PC Play (Nov, 2000)
IGN (Sep 29, 2000)
If you like old-school RPGs, you'll fall in love with Wizards & Warriors. It has its share of problems, but they're only minor blemishes on an otherwise brilliant gem of a game. The folks at Heuristic Park have done an excellent job rekindling that classic RPG feeling, and I for one have been missing lots of sleep for this one.
PC Joker (Nov, 2000)
Bottom Line: While Wizards & Warriors may look somewhat dated, the core concepts that made this such an interesting game are fully intact. This is a huge game that can potentially take 200+ hours to complete, taking all of the little tasks and sub-quests into consideration. The interface has a fairly high learning curve, but can be mastered with some patience. Overall, this is a very good game that could have been better with more polish. It is still well worth playing for any true fantasy RPG fan.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Dec, 2000)
Gamer's Pulse (Oct 31, 2000)
Now I know I haven’t exactly said that Wizards & Warriors is a shining example of an RPG, but it does have its merits. Don’t let what I say stop you from buying something you might want to buy. It has fine aspects for Role-Players and new game enthusiasts alike. While I can’t say I was addicted to it, I can certainly see how another person could become totally immersed in the game and spend hour upon hour forgoing sleep while playing it. To sum up, it was a good game, and although it wasn’t a hit for me it may indeed be something you are looking for.

Gamezilla (Nov 25, 2000)
Wizards & Warriors suffers from delayed-game syndrome. The extra time it took to get it to market makes it look and feel outdated. It also suffers from technical problems with its 3D graphics support. Despite these issues it is a good game and I found myself enjoying it more than I expected as it progressed -- the good classic RPG core of the game manages to overcome the problems to a large extent. Die-hard fans of the genre will find plenty to enjoy in Wizards & Warriors, but for the more casual gamer it is likely to be disappointed.
78 (Nov 26, 2000)
Over all, this game is worth a look certainly, but if your budget is limited, you may want to aim your dollars at another target. Odds of hitting the bulls-eye will increase if you look at Baldur's Gate II or Icewind Dale.
In an Enchanted Medieval World, a Very Bad Guy has returned to wreak havoc. Only the legendary Super Artifact can defeat the evil one. Through many Dangerous Quests, the heroes will discover the Super Artifact and bring about the end of the Reign of Terror. No one said the storyline for Wizards & Warriors would be original; in fact, its lack of originality only adds to its charm. Hatched from the brain of famed Wizardry series designer D.W. Bradley, W&W does many things right and very few wrong.

Armchair Empire, The (Jan 01, 2000)
The Wizardry series has provided some amazingly addictive role-playing for PC gamers over the last 20 years, from its humble beginnings in the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, to latter editions like Heart of the Maelstrom and Wizardry Gold. Helping create the fifth, sixth, and seventh installments in the series was D.W. Bradley, and now he and his development team have recently completed Wizards & Warriors. While a very respectable title, it does suffer from a number of technical sore points that weaken the play experience.
GameZone (Oct 12, 2000)
Yes, Wizards & Warriors, from Activision, offers nothing new in the way of plot line. But wait until you see this program. It is a tale of two worlds – the one in town and the one on the road to adventure.
GameSpot (Oct 03, 2000)
Activision's Wizards & Warriors is a first-person 3D role-playing game designed by D.W. Bradley, who helped create the fifth, sixth, and seventh episodes of the classic Wizardry role-playing series. According to Bradley, Wizards & Warriors is intended to be something of a return to such involving, addictive first-person role-playing games, and in that regard, it succeeds for the most part. Like many role-playing games before it, Wizards & Warriors lets you create a party of adventurers of different character classes and races and explore vast overland areas and dank dungeons in search of fearsome monsters, powerful weapons and items, and experience levels. Unfortunately, Wizards & Warriors suffers from a handful of problems that compromise an otherwise solid game.
RPG fans looking for a change of pace from Baldur's Gate II and who are willing to overlook a few flaws may want to give Wizards & Warriors a chance.
Gry OnLine (Dec 28, 2000)
The sheer number of options and things you can do aside from the primary quest make this a game worth buying for people looking to get their money’s worth in terms of longevity; but more than that, Wizards & Warriors is designed to give players an alternate world into which they can flee when the rigors of mundane life become a severe burden. Despite the fact that the story seems like a typical save-the-world-from-the-evil-overlord epic, it is inspired and well-written enough to stay most complaints of unoriginality. But then with so much experience as a designer in the world of PC RPGs, we should expect no less from D.W. Bradley. The longevity of this title is nearly unmatched by any other RPG save the online crowd, and players from the old-school crowd of role-playing will feel immediately at home.
