Saving progress

Virtual Console versions allow you to save custom level designs. The original Famicom version also allowed saving through the use of a peripheral called the Famicom Data Recorder, which recorded game data onto audiocassettes. Since this peripheral was never released elsewhere, no non-Japanese versions of the original game were capable of saving. However, the North American manual for the game mentions that the save and load functions "have been programmed in for potential product developments."
