Gaming Target (Jan 15, 2002)
Blood Wake is one of those few games that will keep you entertained for months to come. The tough missions will take you awhile to complete, and you will still have two difficulty levels left if you want to unlock all the extra modes and boats. Additionally, the multiplayer adds to the replay value exponentially. There is nothing like a four-player rumble through the waters.

Ever since VR Sports Powerboat Racing and Rapid Racer got released for play on the Playstation I eagerly awaited the launch of a new boat racing game. And I got spoiled again. Not only Does Blood Wake combines Water and Speed, but also trail-blazing action.
GameZone (Jan 28, 2002)
Blood Wake is the first great Xbox game of the year. Microsoft may have won the battle against Nintendo last fall, but that doesn't mean they're going to relax for a while. After six years of battle, Sony finally has a worthy adversary. Of all the games released this month, I've enjoyed Blood Wake the most. The bad press this game received is extremely unfair, especially when there are plenty of lesser-quality games out there scoring 9's and 10's from many publications.
IGN (Jan 03, 2002)
In the long run, what might hurt Blood Wake is its simple gameplay. Blood Wake boasts a good number of missions (20 plus) but there's not a whole lot of variety for each mission and the action can get a bit repetitive at times. This fact isn't helped that you don't receive weapons while fighting and the inability to customize your ships with different weapons.

I enjoyed this title immensely. Since I have so many games AND a life, I don't typically get to play a game through to its conclusion, however, this one I will. I can forgive its graphical shortcomings and the difficulty factor if only to see what kind of wacky-ass mission is going to come next. Our ratings system states that any game in the 80's should be fun right out of the box despite its shortcomings. This one is exactly that—easy to pick up, but hard to beat.

To conclude then, Blood Wake is a fun, if ultimately shallow game, improved by the plot and the game’s unique style, but still quite short-lived unless you’re really into this sort of thing. Certainly it’s pretty, and the multiplayer adds a little more playing time, but the gameplay is pretty much the same throughout, if increasingly hard.
GameSpot (Jan 09, 2002)
Those looking for Bloodwake to be the Xbox equivalent of Twisted Metal: Black--the current king of this particular subgenre--will be disappointed, but only until they come to realize that it's its own unique vehicular combat game, one that presents you with challenging missions instead of a series of free-for-alls. Though not without drawbacks, Bloodwake is an entertaining game that could be a good start to a new series.

GameSpy (Jan 11, 2002)
Although there are better vehicular combat games and better water sport games, there's nothing that combines the two. Unfortunately, Blood Wake is like an interesting tech demo with a sometimes tedious and frustrating game built around it.
The Video Game Critic (Jan 08, 2002)
While the action is always silky smooth, slowdown does occur, especially if your ship goes airborne. The controls could have been better designed. Using the left "steering" joystick to thrust and reverse is awkward, and you often shift into reverse when trying to make a tight turn. Still, Blood Wake is quite satisfying overall, and fans of vehicular combat games will certainly approve.
Game Revolution (Jan 01, 2002)
Blood Wake turns out to be a nice looking game with familiar gameplay that will keep you entertained long enough. There's nothing in these seas that will blow you out of the water, but it does what it does well.
Blood Wake isn't a bad game by any means. The trouble is, most missions will have to be played at least a couple of times because of the high difficulty, even on the easy setting. In all fairness though once you get into the game it is does grip you and a positive side of the difficulty is that you won't finish the game any time soon.
X-Power (Aug 21, 2002)
MS Xbox World (Oct 22, 2002)
Blood Wake is a great game to play if you’re playing solo or with friends, but doesn’t have the extreme depth of missions and otherwise that you might be looking for. With the impressive visuals and the minimal audio, there is a type of blend that places more of the emphasis on looks than the audio effects. Control is something that is easy enough to work with while keeping in mind the complexity of working with to separate sticks and the game play is challenging while deceptively linear throughout. If you’re into run and gun action on the high seas, then this game is for you, but if you’re looking for depth in the missions, and fair challenge, then keep shopping and leave this one for a weekend rental!
Game Critics (Mar 06, 2002)
Blood Wake is not a game that will engage gamers wits or captivate them with its story. It is a simple, easy to play, easy to enjoy arcade-style game that holds up well for a short time but, unfortunately, crumbles under the simplicity of its design. Its great for what it is, but what it is prevents it from being truly outstanding.

MS Xbox World (Aug 13, 2002)
Blood Wake is a good attempt at a boat shoot ‘em up, there’s little to play through the whole game but it is challenging and fun for the time that it will take you to complete it.
Whether it’s the horrible water and effects of the past, or the amazingly realistic waves of Blood Wake, the gameplay always bogs down in it. Driving the boats full-throttle is always an entertaining experience, but the combat is one-dimensional. Make a strafing pass…make a slow painful turn…blast away…repeat.

Bloodwake is an excellent game to show off the Xbox’s graphical power, with some of the best water effects pre-pixel shading. Sadly though, once you get past the impressive effects you are left with a fairly lacklustre game, with poor music and a dull solo game, with very little in the multiplayer arena to tempt. This isn’t to say Bloodwake is an awful game, it’s just a showcase title designed to flaunt the power of Xbox, but beneath the surface it’s really nothing special.
Blood Wake wasn’t totally devoid of fun, but drawbacks like these make the game transparent in what it attempts to do. I’m all for mindlessly blowing things up, but after tooling around for a while, I was more interested in turning the guns on myself instead. The only Blood Wake here is the trail of red stool this game leaves behind.
MS Xbox World (Mar 05, 2002)
The Xbox is my favourite system, and when a game comes out, I rush to the store and pick it up. With every new purchase, I hope that the game I have purchased will be testament to the power of the XBox as a console gaming machine. Reviewing an XBox game in a negative light is something I would prefer not to do, but in this case it is unavoidable. I only hope that when you look at the blood wake demo disc, you can realize that there is nothing more than what you see in the demo. That is it, and that is all. Blood Wake is completely un-recommended, and your money could be spent much better elsewhere.
GamePro (US) (Jan 07, 2002)
Blood Wake takes the Twisted Metal formula of vehicular combat, then throws it in the tub to see if it floats. It does but barely. This is one of those look at what we can do with water physics games, and in that regard, it’s cool but the standard mission-based gameplay isn’t nearly as deep as the ocean it takes place on. Heavily armored catamarans and speedboats control fine, and the physics model is realistic. And yes, the water’s pretty. However, Blood Wake’s gameplay isn’t compelling or original enough to make it worth a purchase unless you’re looking for a four-player boat combat experience. Charter this vessel for a weekend, but don’t buy it without testing her seaworthiness yourself.
