That UT includes a weapon called the Redeemer in entirely appropriate; UT has completely redeemed both Epic and the UNREAL franchise to action gamers. With the combination of great Al, depth and variety of gameplay, and accessibility to both newbies and the hardcore, UT has shot the pulse-pounding mayhem of multiplayer shooters to new heights.
Unreal Tournament is everything expected: fast, well-balanced and pretty, with ingenious bot AI, nasty weapons and funky levels. For a game with zero plot or character development, it's wildly entertaining, but it's definitely not a deep, engrossing game. Good for quick fixes of intense carnage, UT is a perfect stepping-stone for those beginning to play games online for the first time or to take their skills to the next level. UT is more complex than an arcade game, but with the selectable bot AI, even strangers to the world of FPS can learn how to play.
Game.EXE (Jan, 2000)
HonestGamers (Dec 10, 2003)
The indelible, pulse-quickening effect Unreal Tournament will have on you will vary in magnitude mainly by how many friends you have that are willing to join you in this war, and just how much you are into FPS games. But as previously mentioned, appreciation for the game isn't wholly dependent on these factors. I cannot say for sure whether my group of game players is a microcosm of the gaming community at large, but it sure seems likely. Yet their only complaint after fragging week in and week out, was that they wished there were more maps, and more character skins. And they are avaiable - easily downloadable from various internet sites. Before long, our tournament was revitalized, and once more battle cries like ''Boom!'' figured largely in our daily conversations. Appropriately, the notion of shaking this game off once you've played it recalls another, poignant taunt from Unreal Tournament: ''Useless!''
But that’s the only thing we were upset about during our hours of pretty much nonstop gameplay; Unreal Tournament is a great game, and as remarkable a turnaround from the original’s abysmal multiplayer as the ’99 Rams are from the ’98 version. If you’re at all a fan of multiplayer games or first person shooters, buy this game.
100 (Jun 12, 2001)
This much-hyped shooter game lives up to its promise, but it's definitely not for the under-12 crowd. The game has a whopping 50 battle levels and four different game types: DeathMatch, Assault, Domination, and Capture the Flag. It's backed by a Web site that hosts a bevy of online tournaments and offers patches, tips, and chat with other gamers.
Although this game remains largely true to the first-person shooter legacy, it does its job so very well, and the addition of domination and assault game types adds a tremendous amount of interest. The best feature of Unreal Tournament is what makes the game so appealing for solo players—outstanding artificial intelligence. Upon this solid foundation rests one of the best collections of maps, weapons, sound, and visuals ever created. Count on modifications coming out in the months ahead, and count on this game being among your favorites for at least as long.
100 (UK) (Dec 04, 1999)
Both single player and multiplayer are excellent, as are the majority of the maps. The graphics are a match for anything else on the market, and the game doesn't need a supercomputer to run it.
incite PC Gaming (Dec, 1999)
The Unreal Tournament playing experience is infused with a kinetic combination of highly intelligent bots, utterly amazing visuals, brilliant, although sometimes highly claustrophobic, arena designs, outlandish weapons, diverse game modes, and a breakneck pace that is simply unsurpassed, even compared to the current Quake III: Arena Test version.
Flawless. Configurable keyboard controls, information-loaded HUD, tight play modes, great maps, awesome graphics. This game lacks nothing. It runs a tad jumpy at times, even on my high-end system, and for that I dock it one percentage point. Whoopde-doo. Go get this game, NOW, if you've ever liked a first person shooter. It is the best out there. Period.
Game Over Online (Dec 03, 1999)
So how does Unreal Tournament size up? Well the only word that comes to mind is BRILLIANCE. I have no idea how Quake 3 Arena is even going to begin to compare to this title. Unreal Tournament is an out-the-box-success. No week-later problem fixer patch is needed here. Everything in the game is utter perfection. Whether you're in it for the single player quest or the online extravaganza Unreal Tournament doesn't have what you need -- IT IS what you need. And after all this -- if you're still not satisfied - at least you got yourself about a forty-dollar IRC client.
There's a saying that goes, "You snooze, you lose." After playing Unreal Tournament you'll quickly realize that id snoozed, and they lost the multiplayer FPS shoot out. This is the game that you want stuffed in your stocking this Christmas.
games xtreme (Dec 14, 1999)
It's Arrived, finally I get to play my most awaited game, Unreal Tournament, Along with Quake 3: Arena it has caused a stir around all of the Gaming Community. Online gaming like never before?, computer controlled bots that kick ass?, great gameplay and graphics with 3D sounds and amazing effects? Well this is the review to find out.
Gamezilla (Jan 14, 2000)
For a game designed with multiplayer play as its chief goal, Unreal Tournament offers great single player gaming as well. With Epic's amazing 3D engine added to all-new gameplay, GT Interactive has released a game that can compete with the Quake series across the board -- the included levels and game modes are fantastic and the extensibility of the game engine promises great add-ons from fans ranging from new maps to complete game overhauls. Grab a copy and take it out for a spin -- you won't be disappointed.
IGN (Dec 06, 1999)
Unreal Tournament is getting the highest score that IGNPC has ever given a game. Simply put, Epic has earned it by delivering a title that is as close to flawless as I've ever seen, both in its ability to entertain and in its finely honed technology and presentation. While there's no doubt that Quake III is a powerfully addictive game with some advantages over Unreal, I feel like, in the long run, Unreal Tournament will be the better of the two games.

GameBlitz (1999)
Though I have already stated that I prefer the fast-paced gameplay and style of Q3, if it's diversity you’re after then check this title out first. I won’t limit myself to just one death match game, however, as there are plenty of cool ones out there and the Q3 vs UT argument should change to ‘Q3 and UT – the King and Queen of DM’. UT is a cracker of a game and should be played regardless of preference. If this is a sign of things to come, I want more!