GameSpy (Oct 21, 2000)
The verdict? Two thumbs way down. None of my systems and operating systems ran this game well, and at least in Windows 2000, the OS couldn't be taken down along with it. The Heuristic Park Website acknowledges that it doesn't run well in Windows 2000, but even in Windows 98, there were a lot of problems, particularly with system lockups. The graphics left a lot to be desired, the interface was painful and the storyline pretty weak.
Just RPG (Aug 03, 2002)
This is such a difficult game to review. In a lot of ways, it's like passing a car accident. It's a terrible mess and you should just pass it up. I have heard that it probably won't get better soon because Activision is not letting the writers of the game patch it up. On the other hand, like the car accident, it draws us in and captivates us. There are some truly wonderful classic RPG moments here.
Although the last act of the game plays like a romp in a small lake, by the time you get that far, you’re willing to buy into the illusion of a high seas adventure. Unfortunately, the ultimate battle resorts to the underhanded trick of forcing you to fight according to new rules. But by the time it’s over, you’ll be so invested you’ll want to keep playing. “There’s no more?” you’ll ask. Three-second mandatory pause. There’s no more, but it was fun while it lasted. Here’s hoping D.W. Bradley’s next game has a better engine and smoother development. Because in the best and worst sense of the phrase, they just don’t make them like this anymore.
GameStar (Germany) (Oct, 2000)
Gamekult (Nov 15, 2000)
Basé sur un concept légèrement has been, Wizards & Warriors ravira les nostalgiques des premiers Might and Magic.
The rating of 3 GiN gems is more to warn the feint hearted. For those of us that do not mind dealing with a little clunky interface to get their kicks will find this game worth the effort to play. Like I said before, many other reviews have stated that those that stick it out for the long haul will be rewarded for their perseverance. I just do not want to give the impression that this is a game for everyone as it is not.
GamesFirst! (Oct 31, 2000)
hate to dismiss a game like Wizards and Warriors when its creators are so nice. On the first page of the manual, D.M. Bradley – of Wizardry fame – directly addresses the player and says that if his game, “provides even a momentary taste of being alive in a world far different from our own, then the goal of this creation has been accomplished.” A dedication page follows which asks the game be played in memory of several people all presumably close to Bradley. And while it is evident that a lot of work and love has gone into Wizards and Warriors . . . well, it just isn’t enough to elevate this lame offering.
Quandary (Nov, 2000)
Wizards & Warriors isn't perfect, but it's certainly an entertaining adventure. I've had lots of fun, especially puzzling my way through the dungeons. It's a game that's rich in detail but unfortunately some of the detail just didn't get enough attention. I wouldn't recommend it for novice players because of the complexity of the statistics, but for players who have been missing first-person quests, this one should fill the gap. I'm in line for Wizards & Warriors II although to 'come of age' I think the designers of this potential new series should sit back and think about their target audience.
Gameplanet (Nov 13, 2000)
RPG fans familiar with PC classics such as Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master will recognise the style of game play immediately. The view is FPS based with an on screen box showing your view (controlled by keyboard) with icons representing spells/weapons filling up the rest of the screen (controlled by mouse) Your role is to take a band of adventurers through forests, crypts, castles, dungeons and slay foul beasts. You get the picture.
Da Gameboyz (Jul 08, 2004)
Wizards & Warriors just doesn't compare to the other RPG heavyweights recently released. The graphics engine looks pretty crummy and allows for very little graphical ingenuity in level design and art. Probably the most aggravating part of Wizards & Warriors was the exploration, which should be full of excitement, tension, and fun, but is just plain dull. Although the creator, D.W. Bradley has been responsible for a fair portion of the Wizardry titles, it is unlikely there will be any more hell-spawned Wizards & Warriors titles hitting the shelves.
As an upgrade to the style of role-playing made popular in the long-running Might & Magic and Wizardry series, Wizards & Warriors clings to too many of the old ideas without doing enough justice to the new style of environments. Roaming about in 3D environments is nice, but kind of pointless due to the serious lack of detail. Plus, switching between magic, weapons, and special skills is simply too awkward when enemies come straight at you with their bows firing. I still might have enjoyed it, but the constant bugs were driving me crazy.
Absolute Games ( (Oct 03, 2000)
Electric Playground (May 08, 2004)
In the day and age of Baldur’s Gate I and II, Planescape: Torment, and Ultima Ascension, Wizards & Warriors is left feeling stale and looking bent with age. With such eagerly awaited titles as Neverwinter Nights and Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor on the horizon, the weary RPGer may very well pass up on this nostalgic sword and sorcery romp. I won’t deny and I certainly appreciate the warm feeling and soft spot that I have for what this game once represented, but the way has been paved for bigger, better, and newer games. Wizards & Warriors simply feels late by a few years.
Oh, Activision, why dost thou forsake us? This game can be summed up in two words – crap sandwich. Crude graphics and horrendous gameplay are only the beginning of W&W’s problems.
