Wrecking Crew is the unsung gem in the NES launch library. Other launch titles like Donkey Kong Jr. Math or Urban Champion felt dated (and awful) from the moment you played them, but Wrecking Crew remains addictive and enjoyable to this day. For my money, it’s one of the quintessential puzzle titles for the system alongside the Lolo series. The game would also be Mario and Luigi’s last blue-collar excursion for years. Mere months after Wrecking Crew, the brothers were promoted to the high-wage, high-risk position of “Princess Rescuers,” inherited the lofty “Super” moniker, and the gaming world was never the same again.
Wrecking Crew is very playable, has plenty of levels to keep you interested, good graphics 'n' sound and best of all Mario and Luigi...

Wrecking Crew’s gameplay is unique, and it has a nice bit of content to take advantage of that fact. While it’s never a great game, it’s usually a solid one. It’s not necessarily an easy game to learn without an instruction manual, but once you figure out how everything works, Wrecking Crew becomes something of a hidden gem. Don’t do what everyone else since 1985 has apparently done and ignore it. Give it a shot instead. You might be pleasantly surprised.

A very fun little game and it’s a shame it was overshadowed by bigger titles like Super Mario Bros. Hopefully now, it will receive the attention it deserves!
NESRetro Game Reviews (Jul 25, 2017)
Wrecking Crew is a unique game that manages to successfully blend action and puzzle elements into a fun, cohesive whole. It does get a bit repetitive after a while, but there's a ton of content here and the ability to choose any level, at any time, makes it a great game to return to.
WiiIGN (Nov 28, 2007)
Puzzle fans should take new notice of Wrecking Crew now, even if they've avoided it before by thinking it's more of an action title. And if they did, it's not surprising – this game hasn't been properly presented in the past. But if gamers who loved Tetris, Bejeweled, Dr. Mario and Puzzle Quest jump on board and give this one a fair amount of downloads, we might also be blessed with its sequel.
WiiGameSpot (Dec 03, 2007)
Mario, Nintendo's ubiquitous mascot, has appeared in dozens of games of differing nature since the company started developing video games decades ago. Best known as the portly plumber who battles turtles and androgynous egg-launching pink dinosaurs, Mario sets his plunger aside for a trusty hammer in the oddball NES title Wrecking Crew, now available for the Wii's Virtual Console. What starts off as an unremarkable game of destruction quickly proves to be an addictive puzzler that keeps you busy with tough but doable levels and a rudimentary level editor.
A simple game, this title has enough unique puzzle action to keep things interesting, at least for a short while. A programmable level edit mode is a diversion, but mostly useless due to the inability of the NES to save them for later play.
Wii UNintendo Life (Jun 24, 2013)
With so much competition out there, it's often hard to justify paying hard-earned cash for microscopic NES games of yesteryear. Nonetheless Wrecking Crew is an ambitious game, and even in the face of the occasional exhausting aggravation, this puzzle-platformer has a lot to offer. Although it paved the way for better projects to build on its foundation, Wrecking Crew still stands firmly cemented in Nintendo history.
WiiMag'64 (Mar 08, 2010)

The longevity is also marginally improved with a rudimentary level designer, which allows you to create and save four of your own creations for solo or two-player fun, a feature previously exclusive to the Japan-only NES Data Recorder. It's a decent time-waster, in a sort of sub-Dig Dug kind of way, though it mostly reminded me of the early Jon Ritman hit, Bear Bovver. I can think of more worthwhile ways to spend 500 points of pretend Nintendo money, but it ain't bad.
NESTilt (Dec, 1987)

Is It Worth The Money? Wrecking Crew was released over a year ago as one of the Nintendo Ambassador Program titles. Here it is filling up time between Mega Man sequels and Game Boy ports. For five dollars, Wrecking Crew is too repetitive to recommend. The bashing fun is short lived, despite a level creator that actually works. With shallow gameplay and ugly graphics, this NES launch game hasn't held up well.
