Despite the combat system needing some work and some other minor annoyances like only being allowed to change options in a pre-game launcher, I have to say that The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings is one of the best experiences I had in years. Even though I hate the combat at times, even though the alchemy system caused my head to spin as I searched for components, and even though my computer would smoke as I raised the settings, I loved every minute, till the rushed ending. But so-so ending aside, The Witcher 2 is one of the most fully realized videogame experiences I have had the joy to play. From the striking world, to the engaging characters and a deep story, I just could not stop playing this game. It is a true triumph and raises the bar for RPG’s to an extremely high level and I cannot wait to see more from this studio.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the finest examples of how great an RPG can be. The fighting is fast paced, the story is grown-up and deeply intriguing with a multitude of possible outcomes depending on your choices. Do you pursue you love interest between Triss or ignore it on quest of vengeance to clear you name. Will you try to resolve sticky situations with words or end conflicts with the sharp end of your sword? The choices are entirely up to you and it beacons you to play it again and again to take those other paths not taken. This is a must buy for the adult RPG fans out there. You won’t be disappointed.

Ironhammers (Jun 02, 2011)
I was absolutely thrilled with The Witcher 2. I found nothing to be severely lacking, had an immensely immersive gaming experience and fell a little bit in love with Geralt. I think that CDP RED achieved as much as they said they would, and lovingly crafted what I expect to be a top contender as my personal choice for Game of the Year. Realistic characters, voices, sounds and choices made this title appeal to me in a way that very few games have before. The series is based on novels, and I totally feel that when I play. I give The Witcher 2 a highly coveted Ironhammers’ 5/5, and I defy anyone who has played it through to challenge me on my score.

The fundamental fact about The Witcher 2 is that it's good enough to take itself seriously. Its earnestness would be ridiculous is a lesser game. There's a fundamental maturity about The Witcher 2, with its earthy vulgarity, old-school hardcore RPG gameplay, rich graphics that don't have to be flashy, complex challenging combat, and superlative low-fantasy writing that relies on people instead of all-powerful doo-dads. It's one of the most memorable and best written fantasy video games you'll ever play.

I've said my piece on this game, and only have left to wonder why you haven't played it yet. I could go on and write a few more pages on the excellent presentation, voice acting, and storytelling are some of the best money can buy, but that's better seen than told. The same goes for the art direction, and how the RED engine does nothing but uphold the vivid imaginations which bring The Witcher 2 to life, to the point that "eye-popping" isn't hyperbole anymore. There's that, and then there's the fact that once I finished a 33-hour game, I couldn't wait to revisit the world again in a second play with entirely different results; a rarity considering the unending contention to play as much as I can with only so many hours in a day. Oh and the women. Are so fine.

It’s not often I feel like applauding when the credits roll on a videogame, but this time, I may have put my hands together for the folks at CD Projekt RED Studio. Seemingly out of nowhere, they have produced a game that can easily hang with the multi-million dollar triple-A crowd. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is clearly a labor of love, with tremendous thought put into the story, presentation, and writing. If you have a PC capable of running it, do not hesitate to play it. If you don’t…well, this is one of the best arguments in favor of high-end PC gaming to come along in quite some time. You might want to start pricing video cards.

The Witcher 2 couldn’t have been released at a better time - that is to say, six months before Skyrim. Not that The Witcher 2 is a simple appetizer to hold us over. Don’t get me wrong because it deserves better than that. Every aspect of this game speaks to its incredibly high quality. Likewise, the branching storyline, multiple endings and various ways players can level Geralt will ensure tons of replay value for the serious role-playing gamer. It may not end up being the best RPG of the year, but it’s most definitely one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played.
GamePro (US) (May 23, 2011)
The Witcher 2 embodies everything that's good about PC development, and everything that makes it, in my mind, the best platform out there. It tells a mature tale full of intrigue, mystery, and frustrating but satisfying combat, and while it is difficult (remember, there is no shame in playing on easy if you're having trouble; no one's going to take your gamer cred away from you for doing so), it's bound to please any RPG player who gives it a try.

games xtreme (Jun 24, 2011)
I’d say this is the best PC fantasy RPG of 2011 so far, I can’t see much in the way of third person action RPGs beating the Witcher 2. It’s certainly far more expansive than others and only Skyrim has a chance to compete but that’s in a sandbox fantasy game-space and the Witcher 2 is a linear story, with non-linear events and several vastly different pathways through certain chapters. You need to play this one more than once to get the best out of it. If you have a fairly decent rig you’ll see some amazing things, if you have a low end rig, you’ll get a damn fine looking game regardless. Witcher 2 is a game you can’t afford to miss out on... A grand job all round and well deserving of the score that it’s been given.

