In the end, UFO: Extraterrestrials has largely managed to capture the elements that made X-COM such a classic and iconic game. Almost nothing about the game can labeled as innovative or revolutionary, but it is such a well packaged refinement of a proven formula that it is hard to complain. There are some rather questionable design choices that cut into the fun but otherwise it's a wonderful homage to a classic title. X-COM veterans and gaming newbies alike should definitely take a look into this one-old school PC gamer or not, there's a damn fine gaming experience waiting for you.

UFO isn’t perfect, but it does breathe enough life into a genre that hasn’t seen enough action recently. You could do a lot worse.

Overall the game is well done and will be very much enjoyed by fans of the classic X:COM games and anyone who enjoys tactical combats. The game retains the high replayablility factor of the classic games combined with updated graphics and smooth game play. Chaos Concepts would have been well served to have their final text reviewed by a native English speaker for both the UFOPedia entries and the opening credits movie. While there are no Zero Wing level mistranslations there are enough odd phrasings and miss-used words to show that the development was not in English. Some will be frustrated by watching funding disappear in the geoscape and by the inability to hire new solders as needed as well as the omission of a tactical map. Overlooking these flaws will reward the player with a fun tactical combat game wrapped with strategy elements.

This is really like playing X-COM for the first time again, except 15 years on. It's fun, tough, cheap and really hard to stop playing; sometimes it's good to look back.

For X-Com fans there is a lot to like about UFO: Extraterrestrials although I doubt many will be entirely happy with the game. Personally I think it's a good game that could have been better. The aforementioned problems are all issues that could have been put right and had they been we'd now be looking at a game that was highly recommended. As it stands it's simply a good game that will please those who have the patience to endure the game's shortcomings and disappoint those who were expecting more.
Out Of Eight (May 17, 2007)
The game is fun to play: fans of the strategic and tactical mix that was perfected in X-COM will find that UFO: Extraterrestrials almost lives up to the lofty expectations of an unofficial follow-up. It may not be as groundbreaking as the original, but UFO: Extraterrestrials still offers some solid gameplay that’s a few tweaks short of a completely recommendable title.
Game Over Online (Aug 14, 2007)
UFO: Extraterrestrials is just a poorly made game. Almost nothing about it works, and there’s absolutely no reason why you should buy it when you could play UFO: Afterlight (or even Silent Storm) instead. So stay far away from this game, even if you see it being dangled enticingly from a bargain bin somewhere.
Maximum PC (Oct 30, 2007)
That said, X-COM fans are sure to enjoy UFO. With some mods applied (we recommend the FrankenMod, which so easily improves UFO that the game’s developers should be embarrassed), this is the best X-COM clone to come along in a decade. And as sad as that is, it’s nice that someone’s still trying to recapture the magic.

UFO: Extraterrestrials is a bad title. In fact, at the heart of it is a game which is still a classic all these years on. The problem is that it is essentially trying to be that game, rather than taking as an inspiration and doing something new. Laser Squad Nemesis, from the original creators, did more and that was over 3 years ago. Extraterrestrials is just another X-COM clone and lacking in new ideas.
PC Powerplay (Jun 27, 2007)

There are enough flaws in it to stop recommending it to anyone but real X-com fans - who, it seems, are busy trying to mod it into something closer to their desires. If you're not one yet, but are intrigued by the vague prospect, it's worth noting that the X-Com sequel is up on Steam at a very reasonable price as long as you don't have Vista (no, it's not compatible). Everyone else should probably sit back and wait to see what 2K Games is actually going to do with the X-Com license...

GameSpot (May 11, 2007)
OK, all of that sounds pretty grim. But despite the many flaws in UFO: Extraterrestrials, there remains something mildly compelling because of the aggressive AI, the expansive tech tree, and the X-COM look and feel. This isn't a good game no matter how you look at it, but there are rare moments where you almost feel hypnotized into believing you're playing something that actually resembles a proper X-COM remake. Of course, then the game turns around and does any number of remarkably stupid things, thus snapping you out of this reverie very quickly. At least you'll wring some small amount of nostalgia out of UFO before the harsh reality of its many, many problems sets in.
