To conclude then, Zoo Tycoon is a good 'all-rounder' which all the family should enjoy a good few hours playing. Kids that like animals will love the plethora of species available and parents will be pleased to see the level of detail in the educational text, which is cleverly essential in building a successful zoo. Not perfect, but very entertaining.

The overall feel of the original Zoo Tycoon is very much like the Roller Coaster Tycoon experience making it great for fans, especially animal lovers.

Schade eigentlich.

According to a recent study done by Microsoft, wildlife animals are smarter than previously anticipated. When such animals are placed in a cage, they use mathematical formulas to determine whether the cage they’re in suits them or not. There are also indications that they have some telepathic abilities or x-ray vision because they can determine what kind of soil is hidden under the concrete floor of their shelters! The result of this study can be found in Zoo Tycoon.

Game Over Online (Sep 30, 2002)
Just to answer a couple of questions that might have occurred to you when you clicked on the link for this review: yes, Zoo Tycoon came out almost a year ago, and no, I’m not reviewing a special re-release or gold version of the game. So why bother reviewing it at this late date? Well, the answer is equal parts because I was just interested in playing it and so figured I might as well review it, and because the game is notable enough in its genre (with a second expansion pack on the way) that we should have a review of it on this web site just to keep the web site complete. I’ll also be looking at both expansion packs in the upcoming days, so soon Game Over will be your one stop shop for Zoo Tycoon information.

Like any type of sim title, Zoo Tycoon is capable of sucking up the hours like so much dust into the vacuum cleaner. You get involved and if you’re like me, you begin to care--maybe too much--about the world you’re creating. A notice that Crocodile 7 is sick will send you racing over to the croc exhibit. You’ll spend far too much time trying to ensure that your hippos will breed. I was devastated when a computer freeze-up consumed one of my unsaved zoo projects. I had just installed an animal theatre to educate my patrons!

Having said all that, however, I do think the game is certainly worth a look -- perhaps especially in a month or so when they have some patches and new items available for download. Aside from the performance issues, most of the bugs are very easily fixable. Once they fix the problems, and I’m sure they will, the game will be a great diversion for kids and adults alike looking for a good, educational and more-or-less non-violent game. The technical problems also are equal to or, in many cases, far less than other sim games (some of which I never could get to run on some systems and OS’s) and the overall game design is definitely superior. This is the first zoo-related sim I’ve come across, and it’s about time. Here’s hoping they make the necessary improvements to make it a game really worth playing.

It's true that Zoo Tycoon doesn't offer the same kind of enjoyment that RollerCoaster Tycoon does--rather than building exciting and fantastic roller coasters to entertain your guests, you build relatively static exhibits of animals that you must feed and maintain. However, caring for a zoo full of your own miniature animals has its own charm, and despite its visual flaws and less-than-spectacular sound, Zoo Tycoon conveys this charm well.

Still. Zoo Tycoon is nicely clone overall— it’s the rare family game that doesn’t bore parents to death. And a good Website, with tree new scenarios and items, ensures that the game will have a long life. Let’s just hope the designers give us more of a wild kingdom next time around.

Aside from that, definitely a fun family game. A good game to introduce younger age groups to in order to get a handle on basic management issues and it has some mild education aspects as they'll learn to place animals in their native environments and look after them.

Who here hasn't walked around the zoo as a kid thinking it would be cool to design your own? Now these child dreams might come true. In Zoo Tycoon, you'll be challenged to build the most healthy and vibrant zoo possible.

Game Power Australia (Jul 13, 2002)
Zoo Tycoon is a game that parents will approve of for two reasons - it's non-violent (unless the tykes let a lion escape) and it's a game they'll want to play themselves. The educational aspect will also appeal. It certainly doesn't replace the immersion of the more traditional conflict-based RTS, but it's a good way for younger people to get stuck into an absorbing game. Zoo Tycoon's originality, overall execution and playability will no doubt appeal to many sim gamers.

IGN (Oct 17, 2001)
There were so many games that stuck a tycoon after their freaking names after Roller Coaster Tycoon and Railroad Tycoon did so well that it could make your head spin. Most of these titles were done by smaller developers and publishers however and many were actually packaged as bargain titles. So when Microsoft announced that they would be publishing a tycoon game of their own, we had hope as they probably wouldn't pick up "just another tycoon" game. So here we have Zoo Tycoon where you, much surprise here, are challenged to create and run a successful zoo in all aspects including keeping the animals happy and healthy as well as keeping the people happy. So if I have to do this in the game, isn't it reasonable to ask that they keep me happy and entertained?

GameSpy (Nov 08, 2001)
Neither casual nor hardcore gamers are likely to find much of real lasting interest in Blue Fang Games' Zoo Tycoon, though. Like many other "tycoon" games, Zoo Tycoon lets you become lord of your own little realm, building and managing a self-contained system. Zoo Tycoon's little realm is often dull, lacking spirit and excitement. The game can be mildly entertaining, but it doesn't put enough emphasis on creativity or strategy, and it quickly begins to feel more like boring work than engaging play.

ActionTrip (Dec 03, 2001)
Even though some 14 Tycoon titles appeared over the last year and a half, few of them managed to achieve any success (Rollercoaster Tycoon was definitely my favorite here). Basically, all these games let you create an autarchic mini-empire, where you, as a "tycoon-to-be", had to insure fun for the people who visit it. Microsoft decided to join the party and create the Zoo Tycoon, a rather specific simulation, in which you have to take care of the needs of your animals, as well as the needs of the visitors.

Eurogamer.net (UK) (Nov 29, 2001)
While initially charming, Zoo Tycoon finds it extremely hard to maintain your interest for more than a few hours, due to its unrelenting focus on micro-management and interface problems. It could well be a good Christmas diversion for your kids, but the average gamer expecting frantic Rollercoaster Tycoon-style management will be sorely disappointed.

In the end, Zoo Tycoon takes one of the most promising applications for computerized construction simulation and falls flat on its face. What could have been an offering that broke significant new ground in the construction simulation niche, with a colorful and entertaining subject matter, ends up taking the genre several steps backward. The joy many of us experience at real zoos is simply not reflected here. Due to severe problems in graphics and gameplay, this title cannot hold a candle to RollerCoaster Tycoon, still firmly at the head of the class. While short stints playing this release can indeed be enjoyable, for the long run you would do better looking for your fun with lions and tigers and bears in the real rather than the virtual world.