Come avrei potuto salvare quel bambino?
Softpedia (May 28, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is quirky and exciting, the kind of game that surprises almost every hour with something that just would not happen in, say, a similar title from BioWare. Sometimes this oddness can be a bit overwhelming and leaves the player a bit confused, but most of the time it impresses and enchants, creating one of the best role-playing experience of the last few years. I personally didn't feel as engaged with an RPG and its universe since the days of my youth and my multiple playthroughs of Baldur's Gate 2 and it's delightful to get a game that can make me feel the same as that jewel of a game. All role-playing fans owe it to themselves to buy and play the game at least once, if not twice, to get all it can offer and gamers that are interested in other genres can also take a look at The Witcher 2 as one of the games that can show why the RPG genre has such long-standing, hardcore fans.
Impulse Gamer (Jun, 2011)
In the end, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a visually impressive game that contains a very sturdy gaming engine. If you haven't played a traditional RPG in awhile, the learning curve is a little steep and challenging at the start but once you have the experience under your belt and selected a direction for your character, battles will slowly become easier but fortunately there is always something along the way to challenge you. This is what RPG's are all about and I sincerely hope that this game will become the template for games to come on the PC. Highly Recommended!
RPGFan (May 28, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is everything that a good sequel should be. A continued story, yet one told differently and one that touches difference spheres of meaning. Restrained and realistic references to the original. Riskier, grittier, more confident presentation and design. And fidelity to the heart of the series: Geralt the wise, Geralt the great. Those with appreciation for a masterfully crafted world, magic, and passion will find something exceptional in The Witcher 2: a world worth seeing, a story worth hearing, and a character worth stepping into. That questions remain after the conclusion of Assassins of Kings only means Geralt has more work to do. After all, a witcher's work is never complete, and I would have it no other way.

Wszystko to w niebywałej oprawie graficznej i w akompaniamencie świetnej muzyki. Czego więc chcieć więcej?
Meristation (May 20, 2011)
Bit-Tech (May 17, 2011)
It’s true that you could likely boot up The Witcher 2 with no idea of what it was, hacking and slashing your way through without a care, but doing so would be a travesty. The Witcher 2 is one of the most exciting and involving RPGs we’ve seen in a long, long time. It forms a logical competitor to more action-oriented titles, such as Mass Effect, and succeeds where previous pretenders, such as Dragon Age 2, have failed. Those who can bear the QTEs and practice finding hotspots, who take the time to immerse themselves in the world and understand the characters will find an experience that’ll be tough to beat - not just for future RPGs, but all future titles.
Game Freaks 365 (Jul 01, 2011)
Playing it, I am reminded of HBO’s Game of Thrones in the way that it develops deep, rich characters. There are only a few issues with the gameplay. It is sometimes frustrating as the combat could be a little more responsive. My greatest complaint stems from the menu system, especially the inventory, which could use more refinement. Those issues are minor and can be easily forgiven considering how engrossing The Witcher 2 is. It is one of the most creative RPGs of this generation and reminds me of the first Mass Effect in its passion for storytelling.
CPU Gamer (Jun 08, 2011)
The Witcher is very definition of a new and improved sequel. CD Projekt Red Studio have taken their new engine and crafted a new Witcher game that improves upon nearly everything that they had in place in the first. While some may lament that their favorite characters from the original didn’t make it to the sequel, the characters on hand are still compelling enough. Certainly while you won’t have nearly as many options for sexual partners this time around, you will find that the sex scenes themselves are far more graphic and, in the very first instance, quite entertaining. Having said all of that and despite some tiny nitpicking issues, The Witcher 2 is simply “the AAA RPG title of the Year” to date and a certain candidate for Game of the Year.
GameTrailers (May 23, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is bold, inspired and not afraid to take some risks, but neither does it work overly hard to endear itself to less patient players. In the end though, it's a no-brainer of a deal. This standout RPG is among the best in years and one that simply begs for multiple playthroughs. If you have any sort of affection for this sort of game, you can't afford to miss it.
Hooked Gamers (May 25, 2011)
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an important game. It doesn’t treat you like a child or insult your intelligence. It doesn’t feel the need to expand its audience. It doesn’t cater to the lowest common denominator. Instead, it expects more of you. It expects you to follow an intricate plot and understand complex characters, to make difficult decisions based off of nothing but your own moral code, to think and strategize before and during combat (at least for a time). Because of all that, it’s immensely captivating and satisfying. Yes, it could use a minor patch or two. But this game is worth talking about. It should be talked about. This is the sort of game that gamers should point to and declare to all developers, PC and console alike, “See how this game treated me as an adult, with respect? Make yours do that too.”
3D Juegos (May 20, 2011)
Gameplay (Benelux) (May 27, 2011)
Absolutamente no.

