Just Adventure (Aug 05, 2009)
I found the game as refreshing as a bucket of ice water on a sweltering evening. TOMI gives me hope that American game companies have finally seen the light that the European companies never lost sight of: specifically, that the graphic adventure game genre is alive and well, in spite of the raft of violence and lack of imagination in most of the shooter type games that abound in the American market. The animation and still art is better. The story is top notch. The music and voice work is as good as it always was (excellent).
1UP (Jul 07, 2009)
It's just one episode, so you can get through this first chapter in a single, three-hour sitting. With four monthly episodes on the way, though, it feels like just the right amount of piratey-goodness. But perhaps most importantly, Tales retains its timeless humor. The silly plot and horrible puns will be just as groan-inducing years from now as they are today. It may not have the immediate replay value of a multiplayer shooter, but like every Monkey Island game, after you've played through once, you'll want to revisit the game again sometime soon. Whether or not you've ever experienced Monkey Island's ridiculous puzzles and eccentric characters, this is a great opportunity to explore the reemerging world of adventure gaming.
Game Over Online (Jul 13, 2009)
Even at this early stage (1 of 5), Tales of Monkey Island earns a full recommendation for adventure fans that are pining for the days when games had a strong mental challenge and the payoff was completely hysterical lunacy. Find some pieces of eight and get yourself over to Telltale’s website or Steam and grab yourself a copy with the reckless abandon of a boatswain’s mate drunk on grog. The long wait is over, dear adventurers, and our renaissance is here!
GameBoomers (Jul, 2009)
A celebrated, self-deprecating, accident-prone pirate is resurrected by LucasArts and Telltale Games. Lots of familiar names are involved -- characters, voiceovers, writers, composers, graphic artists. Pretty much a dream team for relaunching Guybrush Threepwood and the Monkey Island series.
Girl Gamers UK (Jul 13, 2009)
The storyline was brilliant and typical of Monkey Island games. Complex puzzles for you to solve along with humorous and funny speech. Remarkably I think this game does itself justice. An intriguing storyline brings you a game that will keep you curious for some time as you discover the mysteries of Monkey Island. Graphically this game is pixel perfect, it is perfection at its finest. A well organized storyline, along with the usual funny antics from Guybrush to keep you amused for ages. It's the sort of game that will keep you occupied for some time as you try and solve all the different enigmas. So much detail has been developed for this game that I reckon if you try and rush through it you may miss a lot of things. This game will appeal to all types of gamers and will have people laughing out loud to all the funny and silly adventures of our young Guybrush and his terrible, but wacky one liners will keep us content and amused for some time to come.
Total PC Gaming (Jul 07, 2009)
If the full season of Tales can keep up to this same high standard then it will be the best Telltale serial to date and will also be able to take its place alongside the classic LucasArts entries with pride. We can’t predict whether that will happen, of course, but this debut episode has done enough to make sure that we’ll keep tuning in to find out.
Destructoid (Jul 07, 2009)
For a long-time Monkey Island fan, 'Launch of the Screaming Narwhal' will scratch the itch to return to the Carribbean and scratch it good. The flaws are negligible at worst and the humor really shines. It is a worthy successor to one of the finest adventure series ever to sail the seven seas. Here is to hoping Telltale can keep the Jolly Roger flying as high as it does here throughout the full length of the Tales season.
DarkZero (Jul 07, 2009)
If this first chapter is anything to go by, at $34.95 Tales of Monkey Island promises to deliver exceptional value for money. It’s available from July 7 on Telltale’s online store and a WiiWare release is planned for later this year. Sharpen your wit, ensure your parrot is firmly seated and climb aboard. I’m looking forward to the next chapter with a genuine sense of adventure.

Gamervision (Jul 08, 2009)
Being the first episode in the season, “Launch of the Screaming Narwhal" shows amazing potential for the Tales of Monkey Island series. Already it’s better than both the Wallace & Gromit and Strongbad series, and makes a move on some episodes of Sam & Max. Fans of Monkey Island should be happy to know that this is the sequel they’ve waited years for, and the series’ future is in great hands. Hopefully the rest of the episodes keep up the quality, and bring the genre and franchise back to center stage.

