As you may have guessed by now, while UT2003’s biggest selling point was its graphics, here it’s the polish. The controls are tightened, the interface feels right, all the new elements are balanced, and the single-player season is vastly improved over UT2003’s. This time around it better reflects the impact of team upkeep, trading, and advancing through a league. But the single-player campaign also introduces the only significant beef that we could come up with about UT2004: your teammates’ A.I. and your ability to command them on the fly. Besides that and the slightly tired techno soundtrack, we can’t think of a single reason you shouldn’t already own Unreal Tournament 2004—unless you have a sluggish computer, that is.

It's been just over a year since Unreal Tournament 2003 burst onto the scene and hooked PC players with its intense deathmatch action, but soon after its release, fans craved more levels, more game modes - more everything! Well, more has finally arrived, and boy, does UT 2004 deliver the goods. Flak's Back UT 2004 addresses all the flaws that plagued last year's edition, starting with the revamped single-player tournament. While a broadband internet connection is preferred, the superior combat A.I. ensures you'll have fun offline, too. All told, there are nearly 100 levels spaced across 10 play modes; you'll still find old favorites like Double Domination and Capture the Flag along with novel newcomers like Invasion (in which you zap armies of aliens). But there's more.
Game Shark (Jul 27, 2004)
It’s not a perfect game, but it’s easily a decent contender for one of the best releases so far as of this year. Forget comparisons or thoughts of it being an expansion to UT2k3, as this is something far, far more than that. With the famed versatility of the game engine, the amazing potential for quality third-party content has already begun to manifest itself, making it well worth the purchase and hefty investment in hard drive space. Replayability, great gameplay, and some excellent multiplayer teamplay action to boot makes Unreal Tournament 2004 rank very highly in my eyes. Pick it up as soon as possible, lest you be mocked as the last person in your area to get in on what all the cool kids are doing these days.
GameDaily (Mar 31, 2004)
There are very few bad things that can be said about UT2004. Perhaps the only problems I had where the long load times and the small selection of Assault maps. However, the five Assault maps are quite expansive and should hold most players over until more community maps can be put together. As for the load times, they're a small price to pay for this level of gameplay. This is PC gaming at its absolute best. With a starting MSRP of $39.99, this game is an absolute steal! This should be nominated as one of the best games of the year, and it deserves all the accolades it can get. So, load up your flak cannon and get a move on! The online bloodbath awaits!
GameSpy (Mar 11, 2004)
Sure, there's tons of traditional deathmatch, CTF, and other modes to keep you busy, and it's all done extremely well. In fact, we can't emphasize enough how polished UT 2004 is -- most games have a few weak spots, whether it's a few technical glitches or weak AI, but it's hard to find any such chinks in UT 2004's armor. Add two outstanding modes like Onslaught and Assault to the mix, and now you've got two or three great games in one box -- and that's saying something.
Game Chronicles (Apr 21, 2004)
But for now, UT2004 is one of the best, if not the best, tactical FPS games you can play on your PC, either alone or online. With improved gameplay, enhanced AI, and new game modes it’s packed with enough content to keep you entertained for months, and it will take a good solid year to master all the levels and tactical subtleties this game offers. By then, there will be plenty of mods, new maps, and perhaps even a new official installment in the series. This is a must-own game for every FPS gamer and a good incentive to upgrade your computer if you need to. Just make sure you play Unreal Tournament 2004.
Game Over Online (Apr 01, 2004)
After kind of letting the series slide in 2003, it’s evident that there has been a great deal of work and thought put into UT2004. I’m impressed by a lot of things in this game. The physics of the vehicles, the balance of the weapons, and the sheer magnitude of choices available are all great. Most impressive of all is the obvious care and planning put into the maps, which are large without being cavernous, and intricate without being overly confusing (though I’ve got to say that it’s a good thing that they’ve included vehicles, because some maps would involve a lot of long walks if you couldn’t steal a vehicle somewhere). UT2004 is well balanced, beautifully rendered, and cleverly arranged. I’m sure that after the review, people will still be seeing a lot of me on UT2004 servers. I often play under the name ‘Backstabber,’ and you probably couldn’t spend your gaming dollar more entertainingly than to join me there.
GameZone (Apr 08, 2004)
Well, if the score doesn’t sum it all up for all of you readers out there, then please go get a copy and try it out for yourself. Even people who aren’t really big into FPS games seem to enjoy UT, and now even BF junkies can head on back to the dark side of FPS arena gaming and get a fix from playing in a little bit of a different way. Overall, Atari really did a great job with UT2K4 in all aspects, period. This game sums up what you buy an FPS for and once again raises the bar on what we gamers should expect when we go to buy a game.
games xtreme (Apr 05, 2004)
Its simple, the game works. The game definitley posses the X factor, though players with internet connections will get the most from the game, as playing against bots is only half as fun as playing against real opponents. I have one criticism of the game, and that is the loading times, as a single load can drag on for what seems like an ice-age .The loading screen doesn't have a progression bar, which sometimes leaves you looking at your screen wondering whether your game has crashed. The game provides a decent challenge for someone who just wants a bit of pick up and play gaming every now and then, but also provides a deeper challenge for those who wan't to get further involved in the game, as you quite often will see clan matches being fought out. Solid physics, top notch graphics, and some brilliant ides will provide Atari with a guaranteed hit.
Last year’s Unreal Tournament 2003 was criticized by fans for many reasons. Rest assured, fragmeisters – UT 2004 is all you could ask for and more. Beyond the stunning presentation, the fast-paced core of UT’s gameplay is better than ever before. And besides, what other FPS can offer you the instant gratification of the announcer shouting "Head shot!" when you snipe some unsuspecting fool?
IGN (Mar 11, 2004)
Given that Epic had already reached a sweet, sweet point with the original Unreal Tournament, and some would argue with UT2003, it was fair to wonder what more they could do with the next iteration of the series. Well, it's easy to say they've delivered, and then some. A huge selection of new maps, gorgeous graphics, improved game play, and the return of Assault are generous enough. But the addition of Onslaught, with its powerful vehicles and tactical variety, makes UT2004 into a multiplayer behemoth, offering enough action, depth, and expansion possibilities (just think of the mods here, people), to justify keeping UT2004 on your hard drive for a long, long time. Has Epic provided an alternative to a glut of military-themed shooters? Hell yes they have. That, and then some.
PC Zone (Jan 13, 2004)
To return to the FIFA analogy, the difference between UT2003 and 2004 is vast, as if the former was just a kickabout in the park. My only worry is how Epic plan on topping it, because aside from bolting on new weapons, maps and vehicles, there isn't much else to be added apart from say a massively-multiplayer persistent-world mode. We'll see. In the meantime, there's more than enough to enjoy this season before we contemplate the next. Game on.
Worth Playing (Apr 16, 2004)
Epic and Digital Extremes really put a lot of time and effort into UT 2004, and it shows. This is not a simple UT 2003 clone with a few extra maps and players; they have really advanced the series with the inclusion of vehicles and taken it to the next level. Onslaught alone makes this game a must-buy for all the fans out there. If you are an online gamer and looking for the very best death match game out there today, there is no better, more polished game out there than Unreal Tournament 2004. This is the game UT 2003 should have been! If you haven't already, go out and snag yourself a copy of this masterpiece!
GameSpot (Mar 16, 2004)
There isn't some clear-cut formula for making a great game, but Epic hasn't ignored bullet-point features in expanding the Unreal Tournament series, which is now in its third installment. The multiplayer-focused first-person shooter series started off in 1999 with great graphics, crisp control, solid networking (which led to smooth online gameplay), and hectic action. These basics haven't been neglected, even as expectations have changed--and have significantly increased--over the last five years. However, UT has never been just about settling for the basics, and to this end, the new Unreal Tournament 2004 has a tremendous variety of maps and modes of play.
ActionTrip (Mar 18, 2004)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (Onslaught mode really) may occasionally appear as kind of a futuristic version of Battlefield 1942. On paper the concept seems similar, and on paper that holds true. However, anyone who even thinks about drawing any direct parallels between the gameplay styles of Battlefield and UT 2004 knows very little about multiplayer gaming. Onslaught mode in UT 2004 has a mind of its own, and we like how that mind operates! Not to mention that UT 2004 goes well beyond Onslaught, as we have pointed out already in the review. The huge assortment of high-tech weaponry and the variety of modes, coupled with the superiority of the Unreal technology, rightfully places UT 2004 amongst high-ranking online action games. We sincerely recommend this game to anyone who's out for some serious MP fun.
Gamigo (Mar 19, 2004)
Game Revolution (Jun 05, 2004)
Marrying the best elements of traditional UT with Halo, Tribes II and a bit of the Battlefield series, the game serves up intricate, breakneck battles at blinding speeds. The introduction of vehicles and new gameplay modes expands the series in fresh directions, leading to a game that actually lives up to its grandiose name.
GameStar (Germany) (Apr, 2004)