Game Informer Magazine (May 19, 2011)
You can pick apart the small missteps in the nuts and bolts of The Witcher 2 all day, but you'd be missing the forest for the trees. I play role-playing games to explore fantastic worlds, interact with interesting characters, and pull off bada*s stunts that only a world-saving hero could accomplish. The Witcher 2 obliterates all but the best competition on those criteria. As frustrating as it can be at times, this adventure's charms vastly outweigh its warts.
Vandal Online (Jun 29, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is a game that is so much more than just beautiful visuals. The intricately designed storyline has plenty of surprises in store with both friend and foe blurring into a single domain. While the combat does take a little time to master properly, it’s not enough to deter you from enjoying the game in all its glory. If you’re looking for a new RPG that has a stellar storyline accompanied by amazing visual work, then this is the game to get.

Masterpiece? Not yet, but CD Projekt RED almost hit the bulls-eye. There’s no doubt that Assassins of Kings is the type of game you have to play at least twice to make sure you didn’t miss any mission, cave or puzzle with wall signs and the locked coffers promising huge treasures. You’re free to evolve in an almost real world, one that won’t forgive or forget, that will tempt you with perfect breasts this second only to poison and kill you in the next. Your choices matter right up to the last cinematic and I really hope that the future add-ons or even Witcher III will continue to take them into account. It’s true that fights are maybe too simple, the GUI a bit awkard at first and the difficulty will kill you, so you need a little patience until the game is released from its shackles. And when it is… dark and loving, brave and treacherous, Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings offers almost everything you could want from a fantasy RPG.
Ten Ton Hammer (May 30, 2011)
While there are some flaws in The Witcher 2, this is the best game that I’ve played in over a decade and breathes new life into the moribund single-player RPG. With its immersive world setting, nuanced choices that aren’t clear cut good or evil, and large number of quests to eat up all your free time (and more!), Witcher 2 has become the game to beat in the RPG market. The game is engrossing, frustrating, rewarding, and, most of all, fun! If BioWare doesn’t look out, there’ll be a new RPG sheriff in town and he’ll have a Polish accent.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is everything the first game should've been and more. Combat is swift and brutal. The graphics are gorgeous and the animations flows. The unfolding plot is well-written and compelling. It's shorter than its predecessor, but there's more replayability than in pretty much any other RPG in recent memory. Don't get me wrong – The Witcher 2 demands a lot of the player, in terms of both understanding the combat and understanding the plot – but for those willing to put in time and effort, this is a must.
92 (May 23, 2011)
The A.V. Club (May 23, 2011)
It’s easy to lose yourself in the experience of The Witcher 2. Geralt’s role as detective, exterminator, and hand of justice is just flexible enough to accommodate all types of role-players. Choices peppered about the game let players nudge his performance toward the poles of self-interest and honor. And yet in spite of multiple paths and endings, you’re still neck-deep in Witcher 2’s cruel world. It isn’t a terrible place to be.
Game Shark (May 26, 2011)
Quibbles aside, The Witcher 2 is an incredible achievement in graphical fidelity, branching storytelling, and just flat out smart gameplay. It's not as long as the first game, and the final chapter's story arc does feel rushed, but any issues are massively outweighed by the brilliance of this design. As Geralt you'll face some remarkably difficult decisions and you'll never quite know who to trust or if you're doing the right thing. If you've got the PC hardware to make it go and the stomach for some of the uglier things it has to say about humanity, this is a game you absolutely shouldn't miss; a strong game of the year contender.
Spazio Games (May 19, 2011)
Girl Gamers UK (Jun 20, 2011)
Although some gamers will consider The Witcher 2 to be the best thing to happen to RPGs since the dawn of time, others will find the game too difficult, too involved or even too lacking in swag. If you are the kind of longtime RPG gamer who takes their gaming seriously, then The Witcher 2 will tick all of your boxes. If you are more casual or are just dipping your toes into the pool of RPG gaming, then you may well do better to look elsewhere, at least for your introduction to the genre. With the game coming to the Xbox360 and making itself available to gamers who may not have experienced PC RPG gaming, it will be interesting to see if the game is dumbed down for that audience. I hope not because, as it stands right now, The Witcher 2 is a breath of fresh air that brings enough new ideas to the genre that it could change the shape of future RPGs.
RPG Site (Jun 11, 2011)
Let me perfectly clear - pound for pound, The Witcher 2 is definitely a memorable and undeniably compelling work of pure craftsmanship, and comes highly recommended for both PC RPG loyalists and those looking for something to really sink free time into. However, I would also strongly advocate newcomers to play the first game, if not to witness a textbook example of how to radically improve upon a game in a real tangible way. Let us just hope that the team at CD Projekt RED take note of the flaws I noted above while working on the inevitable Witcher 3.
Legendra (May 22, 2011)

