Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a remarkable remake which never cuts corners. It’s the best remake ever produced. It’s (debatably) the best installment of the Ys Series ever produced. And it receives my absolute highest recommendation.
Ys: The Oath in Felghana is, in many ways, a purified action RPG. It takes the essentials, and executes on them extremely well. It's not a particularly long adventure; there are achievements to beat the game in under five hours and over ten, suggesting common completion times to be in between that, though it actually took me closer to 30 hours, since Steam does count my many deaths as game time. But it's also a tightly woven, action packed experience that just keeps on moving, with stellar boss battles, despite the occasional difficulty spikes. It does have some appropriateness issues to consider, and I don't want to minimize that. But that aside, if you have any appreciation for action RPGs, and want a good challenge, look no further than Ys: The Oath in Felghana. It's a rush from start to finish.

The game has multiple difficulty modes and definitely scores high on the replay factor. With excellent gameplay, an outstanding soundtrack and pleasing visuals, Ys: Oath in Felghana is a worthwhile gameplay experience. While easily cleared in less than 10 hours, it is a joyride from start to finish with no semblence of filler content and the perfect pacing. For those unwilling to go the import route, make your opinions heard and bug developers for a localization. This is a title that really deserves one!

Ys: The Oath in Felghana is a game that derives from the old fashion days of action RPGs. It’s straight to the point, no filler, and all action. The game offers a tremendous sense of triumph and reward, feelings that only come through games like these. At first, it might seem the bosses are just cheap gits, but step back, learn, and you’ll eventually defeat them and become so overjoyed that you won’t be able to stop cheering “YES!” and fist pumping the air. The Oath in Felghana isn’t particularly long, but, even with some of the hiccups that soil the game, it’s not enough to stop the fun ride at a great price.

Game Chronicles (Apr 02, 2012)
All in all, Ys: The Oath in Felghana is highly enjoyable, entertaining and one of the toughest rides in recent history. Its music is engaging during combat and adds to the fast paced action. The fun only gets better with the multiple difficulties and classic old school charm with a nice helping of new touches that makes it fit comfortably in today’s market. It’s a definite buy for all you RPG fans out there.

Generally, the game has a lot of replay value, but if it were to be played on a PC why, with the massive black border, does it have to look like just a port from a handheld?
PC Gamer (May 06, 2012)
Not having played the other Ys games, I’m not sure how it compares with those. On its own merits, it’s an okay hack-and-slash, but one that feels as old as it is – and nothing special when there’s the likes of Recettear and Fortune Summoners offering other flavours of action- JRPG in more interesting ways.
