Codemasters has finally nailed it. Always a master technician when it comes to physics engines and simulation, the English company once known for its Game Genie has created a Colin McRae to be proud of in this generation. Not that Colin McRae Rally 3 or Colin McRae Rally 4 were bad, they weren't, but they were disappointing.

If you are already a McRae fan then – you know what to do. If you love rally games but are new to Colin McRae Rally, then getting 2005 should become one of your main goals in life. This series truly is a labour of love and every new installment takes the experience to a dizzy new height. Buy this game!

The cars are without a doubt the stars, never mind GT4, PGR2, Rallisport Challenge 2, Toca Race Driver 2, Forza, we've seen and played them all, and you won’t see more detailed cars this generation. Despite not being the “all new” game we might have hoped for (it was developed in 9 months for goodness’ sake), having a few niggles, and a few new rivals appearing, the question you have to ask yourself is: is there a better rally game around than Colin McRae Rally 2005? – and the firm answer is: nope.

The changes to Career mode will make it worth a purchase, even if you bought last year's edition. However, more needs to be done in next year's edition to keep the series not only one of the best in the genre, but also worth purchasing for long-term fans. For now, Colin McRae Rally 2005 is an essential purchase for rally fans.
GamePro (US) (Sep 30, 2004)
Despite his turbulent ride over the years in real life, Colin McRae has consistently delivered a solid racing experience on the virtual racetrack. This year?s no exception, and although much of the game can feel like past McRae?s, the new career mode keeps The Flying Scotsman fresh for this latest race.
GameSpot (Oct 04, 2004)
Colin McRae makes his second Xbox appearance in 2004, and while the core game hasn't changed much, there are enough extras to keep most racers happy. Without the Colin McRae Rally series, rally racing would be virtually unknown in the United States. Well, technically, this extreme version of motorsport is simply ignored by the vast majority of American racing fans. Nonetheless, the Colin McRae series has managed to find a niche in the American gaming market with a consistent string of quality games that satisfy off-road racing fans and gearhead tweakers alike. Colin McRae Rally 4, released a scant seven months ago here in North America, was notable for its improved graphics, nominal online features, and, possibly best of all, budget price.
XBox Front (Jan 20, 2005)

MS Xbox World (Oct 06, 2004)
CMR 2005 may not be as visually impressive as the Rallisport titles but it does deliver in terms of gameplay the most playable and fun authentic rally experience of any of the available rally titles. It may not be the most realistic or the most visually impressive but it sits perfectly fine tuned and balanced in between both Rallisport’s (visuals) and Richard Burns (ridiculously realistic) as the most complete playable fun rally experience currently available. The addition of Xbox LIVE on-line multiplayer is just one thing in a list that truly makes CMR2005 a worthy purchase.
Still, while I love the series more each year, I also feel that this entry doesn't offer a big enough incentive to buy it if you already own '04.
While I was hoping that this installment would give more meat to the career mode (and there are some changes here, along with a more fleshed-out Xbox Live experience), once I got the whiff of dirt and exhaust, I left my worries about the game in the dust. For the long term, I think the series needs to take a year off and concentrate on this mode, but for now, Colin once again manages to strap you in tight and take you to the edge in back in one thrilling ride.
Game Reality (Oct 23, 2004)
Codemastersin Colin McRae Rally pelisarjasta on muodostumassa vuosittainen ilmestys. Vähäiset uudistukset edeltäjään verrattuna laskevat viidennen kolinin ralliarvoa ja pudottavat siltä pois "Editor's Choice" palkinnon, mutta kaikesta huolimatta Colin McRae Rally 2005 on kelpo rallipeli, varsinkin niille jotka eivät edellistä Colin McRae rallia hankkineet.
X-Power (Sep 28, 2004)

Thunderbolt Games (Sep 24, 2004)
The Colin McRae series is at a T-junction in its life. Codemasters' can turn left and continue on the uncertain path of incremental updates in the style of EA Sports, collecting regular revenue but saturating their own niche genre with similar games, risking losing sales in the process. After all, once you've got 2005, why would you buy 2006 if it's going to be only a little different? Turing right will lead to following Neversoft's example with the Tony Hawk series; reinvigorating the game concept with some fresh ideas. If you don't adapt to people's needs and keep up with the competition, then they'll go somewhere else - it's already happening with FIFA and PES. It would be a real shame to see Colin McRae lose its edge and become the victim of its own success, so let's just hope that Codemasters do the sensible thing and chooses the right path.
Colin McRae Rally 2005 is a solid but not spectacular addition to the series that should please most fans. However the graphics aren't as good as in TOCA Race Driver 2 or RalliSport Challenge 2 which is disappointing.

It must be incredibly tough to churn out a new version of a game in a year and make it sufficiently alluring. After all, people spent 40 quid just 12 months ago - the developer has to find a way to encourage them to get their wallets out again. And not only is it tough, but it's incredibly perilous as you pile your resources into meeting a deadline, at the risk of ending up with a game so similar to the one you started out with that the fans start to lose patience. Such is the problem that Codemasters faces with one of its key brands.
GameSpy (Oct 14, 2004)
For more than five years, Codemasters has been teaming up with Colin McRae to bring the world of off-road racing to gamers. Each game in the series has always managed to faithfully capture the look and feel of cruising down dirt paths and loose gravel in a chase for the championship title. For Colin McRae Rally 2005, Codemasters pulled out all the stops and has come up with its most impressive game yet.
