Spazio Games (Jun 30, 2017)

Great fun in the short term, Micro Machines World Series just doesn't have the legs to be something you'll return to again and again. The nostalgic pull might be strong, but unless you have friends prepared to regularly play it with you, it's unlikely you'll get swept up in Micro Machines World Series for more than a few hours.

Codemasters, you won’t make the next big eSport game just because you’re trying to force one down our throats. A game becomes a big eSport title by being fun to play even when competitively, above all. Sadly, that’s not the case for World Series. It’s still somewhat worth playing if you’re looking for local multiplayer action, but it fails miserably everywhere else.

World Series has tons of potential. It controls well, has some really great ideas, and even has an addicting formula that would keep players coming back for more. The issue is that this game lives and breathes by the player based and right out the gate, there’s no one to play with forcing players to then play with the AI which is just not fun at all. I would suggest this game only to people that have a group of friends that are all on board in getting it to play with. Until then, I’d wait for a significant price drop and even then, just know that when you do get it, you will more than likely be playing by yourself.

Micro Machines once meant something to many people. In fact, today it still does carry a nostalgic allure for many who have been playing this series since it first hit consoles way back in 1991. This title carries the name of the famed toy and video game property, but it offers surprisingly little of what makes that name memorable. It abandons its legacy in crucial ways as part of a gamble to stake its claim as a worthwhile competitive multiplayer experience, but it misses that mark so greatly that there's nowhere left for players to seek consolation. If you're interested in preserving the shiny aura that surrounds the brand name, don't play Micro Machines World Series.

You can't just release a racing game at this price point with no campaign, no real incentive to keep playing, and so many unenjoyable game types. World Series feels like a free to play game that the developers decided to charge $30 for. From a developer like Codemasters that is renowned for its racing games, World Series is an obvious misfire and destined to be forgotten.