A lot of games come close to “getting it right.” The Witcher 2 nails it in pretty much every category. With a ton of impressive moments, great presentation and a killer story, The Witcher 2 forces the RPG to grow up, and the result is a truly fantastic experience. Any fans of great action, story or games in general shouldn't miss The Witcher 2.

Just one word? That is impossible. Unless YES (!!) was an option! The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will keep you entertained for hours. It’s challenging, rewarding and best of all entertaining. I hope CD Projekt RED keeps bringing things like this to the table.
Game Vortex (Jul 06, 2011)
I don't dislike change, but let's just say the The Witcher 2 takes some getting used to. Even if you're new to the game, it's going to take some trial-and-error to get started. Still, the pace of the game is refreshing, and combat feels more, well, involved. I'd say it feels more dangerous, but heck, it always felt that way. The Witcher 2 brings you back to a bigger, prettier dark world. It doesn't let you sleep for the ride either.
Overall, The Witcher 2 is a great RPG, and is really good looking to boot. If you like an RPG where you can really lose yourself in a beautiful world (well, some of the world is a stink-hole but it looks pretty darn realistic nonetheless) and really immerse yourself in the politics and plots of a living, breathing, somewhat dark tinted kingdom, The Witcher 2 should be on your list. It builds upon an already good-but-flawed title and really ups the ante in a big way. There is still Skyrim to show up later this year, but The Witcher 2 could prove a spoiler for the RPG Game of the Year crown. If it wins, it will certainly deserve to be there.
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is one of the most satisfying role-playing experiences to come down the pike in some time. Even though it has a few rough spots, including graphical glitches and action-heavy combat system that taxes the fingers, there is no denying the immersive charm that awaits those willing to take up Geralt’s cause. Fans of grimy high fantasy with intriguing plots, interesting characters, and fierce combat, CD Projekt Red has something for you.

If you like RPG’s, there is no excuse for you not to play The Witcher 2 in the near future. You will not be disappointed in the slightest bit. It screams quality through its entirety and it’s plain to see that this is a labor of love from CD Projekt RED and should be in your collection.
PixlBit (Jul 15, 2011)
Even with the knowledge of the unsatisfying end I still think anyone who loves RPGs should pick this game up and invest the time to learn the world, for it is full of remarkable moments.
Despite its technical issues, The Witcher 2 is a more successful attempt to create a world and choices that matter in a CRPG than gamers have likely ever seen before. Don't miss it!
Thunderbolt Games (Jun 27, 2011)
Persistent quality exerts itself throughout The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Its story isn’t afraid to delve into an often bewildering world of complex politics, but at its core it’s a character tale. Backed by superb fantasy writing and a fantastic sense of moral ambiguity seeped into the choices you make and the ramifications they have on the world and the narrative. It’s a smart, refreshingly dark take on RPGs, complemented by action-oriented and tactical combat with a surprising amount of depth. It has its flaws but they’re only minor in what is a landmark title and a series we can only hope will long continue.

Monsterjægeren Geralt vil godt lige have en alvorssnak med holdet bag Dragon Age 2. Med The Witcher 2: Assassination of Kings demonstrerer CD Projekt RED, hvordan kagen skal skæres når der skal laves ordenligt fantasy
GamingBolt (May 29, 2011)
CDProjekt were kind of enough to send me the Digital Premium Edition which sells for about $45 at and the game was packed in with extra goodies like art books, pamphlets, game guides and more. For me that offer is a steal. Not to mention that the game in itself is an achievement, but these small add-ons goes a long way in deciding the value for money factor for gamers. It was also recently revealed all DLC for the game will be free which I think will add a lot of value to an already great game. With Witcher 2, Cdprojekt have shown the video games industry that money can take a back seat and gamers will be put first. Overall, Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a landmark game in the esteemed history of PC gaming.

Alles wahrlich kein Grund, an diesem Spiel vorbeizugehen.

