I absolutely loved Wasteland 2. It succeeds on a variety of levels and manages to overcome its shortcomings by the sheer force of its overwhelming strengths. The gritty world and its many pitfalls create a realistic post-apocalyptic experience where every choice can mean the life or death of any or all of your friends and enemies. The responsive combat system and environment test the limits of video game problem solving, and the size of Wasteland 2’s quest bank allows for countless hours of enjoyment. The graphics aren’t great and InXile has a few kinks to work out in the game’s programming and storyline, but these become less and less apparent as Wasteland 2 sucks you into its brutal version of America.

Wasteland 2 è un prodotto nato chiaramente da passione e amore. Lungi dall'essere perfetto principalmente a causa di una eccessiva macchinosità della telecamera e dell'interfaccia di gioco si difende egregiamente sotto ogni altro aspetto offrendo un'esperienza di gioco completa e complessa. Se si stava cercando un degno erede di Fallout (I primi due) si può tranquillamente affermare che la ricerca è conclusa.
Wasteland 2 earns 4 1/2 GiN Gems for bringing us all back to that wonderful post-apocalyptic world in style. It’s probably the only reason anyone would actually hope for a nuclear war.

So schließt sich der Kreis zu den persönlichen Entbehrungen, die jeder irgendwann mal in Wasteland 2 erdulden muss, einem Spiel, das seine Herkunft stolz vor sich herträgt wie eine Trophäe. Es erinnert mal an Fallout, mal an Arcanum, und dann wieder daran, wie besonders seine Art heute geworden ist. Es macht nicht alles so gut, wie es vielleicht möglich gewesen wäre, und erzählt im großen Ganzen weniger spannend als im Kleinen. Doch Fargos InXile-Truppe hat nicht viel vergessen und liefert ein gemütliches, umfangreiches, an den richtigen Stellen in die Tiefe gehendes Endzeitabenteuer.

It’s a fantastic game; an echo of the past that simultaneously feels (in the most part) contemporary, and a game made with such a clear love, passion and vision behind it that you can’t help but feel its 26-year gestation period actually helped. If we only get one or two more Kickstarter-funded games of a similar quality to Wasteland 2, we’ll be spoilt.

A la fois old school sur bien des aspects et jusque dans ses bugs, mais moderne sur d'autres, avec l'utilisation de limites de temps sur certaines actions, Wasteland 2 n'est pas qu'un RPG à l'ancienne payé par des vieux cons nostalgiques. C'est une expérience intéressante et solide de la part d'Inxile, soutenue par une écriture fantastique et des mécanismes qui, c'est rare en RPG, fonctionnent plus ou moins, notamment car les devs vous placent dans des situations où vous pouvez les utiliser. Après quelques patchs, Wasteland 2 sera définitivement le RPG de l'année !

After a nicely drawn out Early Access period, Wasteland 2 is finally in its golden state – ready to be played by the masses. Being a gargantuan title in every way possible, I suggest taking a vacation to play this radioactive wasteland to its end. Don't expect the game to let you go easily, either. Wasteland 2 proves that even today, gamers enjoy deep and complicated games and that Kickstarter can help in producing masterpieces every once in a while. And despite its flaws – Wasteland 2 is one of those games.

These minor complaints aside, Wasteland 2 is a deep and addictive experience that will grab and hold you hard for its duration. Is it for everyone? Probably not. It has a decidedly old-school foundations that could be a put-off for new and younger gamers raised on modern day Fallouts and Skyrims. That said, for its target audience and for gamers looking for a deep and lengthy role-playing experience that steps well outside the current norm, Wasteland 2 is a near-perfect product that’s guaranteed to entertain and more than worth a purchase on Steam or at GOG.

If you can navigate the minefield of inconsistent tooltips and ugly character models, Wasteland 2 provides an old-school experience with new-school tweaks. It's set in a dark world full of bad people, and you get to do your very best to make it a little brighter. And then you're forced to realise that no matter how hard you try, you can't save everyone. It's a wonderfully old-school RPG, something fans of a bygone era can use to scratch that nostalgic itch and new gamers can use to acquaint themselves with how things once were.

Was für ein Comeback! Wasteland 2 ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie man eine Tradition aufgreifen und fortführen sollte: mit Hingabe. Das mag pathetisch klingen, aber das ist heutzutage, wo man liebgewonnene Spieleserien manchmal kaum wiedererkennt, etwas Wertvolles. Ich habe die Ausflüge als Desert Ranger sehr genossen, weil dieses Rollenspiel den Klassiker nur mit den allernötigsten Kompromissen an die Moderne fortführt, ohne dabei jedoch seinen Charakter irgendeiner Zielgruppe zu opfern. Hier wirkt das technisch Altmodische aufgrund der mittlerweile seltenen inneren Werte unheimlich charmant. Ja, die Kulisse ist nicht mehr als solide. Ja, das Kampfsystem hat seine Probleme mit der Balance – da sind XCOM und Jagged Alliance weiter. Und ja, es gibt einige ärgerliche Inkonsequenzen im Figurenverhalten. Aber Wasteland 2 ist ein episches Rollenspiel mit Seele, toller Stimmung, feinen Dialogen und überraschenden Situationen, das euch weit über 40 Stunden unterhalten wird.

