Thunderbolt Games (Mar 30, 2009)
Thanks to the care of Telltale Games, Fright of the Bumble Bees ends up feeling just like another great Wallace and Gromit short. The story and hijinks found within could’ve been the basis for yet another Oscar winning short for director Nick Park and his team at Aardman, but instead are the premise for one of the most genuinely wonderful and funny adventure games in years. It really is a grand day out.

Good Game (Apr 06, 2009)
Other than the awesome yet un-aussie-released Harvey Birdman game, I haven’t played adventure in years Jung, mainly because I never think I’m going to have a good time with them but when this genre is done right like it is here, you really get a sense of genuine joy and accomplishment at the end - you’ll come out of this with a smile, I’m giving it 9/10.

Indeed, all I can do is sing the praises of Telltale Games’ first Wallace and Gromit game. It really is good, old fashioned adventure gaming fun. It is ideal for all the family to work on and I suspect most adults would enjoy it too. I sincerely hope that the future episodes currently planned: The Last Resort, Muzzled! and The Bogey Man, are all as well implemented and as enjoyable as this one. It really is a credit to the Wallace and Gromit name and I can heartily recommend it.

Game Over Online (Apr 01, 2009)
If the game has a serious fault, it's brevity. It's not an issue with puzzle design; barring one or two exceptions, the puzzles manage to be clever without being condescending. There simply isn't enough of them, as the game can be finished in less than six hours. This is by design of course, but some gamers may get impatient waiting several months - through to July - to see the entire experience. It's a matter of preference, ultimately.

AusGamers (May 13, 2009)
Those delightful claymation characters Wallace & Gromit have successfully leaped from TV show to cinema and now make their debut in an old-school point-and-click adventure video game. Telltale games are offering all four episodes for $34.95, this is a nice price point if the following three episodes offer this amount of game-play and charm.

If you can live with the faux-Wallace, I suggest you buy Fright of the Bumble Bees at once. If Telltale can keep up this quality, we’re looking at some Aardman-rivalling stories coming up. Fans should love it, but straight Telltale fans might find the script much less laugh-out-loud funny than Sam & Max, Strong Bad or even Bone. It beats A Vampyre Story, however (non-Telltale but a close stable-mate).

IGN (Mar 31, 2009)
This isn't a hilariously zany chapter, and if you're used to the bizarre weirdness of TellTale's Sam & Max or Strongbad episodes, you won't find it here. That's not to say that Fright of the Bumblebees isn't weird; after all, gargantuan bees that hum "God Save the Queen" isn't normal, but it fits into the overall charm of Wallace & Gromit's world. And while there's some fun dialogue, it's more about watching Gromit's exasperated expressions as he's busy saving the day. This is a promising entry for the series, and hopefully TellTale can only go up from here.

Game Revolution (Mar 31, 2009)
Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures: Fright of the Bumble Bees is an excellent start to the planned four-part series. It manages to capture everything that makes the Wallace and Gromit animated shorts so endearing, expanding it to the adventure game genre. Seeing it's just a two- to four-hour long slice of a bigger, fully priced pie, we cannot wait to see what craziness is in store for the folks at West Wallaby Street in the future episodes. Good lad, Gromit!

Minor flaws, random puzzles and eyebrow-raising double entendres aside, Telltale have done an admirable job with this first Grand Adventures episode - it's an interactive story bursting with character and humour, and genuinely feels as though it's been put together with care and a respect for its original characters. It's not a hugely long adventure, but it's an enjoyable one, and one that will leave you looking forward to the next instalment.

Video Game Generation (Mar 24, 2009)
My unfamiliarity with Wallace & Gromit prior to this game may have hurt my overall enjoyment of Fright of the Bumblebees (such as not knowing the history behind Wallace and his neighbors), but nevertheless I found it compelling enough to play through in one continuous late-night gaming session. On the whole the stellar writing and laugh out loud moments prop up an otherwise predictable storyline, making Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures: Fright of the Bumblebees a worthwhile purchase for adventure gamers.