AusGamers (May 25, 2011)
As an RPG, currently exclusive to PC, this comes highly recommended as it provides a compelling and mature story, great combat (eventually), all wrapped up in what is clearly one of the most visually impressive games to be released in a long time.

Worth Playing (Jun 02, 2011)
As with the original game, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings made me agonize over who to ally with, who to believe, and which side should benefit from a Witcher's skill. Every subtle choice suggestively pointed the way to further mischief and greater adventure. There's plenty to craft, imbibe, gamble and slay amid this twisting narrative. For me, it was the occasionally bitter fruit of consequence and the colorful characters cheerily serving it that made this a brilliant, rich journey into the deep mysteries and dark secrets of a land torn apart by the ruthless and the questionably virtuous. The Witcher 2 is an adventure that's well worth the coppers.
It's possible that the issues will be rectified in due time (with some already completely fixed), and if you can ignore them completely or begin your playthrough prior to a patch... you can see where the score would go. While the gameplay is by no means perfect, and the story may not be to everyone's tastes, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an in-depth, complex and powerful RPG with an immense level of detail poured into every nook and cranny. This is a game that paves the way for what RPGs of this kind should strive to be. If you've got the PC for it, you must buy The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, as it is not only an incredible experience but one of the best RPGs ever made.
Lazygamer (Jun 02, 2011)
It is somewhat disappointing that the game, a relatively short 30 hour romp, ends before the story actually does, something that hints (in a nudge nudge, wink, wink manner) that there’s a sequel coming. I can’t say I’m too disappointed, mind, because the Witcher 2 is one the best and most immersive RPGs to come along in decades, and one of the best games of the year. If you like RPGs at all, even just a little, you should have this game.

The Witcher 2 er gjennomført kvalitet.
GameZ (May 27, 2011)

Games Aktuell (May 17, 2011)
There's almost no aspect of The Witcher 2 that doesn't come with some minor flaws, but that's almost to be expected with a game of this scope. You can, on average, get 30-40 hours of playtime out of it, even more if you dig into the many sidequests. And the minor flaws are exactly that - minor. Overall, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an impressive piece of work. It looks great, it sounds great and the story and the universe are both well crafted. It should appeal to all fans of the genre. It's a game with some huge ambitions, and CD Projekt RED has managed to pull them all off. This is roleplaying games at their best.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (May 17, 2011)
Cheat Code Central (May 19, 2011)
It's difficult to fully emphasize how immersive and impressive The Witcher 2 is. With their second game, CD Projekt has become the new champion of the Western RPG genre, blending a complex yet compelling story featuring truly impactful role-playing choices with a near-perfectly executed world. Other developers will likely be looking to The Witcher 2 for inspiration for years to come, and no fan of the Western role-playing genre should miss this game. Stop making excuses, RPG fans, and go upgrade that computer. This game is worth it.

