A very difficult game for those who learned strategy gaming from the C&C model. But well worth a visit from anybody that enjoys both the history and strategies of one of Europe's most famous engagements.

I found Waterloo to be a solid, well-done period piece of war gaming. I cannot recommend it to everyone, as it will simply overwhelm some gamers. If you are a fan of the genre, history or war gaming in general then this is a must have title.
GameSpot (Apr 03, 2001)
Nevertheless, Waterloo should have a long life home on many wargamers' hard drives. The gameplay is generally quite good, even with the graphic slowdowns and the other occasional problems. After all, the underlying game design was already top-notch in Waterloo's predecessors, and the improvements added for Waterloo are impressive. So even though the game engine is definitely showing its age, hard-core strategy game players should still find a lot to like about Waterloo.
Absolute Games ( (Apr 07, 2001)
Electric Games (May 17, 2001)
Overall, I'd recommend this game to those who are more than mildly interested in this type of historical wargame. I have found that hardcore wargamers are more interested in content than a pretty package. While the upgraded graphics look good, they do not match up with some of the more modern games with prettier pictures. This game definitely puts its best effort into being as good a wargame as it can be, play-wise. Bottom Line: Decent graphics but look somewhat dated. Learning curve is fairly high and will most likely frustrate the more casual gamer. Wargame fans will appreciate the detail and expanded options available in this game over previous versions of the engine.

The game system just isn’t built to handle battles as big as the one that ended the Napoleonic Wars. Since it’s this very scope that makes wargames compelling, WATERLOO misses the mark.
