Or, it’s tight. It’s compact. It tells its story and dazzles you with deftly-designed puzzles of varying styles and hues, and doesn’t pad itself out with a load of crap that doesn’t need to be there. Hover-o will glide into your life, perplex and delight for about three hours, and then hover off, up and away into the skies. Remember him well. I shall.

Unmechanical provides players with addictive and mind-perplexing puzzles, in addition to both a charming and atmospheric presentation. Stunning visuals and a captivating soundtrack combine for one of the best looking and sounding independent games in recent history. Unfortunately, the gameplay experience of Unmechanical suffers from the lack of a proper narrative and details on the game's setting and characters.

To compliment the graphics, the musical score suits Unmechanical perfectly with its background ambience. Sound effects are what you would expect from a tiny robot and both the graphics, gameplay and sound comes together well which creates this fun gaming experience. The only downside of Unmechanical is that it's quite a linear experience and it's a little too short. However for the price, it's definitely worth investigating if you're looking for a a fun yet sometimes frustrating puzzler. Recommended!

Despite its abrupt stopping point, Unmechanical is a really satisfying experience while it lasts. Every single puzzle had that lovely feeling of “Oh, I get it!”, and no two used the same type of solution. One section will require a series of switches to be activated by bombs in a specific order, while another has you figuring out the pattern on a giant wheel of colors to unlock a door. One area has you exploring the lovely underwater terrain to find a rock to weight down a switch, while another has you figuring out an icon-based numbering system and using it to place blocks in the correct order on a series of switches. The only real problem with the length is the pacing, with no indication given that you’re on the last area and solving the final puzzle until, surprise!, end credits. It’s analagous to reading a review that, while technically it’s said everything it needs to, simply comes to a stop.

Graphics aside, it’s a short and sweet adventure that’s a fun way to spend a few hours, but nothing to write home about. The puzzles are interesting while they last but are done and forgotten very quickly. There’s no bigger picture or point to solving the puzzles other than to get to the next one, and that isn’t quite enough for me to say it’s a great game.

Otherwise, there's not much to tell: Unmechanical is a fun and clever game that treads familiar ground. And yet it's thoughtful enough to inspire your intellect and draw you into its world. You may not miss it once you leave it behind, but Unmechanical is a pleasant puzzler that keeps you busy for the few hours that it lasts

Darkstation (Aug 30, 2012)
Unmechanical is a puzzle games that offers a pretty, but all too familiar experience of solving difficult puzzles in order to advance through a subterranean underworld. Easy and minimalistic controls make the game easy enough to pick up for gamers of any skill level, but some of the more complex puzzles may put them off or force them to seek out solutions. If it’s a challenge you seek, Unmechanical will give it to you.

That also keeps Unmechanical from making much of an impression. The game is easily short enough to finish in an afternoon even if you're doing other things at the same time. Its finale feels even more abrupt than it is, because there's no crescendo of difficulty or complexity, no "boss" puzzle. With little warning, Unmechanical simply ends, and without a strong story or memorable puzzles to hang its hat on, it fails to leave a mark, despite its lovely visuals.
