Way Too Many Games (Mar 30, 2018)
Ubisoft’s new open world shooter is a true testament to the power of listening to fans and critical feedback, a vast improvement over Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal. While the game’s story isn’t exactly brilliant, the sheer amount of hell you can raise, coupled with the addictive arcade mode, are more than enough to guarantee a purchase. Murdering a bunch of lunatics in rural landscapes to the sound of lovely classic rock and country music hasn’t been that good since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas! Far Cry 5 is one of the best games of the year so far, without a doubt.

Despite some brief irritations and missed opportunities with its narrative, spending time in the world of Hope County remains absolutely delightful. Far Cry 5 boasts a wonderfully harmonious flow to its adventure, with its smart changes to exploration, discovery, and progression distinctly bolstering the enjoyment of creatively engaging and experimenting with its spectacular open world.

The formula for Far Cry 5 is very familiar by now, but that doesn't stop the game from being a fun experience. After a brilliant introduction, the beautiful world of Hope County can be explored at your own discretion, with progress firmly led by the player rather than what the game wishes you to do. The encounters with the Seed family are memorable, although the motives of the remaining cult members are questionable and their encounters too frequent. Not only are there plenty of ways to take down the cult, there are also a variety of side activities that add the usual streak of Far Cry humour to the game and will keep players occupied for hours. While co-op is appreciated, it feels tacked on and the multiplayer modes are little more than a distraction, even if the map editor is one of the most comprehensive seen for a while. Despite this, Far Cry 5 is the best addition to the franchise for quite a while and it is well worth spending many hours visiting Montana.

So Far Cry 5 isn't perfect, but it doesn't matter. While you're not likely to remember its story in a few months' time, and the erratic driving of friendly civilians may frequently alarm you, its gameplay shines and that's what's important. Setting you free in a stunningly realised open world, Far Cry 5 gives you all the tools you need for tens of hours of outrageous fun. Factor in online co-op and the user-generated content of Far Cry 5 Arcade, and you have one hell of a compelling package.

IGN (Mar 27, 2018)
Far Cry 5 is another wide-open playground with all the necessary ingredients for causing a real ruckus: loads of enemies and allies, temperamental wildlife, and plenty of explosions. Amidst all the insanity it manages to tell a serious story with respectable characters and a powerful ending, though it’s not the most memorable in the series. The successful transition from exotic locales to America’s backyard makes me excited to see where the Far Cry formula goes next.

Far Cry 5's story is a real let-down, but the action still makes for a solid co-op experience.

In its current state I cannot recommend paying full price for this, as the fun quickly wears off as it’s eaten alive by the many glitches and bugs that are present. I would recommend revisiting one of the many other titles in the series and waiting for Far Cry 5 to be patched and found in the bargain bin.
