Description

To Kindle a Light is a single-player piece of interactive fiction developed with the Quest text adventure game tool. When Quest is installed this is one of the games that is available for free download from its menu system, others are available on the Quest website. The title comes from a quote from Karl Jung - “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.", a book by Jung is in a bookcase in the game

In this mystery story the player takes the role of Melanie who is returning to the family home in the middle of nowhere. The cottage used to belong to her grandfather but, after his death it passed to her uncle Mark and now he too has died it falls to her to deal with his estate. Needless to say this is not a mundane task added top which her uncle seems to have been suffering some form of psychosis..

The game plays like an old-style text adventure with around twenty locations. It is keyboard controlled using N/S/E/W to move North/South/East/West, I to bring up a list of items in the inventory, X to examine and so forth. The up and down arrows allow the player to scroll through previously issued instructions.

The game plays in a vertically scrollable, resizeable window which holds a considerable chunk of the game's progress. At the bottom of the screen is the text box into which the player types their commands, all commands must be entered into this box so scrolling back through the progress history for a clue and typing when the box ix not visible does not work.

It has a save game feature, type SAVE, with just one save slot, with the first save the player is asked to name their save file and all subsequent game saves write to the same file. There is no in-game hint system nor is a walkthrough provided.