GameSpy (Apr 02, 2009)
In the end though, Fright of the Bumblebees isn't really about solving puzzles. The gameplay may be a bit elementary but it serves its purpose. The real reason to get the game is to follow Wallace and Gromit through another madcap adventure across the English countryside. In this, the game delivers in spades by capturing the essential good natured humor of a strange little man, an even stranger dog, and the really strange situations they stumble into. If that sounds good to you, Fright of the Bumblebees is well worth picking up.

Good Game (Apr 06, 2009)
Some puzzles like the word game have real imagination behind them, and I loved the boss fight at the end. Depending on your deduction skills there’s about 4 hours here, and they’re good hours, I’m giving it 8.

Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures Episode 1: Fright of the Bumblebees is an excellent leadoff to a new adventure series for Telltale Games. Gamers who have little experience with episodic gaming may find this game to be a bit short. However, keeping in mind that there will be 4 episodes in total, the game as a whole is still well worth every cent (or every pence) paid for the season.

As an ardent fan of adventure games, and with more than two decades of fond play experiences, I’ll admit there are painfully few new puzzle types available to entertain genre fans. Therefore, the pleasure in these titles often comes from the narrative and how deftly the developers combine brain teasers with character-based humor. Telltale Games has nailed their formula, and Wallace & Gromit have become welcome additions to their growing cast of characters. While the experience is over before you know it, the beauty of this format is that we know another episode is right around the corner. I’ve logged it as appointment gaming, and I’ll tune in next time for sure.

For the Wallace & Gromit superfans, this should be a no-brainer, day one purchase. For everyone else, it’s another well-polished episodic adventure of the sort we’ve come to expect from Telltale, and even if you’re not familiar with the source material, it’s definitely worth your time.

Gamers' Temple, The (Jun 30, 2009)
I've no idea how Telltale could have done any better at bringing this world to life. The original fiction was so detailed and specific, they were always going to be working at a disadvantage. The thing that kills this game is that what lies beneath their careful world creation is mediocre. It's funny at times, it makes you feel like you're in that world (sometimes), and it's still a great experience for fans of the world. But as a game it never delivers, and as a Wallace and Gromit tale it's sadly lacking. Maybe they can fix this a bit in the next installment, which can be purchased even now. Let's hope they can, because I'll always be up for more trips to West Wallaby Street.

Unterm Strich (pardon!) erreicht Fright of the Bumble Bees die Durchschnittsqualität der Sam-&-Max-Episoden.

DarkZero (Mar 24, 2009)
Confounding puzzles aside, “Fright of the Bumblebees” functions nicely as an adventure game for just about any audience or age group. The humor is varied, the gameplay is accessible, and the challenge is substantial without being frustrating. The review build of the game had a few problems, such as its inclination to crash suddenly, but hopefully this will be patched up in time for the final PC and Xbox Live Arcade release. Buy it, enjoy it, and wait for the next few episodes to reveal themselves.

Frictionless Insight (Apr 08, 2009)
While a decent adventure, this Grand Adventure simply isn't grand enough, because they just missed the tone. The plot twists feel more suited to Sam & Max, and the adventure game absurdities are less forgivable because Wallace and Gromit demand an entirely different set of absurdities, that should be perfectly suited to the format. $35 for four episodes is likely to be a fine price once one can judge all the episodes. But speaking as an extreme fan of Wallace and Gromit, I think I enjoyed this episode less than people more casually acquainted with the pair might. The puzzles aren't particularly difficult (although some require timing and coordination), and everything else is polished, but core Wallace and Gromit followers are the most likely to find something amiss with Fright of the Bumblebees, and the most likely to be disappointed.

Overall, while it certainly captures a lot of its source material on spec, Wallace & Gromit's other strengths - Peter Sallis, Gromit shrugging or staring despondently into the camera, needless contraptions and simple directorial flourishes - are sorely missed in Fright of the Bumblebees. Fans of Telltale Games or fans of Wallace & Gromit will be far from horrified by the results, but it's hard to imagine anyone becoming enthralled, and even harder to argue that the marriage between Aardman and Telltale has lived up to its promise in this first release. We'll revisit it when the series is complete to make our minds up.
