Sunset Overdrive may be a bit cookie-cutter in places but it still manages to find ways to make the mundane insane. After a couple shaky games, Insomniac Games has come back to home territory with this crazy lighthearted romp. If you are looking for a good laugh and a great time on your Xbox One, you can’t do any better than Sunset.

If you want a great blast, superb exclusive and a tongue-in-cheek story that stars your own custom character (that can be updated via a variety of unlockable props and costume parts) look no further than Sunset Overdrive - if you want to see lots of grey/brown/macho-men yelling FIRE IN THE HOLE then you'd probably be better off with a dozen or so Generico MachoMan Shooters.

Insomniac Games did a spectacular job of making a fun, humor laden, gun-absorbed action platformer. From the creators of Ratchet & Clank, it's not a surprise. They have a formula and it works. It has been too long since I have played a game with such a tight control scheme and a focus on pure pandemonium. The frantic gameplay coupled with the likable character archetypes already makes it a solid contender for Microsoft GOTY. Now add a solid assortment of enemies, a somewhat engaging story, and so many guns that it would make Call of Duty blush and you've got a game worth buying.

Sunset Overdrive is a blast to play; it looks great, it feels great, it pushes the limits of both the player and the console without straining either. It's why games were games in the first place, and is the best reason to date to upgrade to an Xbox One. It may not be much more than a wacky, immature and explosive adventure that tries too hard to poke fun at itself and dazzle its players with gimmicks, but Sunset Overdrive has it where it counts. It's plain and simple while over-the-top ridiculous, charming while offensive, exceptional while exceptionally tacky, in short, it knows what it is. Sunset Overdrive is fun.
IGN (Oct 27, 2014)
Sunset Overdrive is big, gorgeous, and a hell of a lot of fun. Never has getting from point A to point B in an open-world game provided so much enjoyment. It provides some of the most fun, frantic, and fantastic gaming I've had on the Xbox One. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to once-again adorn my wolf mask, leap off the highest ledge I can find, and fire an explosive stuffed animal at that group of angry robots.
Digital Chumps (Oct 27, 2014)
The creative energy fueling Sunset Overdrive is an agent of change for a genre in creative decline. Its jubilant deluge of light and color, meaningful revisions to control and combat, and the sweeping diversity of skill-based missions push the open-world paradigm harder and faster than any of its peers. With Sunset Overdrive, freely accessible content isn't a passive and plodding support structure, but rather a demanding and attractive call for constant engagement.

Endlich wieder richtig schöne durchgeknallte Arcade-Action abseits kleiner Indie-Titel!

If you liked even one of the games I mentioned above, check out Sunset Overdrive. It’s definitely one of the more intriguing Xbox One exclusives to date, and worth playing for anyone that owns the system and enjoys the genre.
Giant Bomb (Oct 31, 2014)
This is an great debut for Insomniac on a new console, and it's great to see the developer of Ratchet & Clank getting back to a lot of colorful nonsense after focusing on Fuse and Resistance for so long. There's some room for growth in a few spots if this turns into a franchise, as it probably will, but this first effort is already a good solid reason to own an Xbox One, and one of the stronger open-world games released this year.
GameSpot (Oct 27, 2014)
Insomniac Games has crafted an excellent game in Sunset Overdrive. It's not without a few niggling issues, but you'll be too busy enjoying yourself to care. You can compare it to games like Crackdown, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ratchet and Clank, but by combining the best elements of those games into a single package and injecting it with an anything goes, rock and roll attitude, you'll never think of it as anything but a singular achievement that stands tall on its own merits. It's one of the best games on the Xbox One, and a refreshing shot of merriment.
Trusted Reviews (Oct 27, 2014)
It might not be the year’s most ground-breaking or innovative action game, but Sunset Overdrive is one of the most entertaining. Its mix of grinding and gunplay works beautifully, and the amps and the ridiculous weaponry ensure that slaughtering hordes of slavering mutants never gets old. It’s a little too scrappy and repetitive to be a classic, but who cares? Grab your biggest gun and let the good times roll.
There are few games like Sunset Overdrive. It’s a comical, highly diverse shooter that has a strong focus on being fun rather than realistic. While the fetch quests are overly aggressive and the music will occasionally cut out at the oddest of times, there’s still a lot here to love. A well-written script chock-full of fourth wall breaking references, some of the best traversal mechanics available, colorful visuals and a dense world to explore, players will be immersed in this awesome-apocalypse. It’s a shame the campaign doesn’t support full cooperative play, though, as it feels like it could have excelled with it, but the multiplayer component ensures for a decent substitution. All in all, Sunset Overdrive is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant, overpopulated marketplace of gritty shooters.

Impulse Gamer (Oct 29, 2014)
Sunset Overdrive wants to be liked and it wants to be different. Badly. The fact that it manages to pull this off in spite of more than a few annoyances is an achievement in itself. At the end of the day, it is a hell of a lot of fun to navigate the city and blast enemies, the customization is enjoyable to mess around with and even some of the attempts at humour land (The re-spawn animations in particular). The shortcomings are there however, and it prevents Sunset Overdrive from being the game it so desperately wants to be seen as.
The Games Cabin (Oct 28, 2014)
Graphically pleasing and highly enjoyable, a must-buy for those looking for an open-world experience akin to Crackdown/Jet Set Radio with the humour and madness of Dead Rising and Saints Row.

In among the density and neediness however there's a good game. One that's shamelessly focused on the fun of pinging around a city with an arsenal of ricocheting insanity guns, and so intent on being entertaining that it's endearing even when it doesn't work. There are fantastic moments where everything aligns perfectly, and even when it falls flat through over-effort the basic action is still a rewarding and noisy mess.
GamerGen (Oct 27, 2014)
Diehard GameFan (Nov 07, 2014)
As it stands, Sunset Overdrive is a worthwhile addition to the Xbox One library and a good sign of things to come from both the console and Insomniac.