Epic has created the mother of all first-person shooters with this game - over a hundred maps, a selection of diverse and extremely well balanced game modes, built in voice communications, intelligent bots, a great offline play mode, good network code, a superb server browser and a solid graphics engine. Onslaught alone is worth the price of entry, but the game as a whole is a stunning package, and if proof were required, then the many, many hours we've clocked up at the game over the past couple of weeks should serve as proof enough. Best of all, continued support for the game with new content and patches is almost guaranteed given Epic's track record - and there are promises of goodies to come such as CTF maps with the vehicles enabled which sound absolutely great. Any fan of fast online FPS action needs a copy of this game installed, because this is the benchmark for twitch FPS games from now on out, without a shadow of a doubt.
GamerDad (Jun 13, 2004)
The action is violent and warlike, but decidedly sci-fi and more outrageous than realistic. There's a lot of blood, a lot of mayhem, and a lot of violence, but what keeps people coming back is the emphasis on twitch/action skills, not the gore factor. It's a well designed game and the developers showed restraint, but itメs called Deathmatch and has a Mature rating for good reason.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Aug 18, 2004)
Game Watcher (May 11, 2004)
Well, just reading this you can see that they have delivered a sweet game and more. Just half of this game's content is alone worthy of a buy, but the whole package makes UT2004 into a gaming-god-behemoth, offering enough action, depth, and expansion possibilities (just think of the mods that are going to come!!), to justify keeping UT2004 's shortcut on your desktop. If you're having second thoughts about buying it yet after reading this, then you're insane. Pardon me. This game is beyond good.

GameStar (Germany) (Jan, 2004)
Unreal Tournament 2004 enthält praktisch alles, was ich in Sachen Multiplayer erwarte.

82 (Apr 05, 2004)
I’m sure lovers of Unreal Tournament will enjoy UT2004 as it’s got everything all previous versions had combined with some of the best elements of several other games but if you’re looking for something original that has a bit more to it you’d better start looking elsewhere and then I’m thinking in the direction of Call of Duty, Battlefield, or – if you can wait – Half-Life 2 or Doom 3.
81 (Mar 23, 2004)