Technically there is nothing stopping you from piling all points into weapon skills, but I can almost guarantee you that you will find life in the wastelands very hard indeed. Weapons, ammo and armour need to be found or bought. Without perception, you are less likely to find hidden treasures, without lockpicking skills you won’t be opening doors or crates and without computer science and safecracking skills, safes will be unwieldy lumps of steel instead of promising supply caches. Almost every skill is useful in some form or another and with over thirty skills to choose from, that is quite an achievement.

That a game can elicit such negative feelings doesn’t mean that its 60,000+ backers were wrong. To the contrary, what they like and what this game is, is precisely what a crowd-funded game should be: one that lacks mass appeal and the compromises of a game made for the general public. Wasteland 2 is an excellent game that only gets better the more you put into it. It is a challenge made specifically for those people who wanted a sequel that, without crowd funding paying much of the bill ahead of time, otherwise may never have been developed. And if it were, I doubt it could have been this excellent, and certainly not this demanding.

En tirant un peu quelques cheveux par-ci par-là, on pourrait presque dire que Wasteland 2 est le vrai Fallout 3. En tout cas, il s'agit incontestablement d'un excellent RPG à l'ancienne, capable de séduire aussi bien les joueurs trentenaires nostalgiques des Baldur's Gate et autres Planescape Torment, que ceux issus de la nouvelle génération. Les premiers retrouveront leurs marques avec grand plaisir, tandis que les seconds découvriront avec stupeur toute la richesse que peut receler un jeu de rôle réalisé avec passion. Et tous profiteront d'une écriture riche, de qualité, et non dénuée d'humour. Comme qui dirait : c'est dans les vieux post-apo qu'on fait les meilleures soupes !

Wasteland 2 se destine à celles et ceux qui se languissaient des premiers Fallout et de Wasteland premier du nom. Avec sa grande durée de vie, la vraie liberté d'approche de l'aventure et les possibilités tactiques offertes par un panel de compétences exhaustif, Wasteland 2 est un vibrant hommage aux racines du RPG post-apocalyptique. Si son ton résolument old-school et ses graphismes pas folichons rebuteront une partie du public, les autres seront assurés de passer un excellent moment à arpenter les terres désolées, peuplées d'une foule de personnages tous plus déjantés et / ou désespérés les uns que les autres. Wasteland 2 might not be the prettiest CRPG to hit digital shelves this year, but it captures the harsh hypothetical realities of the post-apocalyptic American Southwest with excellent writing, decisions with terrifying consequences, and background voice work that reinforce the human suffering that results from them. It's a game about the power of choices, and the few remaining glitches and issues with its combat do little to diminish its power.

Wasteland 2 klopt aan bijna alle kanten, het enige dat ik miste was wat meer interactie en drama met je groepsgenoten, iets dat je bijvoorbeeld in Baldur's Gate en Dragon Age wel hebt. Een andere, kleine domper is dat niet elke missie die de Desert Rangers ondernemen even boeiend is, waardoor intense interacties met de omgevingen, afgewisseld worden met vele legere, minder klikbare stukken. Desalniettemin is dit een game die de oudere RPG-lover zal laten kirren van nostalgie opwekkende onderbuikgevoelens der plezier, terwijl het de jongere rollenspeler zal laten zeggen: 'verrek... er is meer dan alleen The Elder Scrolls en Mass Effect!'

Wasteland 2 ist ein Rollenspiel zum Nach­denken - über jeden verteilten Fertigkeits­punkt, über den klügsten Weg zum Ziel und über meine Entscheidungen in Quests. Al­les, was ich mache, hat handfeste Auswir­kungen - manchmal nur im Kleinen, wenn ich einen geretteten Auftraggeber später wieder sehe, aber mehr als einmal war ich auch an der Entvölkerung ganzer Gebiete schuld. Die gelungenen Dialoge bieten beste klassische Rollenspielkost, gewürzt mit einer ganz eigenen schwarzhumorigen Note. Die Kämpfe wollen aber nicht so recht begeistern, in Divinity: Original Sin oder XCOM: Enemy Within haben mir die Rundenschlachten mit ihrer riesi­gen Vielfalt an Optionen um einiges mehr Spaß gemacht. Dabei ist es nicht mal so, dass sie in Wasteland schlecht sind, aber sie sind eben »nur« grundsolide. Und grundso­lide passt einfach nicht zum sonst so ehr­geizigen Rest. Wasteland 2 ist trotzdem ein tolles Rollenspiel der alten Schule gewor­den, hat aber auch Potenzial verschenkt.