Unreal Tournament is one of those games that raises the bar considerably for its genre. With all of the play modes, excellent multi-player setup, great graphics, and absolutely amazing level design, this game stands high as a shining example of what a first person shooter should be.
Unreal Tournament is a downright excellent shooter, but the saving grace of this game might lie in its out of the box teamplay mods. Quake 3 Arena shipped with deathmatch and CTF and we are still waiting for the heavier teamplay mods to be released. Just beware of the overly flashy levels, for they aren't as cool as you might originally think.
95 (Jan 24, 2006)
GameSpot (Dec 09, 1999)
When Unreal was released back in May of 1998, it turned a lot of heads. But while the game delivered the most immersive and interesting single-player shooter for its time, the multiplayer game was very weak in comparison. The weapons never really seemed to pack a punch. The deathmatch maps were hit and miss. The performance of Internet games took months of patching before it was acceptable, but by the time that happened, most people had already moved on to bigger and better games. In contrast, Unreal Tournament goes in a new direction for the first-person shooter genre by stripping away anything that resembles a single-player adventure mode, and instead, it strictly focuses on the more popular multiplayer aspects of the genre.
GameSpy (Nov 11, 1999)
A fast, fun deathmatch or teamplay game suitable for both single and multiplayer gaming. Brilliant bots are the highlight of a strong first-person game.
I have had a total blast with this game, and it is sure to stay on my hard drive for a while. I haven’t had this much fun with a game since Tribes. UT successfully manages to take some of the best features of every first person shooter out there and put them into one game. I can’t wait to see what people will do with this game, the potential is amazing. By the way, try mixing the Insta-Gib and Low Gravity mutators - it’s a blast. And so is this game. Terrific job, Epic.
Power Unlimited (Jun, 1999)
Gaming Age (1999)
Unreal Tournament is a lot better than I had expected it to turn out. This is a huge improvement over what many Unreal fans found in the first title. Don't let the Quake 3 Arena zealots fool you, Unreal Tournament is a title that easily measures up to some of the best FPS titles out there.
Game Revolution (Dec 01, 1999)
Unreal Tournament, by the thinnest of margins, is not really a revolutionary game, but it is almost perfect at what it does. This is the definitive straight multi-player first person shooter. It is an amazing game that never fails to impress or entertain. No self-respecting action gamer's library is complete without Unreal Tournament. This is the undisputed champion, choose it . . . there's no reason to pick the consolation prize.
Power Play (Aug, 1999)
This game is beautiful. I had high expectations considering the graphics of the last Unreal. There are many different playing modes. Like capture the flag, co-op missions etc. The maps are gorgeous. There are even ways to alter your game using Mods. The only thing I am disappointed by is the language. There is a feature called auto-taunt, when this is enabled your character shouts these taunts when they kill somebody. Some are cute like 'I'm sorry but did I just blow your head off?', or 'Medic!', but there are some that are not appropriate like 'Die B**ch!' Fortunately this can be disabled. The game is easy to install. There are some patches for it. It can be used in Linux, you can use your Windows CD. The graphics are great, good D3d and 3DFX. The music is awesome. (Have to like techno) Game play and styles are fun. This is a really great game. But the language is not suited for kids or those easily offended.
GamePro (US) (Nov 24, 2000)
In short, whether you're new to the genre or a shooter vet looking for new thrills, UT has everything you need.
PC Zone (Aug 13, 2001)
Shame. UT is a milestone. It proves that a bot-packed multiplayer-only game works. It also proves that ideas and fun are as valuable as pushing the technology envelope or catering to the po-faced multiplayer community. Importantly, it also mainstreams the use of bots and hints that in-game AI has come of age. It also proves that you haven't lived until you've pulled off ten headshots in a row and been declared 'Godlike'. Play it - you'll understand.
For your buck, Unreal Tournament performs better than a shoe-polishing monkey who can sing like Frank Sinatra in German. If you call yourself a fan of the first person shooter genre or multi-player gaming and don't have this title, you should reconsider who you are as a gamer (or pick it up!). Personally, Unreal Tournament ranks highly on my "favorite games of all time" chart.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Aug 31, 1999)
The different brands of competition offered here--deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination and Assault--might not be pioneering efforts in and of themselves, but the comprehensive and professional nature of the presentation is. Epic has created a title that can offer users fresh and exciting new experiences as well as improve their abilities. The broad range of difficulty settings coupled with artificial intelligence that can present either a serious challenge or a slow moving target should enable any person to get into the game, have fun, and fine-tune their expertise. All of this is bundled with an intuitive Windows-style GUI, a painless point-and-tap process for connecting to online matches, and some of the nicest graphical wrapping gamers are going to see this Christmas.
GameStar (Germany) (Aug, 1999)
Gry OnLine (Jul 02, 2001)
FiringSquad (Dec 09, 1999)
Make no mistake: We think Unreal Tournament is a really fun and fast paced game, and there are a lot of reasons to tout it for what it is - a solid multiplayer first person shooter. But without better DM map design, more polished graphics and artwork and maybe more panache in the weapons design department, we don't feel that Unreal Tournament is quite ready to earn our seal of approval as the uber-shooter to carry gaming into the next millennium.
Edge (Sep 06, 1999)
However, the one saving grace is the practice mode. This enables you to customise level settings, and it’s here the game shines. The number of bots can be chosen, as well as their strength, accuracy and camping ability. Less direct elements such as the level of friendly fire and gravity can also be tweaked. And although it’s unlikely to withstand the assault of Quake III, especially in the online stakes, Unreal Tournament will definitely fill the gap. Even if it doesn’t entirely validate the concept of the bot deathmatch.