Worth Playing (Sep 02, 2009)
Overall, the first outing in the Tales of Monkey Island series feels a lot like riding a bike for the first time in over a decade. Sure, you may wobble a bit at first and you may not be able to pull off all the same tricks as you could in your younger days, but things ultimately fall into place and it isn't long before you relax into a nice rhythm. There are still a few aspects of the franchise that could use a tune-up, but a strong first outing leaves me excited to see where ol' Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate, will sail next.
Chief (Jul 25, 2009)

GamePro (US) (Jul 07, 2009)
So does the first episode live up to the Monkey Island franchise? Yes, Telltale hit it right out of the park with the first installment of the series. It has plenty of humor, fun gameplay, nice puzzles and wonderful music and voice work. The only real setback to the game is that the hint system can be too helpful. While you can change up the options for hints, sometimes it still felt too forgiving.
Video Game Generation (Aug 22, 2009)
Along with the LucasArts re-release The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Guybrush Threepwood and company would seem to once again have a bright future of pirating and plundering ahead of them. Tales of Monkey Island Chapter One: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is a good start to what should be a rollicking five chapter adventure on the high seas.
GameSpy (Jul 09, 2009)
Long story short: It's a new Monkey Island game. Play it if you dig the series, play it if you dig Telltale's other stuff, and play it if you dig adventure games in general. And if you're still saying this genre's dead here and now in 2009, you're just plain wrong. And you probably fight like a dairy farmer.
Factornews (Jul 07, 2009)
Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: The Launch of the Screaming Narwhal may not match perfectly to your past memories of the Monkey Island series, but it is a true Monkey Island game by every definition.
Adventure Advocate (Jul 20, 2009)
UOL Jogos (Jul 29, 2009)

Monkey Island fans should breathe a sigh of relief. While the game may not reach the hilarious heights of the series' high-points, it still provides a rollicking piratey adventure, with everyone's favourite idiot pirate who can hold his breath for ten minutes underwater. It provides a surprisingly large amount of content, a decent amount of in-jokes, and a lot of foreshadowing for future episodes. At the same time there are some hiccups along the way, and a useless mouse-control system. However, taking this episode as a whole and by measuring the amount of enjoyment we extracted from it, we walked away very happy indeed. If Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is anything to go by, and we hope it is, we're in for what could possibly be Telltale's best series yet, and a worthy continuation of the Monkey Island name.

