Watch_Dogs has its up and downs. The game was designed to put control into the player’s hands and it succeeded. I thought the concept was incredibly epic and it didn’t leave me with that “I wish I could do this” feeling I get from some games. The power to play the game how you want is also a bonus. Also, if you’re looking for a game with a ton of replay value, Watch_Dogs will definitely do it. While I figured Watch_Dogs would have been a more sophisticated version of GTA, it isn’t. It can be frenetic at times and sometimes, that’s all you need to have some fun.

Watch Dogs feels like your traditional blockbuster game. While offering a smattering of mechanics which are fun to play with, the game attempts to color within the lines of traditional design and give players the experience expected of an Ubisoft product. With so much riding on the line, it is hard to find fault in Ubisoft’s safe strategy. I don’t blame Watch Dogs for not taking chances, but it makes it impossible to really fall in love with the game. AAA games are something different these days, they are investments which need to work within the expectations we have forged over the years with established publishers. While it means we’ll get polished games with bits of flair, it also means games like Watch Dogs fail to give us something truly exciting.

I was mere hours from posting a review on Sunday with a greatly reduced score attached when a patch resolved most of my performance problems. [Note: I can only assume there was a stealth patch, since it simply started running well where it had not before.] Watch Dogs on PC still isn't a fantastically well optimized game, but my nearly four-year-old GTX 570 is able to deliver over 30fps (sometimes over 60) on medium settings. I do experience a few dropped frames here and there, but as of this writing it's otherwise just as good as the PS4 version (better, if you've got newer hardware) and just as easy to recommend. Naturally you do have to suffer through the inconvenience of Ubisoft's Uplay login nonsense, and Aiden's smartphone menu system is a pain to navigate with the mouse.

Watch Dogs doesn't have that promising kernel. It certainly entertains, but mostly through borrowed concepts, and the central notion that could have made it stand out - the hacking - is the most undercooked of all. It doesn't get anything horribly wrong, but nor does it excel at any of the genre beats it so faithfully bangs out. It's good, and yet that always feels like a criticism when a game comes weighed down by this much hype. You won't regret the time you spend in Aiden Pearce's world, but nor will it be saved as a precious memory when you reboot.

Game Watcher (May 27, 2014)
Although reluctant to make comparisons with the Grand Theft Auto series, the fact that Watch Dogs doesn’t quite match the same free roaming open-world standard quickly becomes an obvious elephant in the room. Ubisoft Montreal should certainly be applauded for trying something new within the bounds of the genre - hacking in Watch Dogs is genuinely innovative, despite the threat of gimmickry - however, Watch Dogs has ultimately failed to live up to its hype. It’s good, but it could, and probably should, have been great. The underlying irony of Watch Dogs is the fact that the game itself suffers a bit too much from an identity crisis.

Games.cz (May 31, 2014)

PCGamesN (Jun 04, 2014)
Watch Dogs is a monster, in size and ambition. But it’s Frankenstein’s monster, with bits and pieces from other Ubisoft properties - Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Splinter Cell - stitched together with elements of the open-world Godfather, Grand Theft Auto. Beneath the huge playground, with its dramatic action sequences set across multiple city blocks and plethora of side content, is a game that’s emblematic of the the open world genre’s failings as well as its strengths. It is Open World: The Game, and as such, struggles to find an identity of its own beyond its entertaining hacking hook and the inspired multiplayer. But those two elements make up a sizeable portion of the game. There are moments of genuine brilliance buried in the game that elevates it above mediocrity, but its reliance on increasingly tired design does it a disservice.

So that’s that. Watch Dogs. Ubisoft’s disappointment of the decade. For a game that’s been delayed 8 months, I can’t imagine what it looked like when they made that decision. Regardless, I shall eat my own words if and when Ubisoft fixes all these issues and provides a seamless game, as they advertised. Was it right of me to direct my speech at the game’s mistakes instead of the good things? Considering the title itself and all the hype behind it, absolutely and, in my honest opinion, the decision of spending money for a next-gen experience that’s more backwards than GTA V is entirely up to the reader. In short, it’s an amusing and innovative game, but certainly not worth the AAA branding.

Decent, but not great. Watch Dogs is certainly worth playing, but it's not even close to living up to what's been shown off since it was announced.