GameSpot (May 23, 2011)
Like many ambitious games, The Witcher 2 requires you to shoulder some minor burdens; in this case, it's a finale without bite and some unfortunate bugs. Yet, you rarely sense that any given element suffered because more attention was given to another. This distinguished game makes an important statement: Visual beauty, challenging action, and game-changing decisions can coexist in a modern RPG. In one beauteous stroke, The Witcher 2 has raised the stakes. No longer need we accept that role-playing games must sacrifice the quality of one element in favor of another. Instead, we are allowed to have it all. And how wonderful that we have it right here, right now, in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
GameSpy (May 23, 2011)
Not even a terrible introductory sequence can take away from what is otherwise a fantastic game. Sure, the story is goofy, and at times the fighting is offensively clunky. The world isn't as colossal as the first Witcher's, and the ending is a bit of a tease. But in a time when I rarely bother to finish single-player games, I'm happy (and slightly embarrassed) to say that I'm already several hours into a second playthrough of Assassins of Kings. And I can't think of a better compliment than that.
Games On Net (May 20, 2011)
In spite of all of the small flaws there is one thing that makes The Witcher 2 one of the best RPGs of recent years; it's one of those rarest of beasts, an RPG than emphasises the RP element over all else. The story is captivating, sad and tragic, the characters are believable and the decisions are gloriously meaningful. It's a labour of love, mature in all the right ways and about as morally ambiguous as you could want.
90 (May 23, 2011)
The game can be finished off in a bit less than half the time it took to edge your way to the finish line of the original Witcher. Where the first game clocked in around 80 hours its sequel packs in a trimmer 30-or-so, and the effect of a shorter game becomes obvious with its slightly abrupt conclusion. But regardless of some occasional wobbles this is one of the most ambitious, darkest, and legitimately smart additions to the genre you'll have the luck of playing. Just get yourself a bloody decent PC.
Gameswelt (May 20, 2011)
90 (UK) (May 20, 2011)
Fans of RPGs should consider The Witcher 2 a must-buy. There's simply no competitor that can touch it in terms of poise, characterisation and storytelling, or the way in which it treats you not as a player - someone to be pandered to and pleased - but as an adult, free to make your own mistakes and suffer a plot in which not everyone gets what they deserve. Everybody else should approach excitedly, but with a little caution. The Witcher 2's opening ten hours are as impressive as they are clumsy, and a little patience is needed until the game hits its stride. What a stride, though. What bravery and gravity. With a little time investment, this game offers everything the fantasy genre can be.
IGN (May 24, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is a dense, deep role-playing experience where your decisions have a significant impact on not only the structure of individual quests but also the direction of the main plot. Its world is stunningly realized with beautiful effects and an obsessive attention to detail. The plot stubbornly refuses to slow down and often unexpectedly spirals into crescendos of betrayals and wild revelations involving a huge cast of scheming characters who don't feel like tired video game stereotypes; they feel human. The atmosphere of The Witcher 2 is one of unrivaled authenticity. The Witcher 2 is alternately offensive and endearing, grimy and gorgeous, and never ceases to surprise. It's one of the great titles of 2011, and one of the best role-playing games in years.
Game Watcher (May, 2011)
Frustrating. Buggy. Irritating. Incomplete. These are just some of the words that describes The Witcher 2, arguably our most anticipated game of the year. But there’s more. Epic. Stunning. Gorgeous. Thrilling. Classic. CD Projekt have definitely crafted a masterpiece, but it’s by no means a perfect one.
90 (May 23, 2011)
90 (May, 2011)
90 (May 19, 2011)
PC Gamer (May 19, 2011)
Ultimately, The Witcher 2′s only major crime is simple: failing to live up to its own high standards, even after exceeding almost everyone else’s with fire and passion and style. All things considered, that’s not a difficult thing to forgive. Forgetting? Overlooking? Not so easy. Still, last minute collapse onto its own silver sword aside, this is one of the most impressive RPGs you'll ever play.
Mana Pool (May 03, 2012)
Best of all, the game’s makers have been slowly adding in new features since the launch. The tutorial I mentioned came with a free combat arena expansion. And this month sees the release of the Enhanced Edition, which all previous editions automatically upgrade to. It adds even more depth, quests and characters than ever before. This is a good game, and a good time to buy it. Get in there.
PC Games (Germany) (May 17, 2011)
USA Today (Jun 05, 2011)
Shortcomings aside, "The Witcher: Assassins of Kings" is a beautiful, challenging and gratifying role-playing adventure for PC gamers. Its intense combat, story-altering decisions and variety of environments, creatures and weapons all make for a memorable summer blockbuster.
gamrReview (May 31, 2011)
On the whole, The Witcher 2 is one half of a brilliant game. The large, overarching problem into which almost everything else fits is that it’s unfinished. The ending is clearly rushed, side quests are thin on the ground, dialogue hasn’t been checked for continuity, and frame rate clearly has not been optimised. What’s there is excellent, of course. The dialogue is well written, the story is interesting, and the combat is far more tactical and enjoyable than before. Everything takes place in a beautiful setting with a fascinating background. The variety in the main campaign itself is of a level that most games can only dream of. With the diversions – side quests and decent minigames – of the first game intact, and a little more time spent, this could have been a truly incredible RPG, to blow all others out of the water. It’s a testament to the game that even what is left is so enjoyable. As it stands, it’s a great experience and a solid RPG, but it could have been so much more.
GameStar (Germany) (May 17, 2011)
NZGamer (Jun 03, 2011)
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings squares up well with the fantasy-gaming yardstick. It’s a seriously impressive game that has loads of character and narrative depth. For fantasy RPGs this is crucial, so its great to see The Witcher 2 charging past with flying colours. As a game, and not a story, its got a few operational issues that distract from the overall experience. These are problematic, but are by no means fatal. And in fact, some of them are only all the more obvious because of the polish and spit everywhere else. The Witcher 2 is a worthy successor to its elder brother. Compared to what came before, it’s a more mature experience - and a more complete game. PC gamers looking to support the continued evolution their platform of choice owe it to escapism to give The Witcher a second go.
Gameplanet (Jun 27, 2011)
Assassins of Kings' design philosophy promotes quality with individual style, and a very deliberate approach to the genre. There's also a well written storyline with some clever twists and turns, and a level of maturity that doesn't patronize or try to shock the player. All these things combine to what is arguably the best role-playing game of the year – or at least until Skyrim.
Inside Gaming (Jun 30, 2011)
If you have a seminal RPG void in your heart that wasn’t filled by Dragon Age II, you’ve found the perfect surrogate. The Witcher 2 improves universally over the original, and also manages to be the best looking PC game at the same time. If you’re a fan of meaty RPGs or if you’ve been desperate to stretch your computer’s technical legs, you need to play The Witcher 2.
84 (May 19, 2011)
NowGamer (May 17, 2011)
This is overshadowed by a story that’s deeply engaging and offers thought-provoking choices that few games can match. The Epilogue will open up more questions than it answers, but when you look back at the tough decisions you made to reach your destination, it’s clear that this journey was its own reward.
Gaming Nexus (Jun 10, 2011)
The Witcher 2 does an admirable job of carrying forward the intriguing dark fantasy setting. Once over the steep cliff of a learning curve, players will find a very detailed and rewarding action fantasy adventure. Still, The Witcher 2 is not for everyone--this is a very gritty and quite adult-oriented outing. That being said, but for a few slight hiccups here and there, The Witcher 2 is still an incredibly entertaining run, and easily the best fantasy RPG I've played so far this year.
Game Revolution (Jun 30, 2011)
Despite all the little flaws and caveats, The Witcher 2 is, ultimately, a fantastic game; any fan of darker, more consequentialist fiction will find themselves right at home. Nevertheless, those of you looking for something more upbeat, more uplifting – and frankly, less draining to play – will want to look elsewhere. The Witcher 2 is bittersweet.
Absolute Games ( (May 31, 2011)
PCActu (May 28, 2011)
Level 7 (May 27, 2011)
Brash Games (Jul 08, 2011)
Despite how incredibly annoyed at it I am, I can’t deny the Witcher 2 is really rather good. At its apex, this is one of the better RPGs of the last ten years – mastering complex mechanics, action packed combat, and some real character development in one fell swoop, something most games fail at so tremendously. And yet, I still can’t get past how incredibly annoyed I am at it. My most endearing memory won’t be the epic battles and intricate depths of the gameplay, but the sheer unbriddled annoyance of it all. Maybe I’m just not dedicated enough – there’s a tremendous wonder here, but it’s burried so deep under my bitter annoyance I’m just not sure I’m willing to dig it out.
When all is said and done, The Witcher 2 is an incredible game and I’m worried that my review does not do it justice. All of the technical problems, frustrating as they may be, are insignificant next to the overall quality of the game. It is not a diamond in the rough, it is instead an elegantly cut diamond that is in the final stages of being polished. Just a little more time is all it needs to become worthy of being inserted into the crown of gaming. If you love a good story, if you enjoy difficult choices and believable characters, if you want to see a gorgeous and challenging game that was really meant to be played on a PC, please do yourself a favor and buy this game. You will not be disappointed, I am certain of it.
Joystiq (May 31, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is polished for the most part and Polish throughout, though its unique origin is reflected more in the grounded fantasy than in the charming, brassy localization. There's no apocalypse in sight, only a well-written web of murdered monarchs, racial tension and freedom fighting -- with just a dash of magic. The Witcher 2 makes economical use of plot-altering decisions; the big ones count and the small ones often take you by surprise. As it turns out, the same holds true for monsters. I had to learn that the hard way in the absence of a decent tutorial, but with the exception of dragon slaying, some professions are clearly best suited for on-the-job training. When can you start?
Wired (May 25, 2011)
Witcher 2’s technical and design glitches didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the game. It’s one of the most realistic role-playing games I’ve ever tried — just like in real life, the decisions you make have wide-ranging effects, and you won’t learn what those are until much later. Witcher will truly make you consider your moral views. Not the easy ones, but the complex ones that define you as a person.
The Guardian (May 25, 2011)
Much like the combat, other aspects feel flawed but still definitely worth persevering with. As an RPG, Witcher 2 mixes old-school and daringly new ideas at will. Initial NPC conversations and quests seem formulaic, even bland, until you realise there may be profound consequences further down the line. Quests can be shocking, intriguing or deliberately obscure, often requiring further information or items without giving you any hint as to what these are. And speaking of items, there's a whole sub-level of crafting, upgrading and brewing that can be as simple or complicated as you want. And as for the storyline, which packs in so many carefully crafted twists and moral dilemmas, it deserves to be fully explored for yourself. The Witcher series is undoubtedly still on a journey in terms of playability, but for scale, depth and sheer class it already feels like Europe's answer to Final Fantasy — and that's been a long time coming.
Game Over Online (May 25, 2011)
I come away from this game with nothing but mixed feelings. Pretty much every aspect starts by exciting you, giving you hope that an RPG is finally going to be all the things you want it to be. But at every turn, it mocks you with "Just kidding!", ripping the rug out from under your feet and making you taste cold reality again. This back and forth relationship makes playing The Witcher 2 tiring. Everything is a battle against good intentions turned sour by fatal design flaws. It's one of those games that I don't regret having played, but I also wouldn't recommend it to a friend, either. And since that's exactly where the first game left me, I have little hope that the Witcher universe will ever be a place I feel at home.

