Xbox owners holding their breath for EA’s soccer series to grace their machine can finally exhale. 2002 FIFA World Cup sports all the improved controls and visuals of previous versions on other systems, giving the Microsoft console the well-rounded football simulation it’s been waiting for.

This is a good soccer program, featuring excellent animation and sound and solid game play. If there is a drawback it would be the lack of gaming options. However, fans of the sport will doubtless enjoy this outing.

With its few shortcomings, 2002 FIFA World Cup is an excellent portrayal of a game that is loved around the world. However, it should be noted, that while this game is the only official licensed game of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, all of you soccer nuts really have no need to get this on if your gaming library already has EA Sports' FIFA Soccer 2002 in it. This game has fewer options than the previous effort. It's mainly a soccer title that was created to highlight EA Sports' acquisition of the World Cup license.

As the first soccer game on the Xbox, I have to say 2002 FIFA World Cup is easily the most fun to play. The fact that soccer translates to videogames so well and EA's attention to detail when it comes to gameplay kept me and all of the other soccer fans around the office engrossed for weeks. That's saying something considering all of the different games that come through here.
All in all, a very good soccer game. As I have said before, the past few years of FIFA have been filled with lackluster games that really don't make you feel as if you are playing the beautiful game. Finally, EA has made a return to good soccer games. And what better to do it with than the Official World Cup game. Buy it!

Anyone looking for an Xbox soccer game that plays well and looks nice would do well not to pass on 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Unfortunately, EA Sports has pulled a fast one on us all by releasing a second soccer game instead of just including the World Cup mode on the original FIFA 2002. Because of this, you'll have to choose if you want the ability to play season mode (FIFA 2002) or the chance to win the Cup (2002 FIFA World Cup). Choose wisely, as maybe EA Sports will find the one-game solution for next year's soccer.

It's hard not to take a negative tone with this game, and I'm sure by now the conclusion (and pun) must be obvious, but I'll say it anyway: EA has dropped the ball with its latest release. Let's hope this poor showing doesn't return the series to its position of outright inferiority. Lacking the depth of its major rival, saturated with problems and bloated with unnecessary detail which actually works against the developer, this FIFA is a blotch in the copybook of an otherwise competent arcade football series. Not even sterling presentation and John Motson can rescue the party, and ultimately this deeply average incarnation of FIFA may not sell as well next time unless something is done to rectify the situation.
