X-Plane 10: Global Edition is a flight simulation program that runs on a variety of platforms such as MacOS X, Linux and Windows on desktop computers.
What makes the X-Plane 10 series different from X-Plane 9 is mainly: - Realistic Air traffic controller; an ATC that appears to be smart and responsive to what's actually happening. - Plausible world scenery - a world that looks as if it could exist; not necessarily as in real life though. - HDR lighting options and global shadow effects. - higher resolution cockpits and graphics. - Open Street Map geographical data. - Enhanced weather simulation. - 8 DVD-ROMs included. - Use of separate processor cores to drive the AI aircraft. - from release 10.20 onwards: added 64-bit version. - Initial 10.0 release did not include WED, the standard scenery editor known from previous versions.
X-Plane 10: Global Edition is the summit of development for over 20 years. Like its predecessors, it uses the blade element theory to determine the forces that act on the flying surfaces and responds immediately to the environment. The result is a very accurate response of the airplane. X-Plane can be flown offline and on-line flights are optional. The simulation offers an open environment where software and hardware add-ons can interact with the core simulator. Not only joysticks and rudder, but also real-life Garmin GPS unit, simulated avionics, flight instruments, and a myriad of paid and free aircraft and scenery packages are available from various publishers.
Included are single engine prop aircraft, twins, executive jets and airliners, to name a few categories. The "Global" in the game title refers to the fact that the included scenery covers the earth from approximately +60 and -60 degrees latitude. This covers almost all landmass. And lastly, X-Plane 10 includes an accurate navigational aid database plus over 20,000 airports which are independently updated by Robin Peel with input of volunteers worldwide. If airports and/or navaids are missing, one can easily add these oneself.
X-Plane has the potential to drive your home cockpit project, and this version makes it even easier. Simply adding extra monitors to increase the field of view, or use one X-Plane setup per monitor and link them using the network are possible. Commercial ventures use it as basis for their flight training - some versions are (FAA) certified training tools in which a pilot can tally flight hours. Both fixed wing and rotor craft operators have been using X-Plane as a training tool and / or development tool.