Game Arena (May 31, 2011)
If you are an adult and looking for a decent RPG, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is well worth a look. Some of the design choices are incredibly confusing and you might not want to play it again for a couple of months, but it does an excellent job of bringing Geralt's world to life.
The Escapist (May 27, 2011)
The Witcher 2 continues the epic story of Geralt of Rivia begun by the short stories of Polish fantasist Andrzej Sapkowski and will be a highlight for many PC loyalists for years to come. I can't ignore CD Projekt's poor design choices and crippling interface, however. I will likely replay The Witcher 2 again and again as I wait for the inevitable threequel, but each time I do I will curse the chance the game had to deliver mechanics to match its glorious setting.
ActionTrip (May 25, 2011)
We expected a deep RPG experience and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings doesn't quite deliver on that front as much as its predecessor. I think the alteration of the combat system receives most of the blame for that. It's more arcadish, more physical and revolves around button-mashing and combos and quick-time events, rather than stats, strategy or tactics. If long dialogue sequences, beefed up graphics and action-oriented gameplay define an RPG, than the genre has changed. It's abundantly clear, folks, The Witcher 2 has gone the way of Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 2. Ya know, improved visuals, dumbed down gameplay, catering to RPG buffs least of all. Here's how I can sum up the gameplay; I think The Witcher 2 feels more like a new Gothic game. In short, frequent hack'n'slash style action puts less emphasis on tactics, character development or anything else that constitutes a really good role-playing game.
If you can look past the balancing, pacing and technical issues, there is an extremely solid RPG here - nothing especially innovative, but definitely a game that sets out to be the most absorbing, rich and spectacular experience it possibly can be. It’s a disappointment because it largely succeeds in that goal while fluffing the basics. The best RPG of the current generation? With a bit more care, it could have been.

