you commit. Come to it for the thrills of joining a team and mowing down gunners like so many weeds in a Colorado research facility. Come to it for a chilly vision of the future, where the minds of meddlers can be altered with a simple computer program. There are numerous games better at providing single-player satisfaction, however, and this is where Syndicate falters. While it isn't entirely successful, the campaign still dares to be different. And while "different" isn't the same as "great," Syndicate reminds you that with a bit of creative effort, shooters don't have to play by Modern Warfare rules to be truly modern.

IGN (Feb 21, 2012)
Syndicate hints at a fantastic puzzle meta-game, but relies on bullets flying to get through every level. Where the story walks a familiar road, the cooperative campaign’s tough-but-fun arcade action makes up for the missteps. Though uneven, Syndicate remains a good shooter full of incomplete great ideas. Grabbing three friends and battling for corporate supremacy online is well worth your time, but don’t expect to be wowed by playing alone.

Cheat Happens (Mar 15, 2012)
There are moments where you'll swear that Syndicate is one of the greatest first shooters in recent years -- it's beautiful, fun and mechanically sound, but playing deeper into the game will reveal its darker side. In short -- Syndicate is a mess, a beautiful mess that somehow works. It may not be the shooter it could have been, but Syndicate is definitely worth a look.

Syndicate gets boring very quickly and I don’t see how it will last half as much as Left 4 Dead. It’s too short, too small in many ways and way too conventional in a market oversaturated with AAA alternatives. Alternatives which last longer and offer competitive modes, not just a few dozen hours of co-op runs in which you can’t point anything out to your teammates unless everyone has a microphone for the game’s VoIP.

GameSpy (Feb 20, 2012)
I can't help but think how great Syndicate could've been had it not settled for a safe, cliche narrative, or neglected basic online features on the PC. Nothing is broken, other than occasional crashes and a few minor graphical glitches I encountered (at one point my guns disappeared in an online match), but $60 is a lot to ask when its biggest feature (co-op) is so handicapped relative to the competition. As a fan of Starbreeze's past games, I can't help but feel let down by this forgettable misstep.
