Call of Duty 3 on current-generation is an amazing port of the Xbox 360 game. Treyarch put in a lot of work to make this one of the most technically impressive games on both the Xbox and PlayStation 2. The Xbox 360 version still has larger levels, more characters onscreen, and significantly better graphics but the current-generation versions are no slouch. This is a markedly better game than Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and the finest World War II gameplay on the current-generation consoles.
Game Chronicles (Nov 08, 2006)
The best thing I can say about Call of Duty 3 is that after playing I actually felt like I had been through a war. There were moments when I would catch myself physically ducking or leaning my body as I tried to look around a corner. I started to appreciate the men in my unit and a sense of loss when somebody was lost. Signing up and going off to war might not be for everybody, but playing this game will certainly make you respect those who did and those who still do.

As it stands today, though, Call of Duty 3 represents the state-of-the-art in Cinematic war simulations. If you don’t have the lucre to move up to an Xbox 360, you will be able to add another years life to your legacy Xbox with CoD3 while not giving up all that much in the game experience. Much like HDTV, however, you would find it very difficult to move back down to the lower resolution alternative. With that caveat, I believe Call of Duty 3 belongs on every Xbox owner’s wish list for the imminent holiday season.

While not as breathtaking as the next-generation version of the game, Call of Duty 3 for the original Xbox will still not fail to impress with its great visuals, intense action and great multiplayer mode. While World War II shooters are a dime a dozen these days, this third entry in the Call of Duty series for the Xbox is an entertaining ride well worth taking.

When we received the Xbox version of COD3 we were told that it is “content identical” to the 360 build of the game which we reviewed here. Having just witnessed the spectacle of a great looking second generation 360 game, we were suspicious of the claim. However Treyarch has managed to keep the two versions of the game surprisingly close. This is a great example of just how far the Xbox is being pushed in the twilight of its life cycle.

You've survived D-Day, so it's time to liberate Paris and slaughter more Nazis. Gut-churningly realistic WW2 action.

From landing to conquering, the COD3 experience is a great one, and we’d suggest any fan of the series or even of the genre to check it out. The visuals are very well done and the sound is simply incredible, especially with the score it has. The gameplay hasn’t changed much and may get dry for those who are hardcore followers to the series, but veteran mode will be a sure bet to blow blood-vessels for any player. The additions to the multiplayer scene add replay value but you may want to borrow or rent a copy first to see if you have any connection problems. If you have the option, then either the Xbox 360 or the PS3 editions should be your first choice. Nevertheless, COD3 is a keeper and definitely worth a look in any form.
The previous games were just as guilty of being "rail shooters" as Call of Duty 3 but they managed to successfully throw everything plus the kitchen sink at you to hide that truth. This one tries that same approach but instead comes off as little more than a "me too" clone and this series deserves far better than that. Here’s hoping that Infinity Ward’s eventual return to the saga won’t leave gamers with such a bland and lifeless taste in their mouths.

Take one part classic Call of Duty scripted FPS action, add in two parts improved level design, another one part updated graphics, and just about four parts upgraded multiplayer and you’ve got the ultimate Call of Duty stew. It’s cooked, ready to serve, and should definitely be on your shopping list.