Here is a game where you have to loot boxes of items right in front of vendors and they don’t care. A game where you’re obligated to hurry and catch a king’s assassin, yet you have the option to dally about and to do side quests, some of them extremely small in scale. The side quests at least were varied, though many of them were (surprise!) frustrating.
Edge (Jun 03, 2011)
Whether The Witcher 2 is worthwhile despite its dull first act depends on whether or not its central fantasy is one you can engage with. Rather than creating a character, you’re stuck as the brooding, white-haired monster slayer Geralt. Anyone who enjoyed the role last time will be happy to bear with him while the game meanders to its point. Anyone else will need an extraordinary level of patience.

True to form that makes The Witcher 2 itself incredibly difficult to recommend, even though we're sure some people are going to love it. Unpolished and uneven, despite the attempts at maturity The Witcher is still disappointingly under-developed.
Destructoid (May 23, 2011)
At times, Assassins of Kings is good. Great, even. For the most part though, it's just okay. It does the job and wastes some time, while providing no lasting impression or unforgettable experience. There are just far more fun and intensely more rewarding ways of wasting time.
Game Critics (Jul 07, 2011)
I really wanted this game to be better than it actually was. It has the kind of vision that should make it great, but it has far too many problems to overlook. The most frustrating thing is that I could forgive all of those flaws if the game had an engrossing story or rich world to show me, but it fails in that regard as well. The sophisticated ideas here are wasted on such a sloppy product. While it does indeed take a few steps in the right direction, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings doesn't live up to its own ambition.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (May 18, 2011)
The Witcher 2 is flawed in some ways, and a paragon in others. I cannot recommend everyone play it, because it simply won’t satisfy everyone in the same way, and will frustrate and off-put many with its bizarre little quirks of difficulty and moments of poor design. But I will recommend everyone buy it, because I want to play another one. And another one. And many more after that. Well done, CD Projekt, you’ve just brought the fantasy RPG back to life. It’s still twitching from the electricity, but it’s a beautiful thing.