Bit-Tech (Jul 07, 2009)
How the series develops from this point onward is obviously going to be critical and the season as a whole could fall flat at any point – which it almost does at the anti-climatic ending to this episode – but Screaming Narwhal is a stunning debut on the whole. Anyone with a sense of humour or a passion for adventure games would be doing themselves an injustice if they let Tales of Monkey Island pass them by without investigation, even if it won’t truly be a ‘Must Play’ until the entire season is available and we can judge the experience as a whole. Sceptics might want to wait and see how the reviews for the rest of the season play out and then pick up the entire set in one fell swoop, but our time with the game tells us that there's no harm in jumping in and trying the first episode right now. It's awesome.
Giant Bomb (Jul 07, 2009)
I was really satisfied with the three or four hours it took me to get through Launch of the Narwhal, and the episode ends on a delicious cliffhanger that has me eager to see what happens in next month's episode.
IGN (Jul 07, 2009)
The episode's biggest weakness is the clear lack of any kind of grand finale. While the music swells once you leave the island, the finale lacks epic triumph and the denouement amounts to a cliffhanger, leaving more questions than answers. And there are plenty of questions to be answered as the designers have planted plenty of seeds for future installments. So episode 1 gets high notes for bringing us back into the Monkey Island universe, but at the same time, it looks like we'll have to wait for the rest of the episodes to roll out over the next four months or so to get all the answers.
PC Games (Germany) (Jul 18, 2009)
Game Freaks 365 (Dec 30, 2009)
I have always been a fan of TellTale Games. Their satirical approach to gaming is a refreshing reprieve from the violence that dominates today's landscape. Tales from Monkey Island is no different. This is a funny game with clever characters and a story line that will have you laugh out loud. Some of the puzzles are not all that obvious – I resorted to GameFaqs a couple times – but most of them are obvious enough after careful thinking. I definitely recommend Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal to adventure fans and Monkey Island fans alike.
FOK!games (Jul 13, 2009)
Good Game (Jul 13, 2009)
It can get frustrating when you can’t work out what you need to interact with... Other than that though we wont spoil the puzzles for you, but the characters are fun, the setting is nostalgic and the script, voice acting and editing is top knotch. I’m giving it 7.5/10.
GameStar (Germany) (Jul 08, 2009)
Launch of the Screaming Narwhal ist ein gutes Adventure. Launch of the Screaming Narwhal erfüllt seinen Zweck.
Good Game (Jul 13, 2009)
Wallace and Gromit had a more self contained first episode, with an awesome boss fight at the end – this just kinda ended with a cliffhanger and without a climax so there’s no closure to it, I think it’s more of a setup episode than anything else which is why I felt a bit let down Jung, so I am looking forward to the next chapter but this one is 7/10 from me.
70 (Aug 14, 2009)
In short, tis first piece of adventure with Guybrush is promising but can't manage to fulfill the expectations. Especially the varying quality of the puzzles and dialogues, which now and then show a glimpse of the original ingeniousness but then fall back again, make that the score remains limited. Be sure to try this one out if you like the series - you won't regret it - and hope together with the rest of us that things will only get better in the coming episodes.
GameZebo (Jul 31, 2009)
This funny and gratifying adventure is great for fans of the genre or series, as well as newcomers.
Thunderbolt Games (Jul 09, 2009)
It was hard to envy Telltale Games when they first announced that they were to create a whole new chapter in the Monkey Island series. Trying to appease a fanbase raised on ludicrous puzzle solving and the idea that any bad blood could be resolved with a gentlemanly bout of insult sword fighting might have been seen as a thankless task; Escape From Monkey Island was proof enough that hell hath no fury like a diehard fan scorned. But Telltale Games has risen estimably to the challenge, even if Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is more of a quiet entrance via the back door than a full-blown, welcome back parade through the streets. One thing’s for sure – it’s great to have an old friend back in the spotlight where it belongs.
70 (UK) (Jul 09, 2009)
Although it's not quite everything it could have been, Tales of Monkey Island marks a highly entertaining return to a much-loved series. Despite a rather forgettable supporting cast, Telltale makes up for it with consistently excellent puzzle design, and occasional flourishes of comedy genius. Adventure game fans might pull a face about one or two things that Telltale dropped the ball on, but overall no one can deny that it's great to have the series back.
Adventure Gamers (Jul 07, 2009)
Can you really complain about the return of Guybrush? Well, yes, but this is still a fun and beautiful pirate adventure that should make any fan excited for what Telltale has in store for the rest of this series.
The game is far too short, the puzzles are repetitive and uninspired, and the character movement scheme can sometimes make some of the puzzles more frustrating than fun. But, as in the other episodic series in the Telltale repertoire, the real star of the show is the writing, which is consistently entertaining even if the rest of the game is not. Here’s hoping that, as the series progresses, the rest of the elements will come together, shaking the cobwebs off of an almost 20-year-old franchise.
60 (Jul 07, 2009)
Still, Telltale's created a perfectly enjoyable game that all Monkey Island fans should at least try. It's not as engaging or memorable as we remember the originals to be, and the puzzles won't blow anyone away, but it's still hugely exciting to play a brand new Monkey Island game, such is the enduring popularity of the early 90s classics. And, if there was any doubt, the game proves that the Monkey Island universe is one that's as compelling now as it was nearly 20 years ago, and well-suited to the Telltale treatment.