Vreau să subliniez din nou cât de frumos poate fi Wasteland 2 la dialog, la poveste, la personaje, atmosferă, lume, explorare, alegerile morale foarte dureroase și subtilitățile sale minunate. Apoi sunt luptele. Merg. Dacă erau mai multe moduri de a le ocoli, ca prin furișat, mergeau și mai bine. Cu neajunsurile sale, și ocazionalul bug ce nu a fost reparat, ca unele capcane care vor exploda oricum după ce le dezamorsezi sau AI-ul inamic învârtindu-se în cerc când nu știe în cine să dea, vă încurajez să îl jucați. Nu este prea scump, fiind acum la un preț redus de sărbători.

Wasteland 2 is an expansive game that demands to be replayed again and again to get the best out of it. While a lot of the detailed mechanics feel somewhat archaic, they're not going to hold back dedicated players who want to micromanage and really role play their group of characters. It has all of the familiar elements and even if some aspects of its presentation are not quite up to modern standards, its design and gameplay are timeless and welcome.

Une chose est sure : plus on passe de temps avec nos rangers, plus on a envie de les accompagner, même s’ils ne sont pas beaux, qu’ils ne savent pas se déplacer discrètement ou qu’ils se battent de manière un peu trop conventionnelle. Le truc (il y a toujours un truc) est de savoir ce qu’on recherche : quelqu’un capable de se satisfaire d’un gameplay perfectible pour faire l’expérience d’un univers cohérent, implacable et irrésistible s’y plongera à corps perdu. A l’inverse, un joueur ne jurant que par le gameplay et capable de s’accommoder d’un background simplement bon lui préférera le dernier Divinity. Mais les deux titres sont les preuves irréfutables que le financement participatif peut engendrer des titres exceptionnels, majeurs. Le jeu de rôle PC vient d’entamer une renaissance flamboyante. Vivement la suite.

Wasteland 2 is a deliberately classical RPG which is what made PC gaming special in the good old days. But you know what? It works. And this style of game is clearly coming back into vogue with the success of its Kickstarter, and with the success of Torment and Pillars of Eternity. Wasteland 2 does have some rough edges around it, especially with regards to the UI, but the game is still fun to play, even if it is a challenging game.

However. There’s a level of roughness here that I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed by after such a long development time. For every smartly written sequence with vibrant locations and characters, there’s an aimless fetch quest or an overlong combat section. Oddly enough, despite the content added in Wasteland 2’s extra year of production, I think the game could have benefited from being cut down, edited to emphasise the best bits and get rid of some of the clutter. I like Wasteland 2, I really do, but I can’t help but think it’s not quite the masterpiece we were promised.

Den Neustart nach ein, zwei Spielstunden sollte man einkalkulieren: Erst wenn man ungefähr weiß, welche Skills absolut notwendig zum Überleben sind, kann man die komplexe Charaktererstellung zu Beginn wirklich wertschätzen. Aber das ist typisch für Wasteland 2: Es ist ein unbequemes Spiel, das sich immer wieder hinter dem "Aber früher war das doch auch so!"-Argument versteckt. Mag sein, aber früher war eben auch nicht alles besser. Ich bin auch ein Fan alter Rollenspiele und liebe die Art, wie Wasteland 2 Entscheidungsvielfalt und Entdeckerdrang in den Vordergrund stellt. Aber die Wartezeiten beim Skill benutzen und der Speicher-und-Lade-Wahnsinn vor dem Öffnen einer Kiste muss doch heutzutage wirklich nicht mehr sein! Von der miesen KI mal ganz zu schweigen, die hätte ich auch damals nicht entschuldigt!

Wasteland 2 is exactly the sort of game the industry should be making. It's a clear labor of love featuring clever mechanics, novel design ideas and lovely, if sparse aesthetic design. Wasteland 2 is so packed with stuff to do and things to see that the game demands multiple plays, yet its story options are so intricate that replaying the plot never seems like a chore. But all of that is overshadowed by omnipresent bugs. Most often they're benign and understandable, but when you've forgotten to save for two hours then attempt to travel back to the Ranger Citadel only to have the game crash and lose your progress, it's hard to feel anything but rage. I hold out hope that InXile will be able to patch the game in rapid fashion, but until those bugs are squashed fans of the post-apocalypse are better off spending their time in New Vegas.
