FIFA 2005 is without a doubt the greatest soccer game EA has made. It features everything you could possibly want and more. First Touch system, Online Play, extensive Career mode, so many leagues and players, great visuals, and top-notch audio. Those of you who were disappointed by previous FIFA games shouldn’t hesitate to try this one out. If you are looking for a good soccer game that will keep you entertained for a long time, or at least until Halo 2 comes out, then FIFA 2005 is number one in its class.

With the success and critical acclaim of FIFA Soccer 2004, EA Sports has proven that the beloved sport has a fan base that appreciates a soccer game that not only plays excellently but also features all the goodies that make this such a cool sport. As a soccer fan, I felt that EA Sports not only captured the sport well enough but, judging by FIFA Soccer 2005, it wanted to take things one step further. Is this a step in the right direction, though?

Focusing on fixing gameplay, EA Sports has made the best playing FIFA ever. The fight for supremacy between EA Sports and Konami's soccer franchises is starting up once again, and FIFA 2005 has kicked it off in what will potentially be the closest match up yet.
GameSpot (Oct 19, 2004)
This is EA Sports' best soccer game to date on the pitch, but it's really unfortunate that the career mode isn't more user-friendly. In the world of soccer games there are really only two serious contenders for the championship title at this point: Konami's Winning Eleven games (Pro Evolution Soccer in Europe), and EA Sports' FIFA Soccer series. Like rival soccer teams eager to show off their newly acquired players at the start of a new season, these two series show up with a host of new features every 12 months in the hope that they'll finally score a convincing victory over the other.

FIFA 2005 is a topgame and up to now the best in the series so it will depend most on your personal preference whether you'll like this one more than PES which probably scores even a little better when it comes to realism. The FIFA episode is what it needs to be: an evolution of the previous with more focus on realism and gameplay without loosing the traditional strengths of the series. Of course there are always things that can be improved but in the end each footie-lover and arcade sports gamer will have hours of fun with this one.

The challenge for every sports game, especially from EA, is to introduce enough newness year after year to make said sports game worth the purchase. There was a time when simply getting the new roster update was enough. The arrival of FIFA Soccer 2005 on PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube ends up being a bit of redemption for the franchise that had slipped a bit last time we saw it.

I was also disappointed at the lack of tutorials to full you in on new controls, since the franchise seems compelled to change what buttons does every year. Even so, FIFA 2005 is a great play, and comes highly recommended from this soccer fan.

But in harsh, critical terms, while it's a game that we'll be playing a lot in the weeks and months to come thanks to Live, the bigger picture is that we're talking about another product featuring very minor tweaks. EA may have the best seller by a mile, but it's still not setting the agenda for gameplay and raising the standard to unassailable heights. You'll be happy with it, but there are so many areas that could be improved that some will rightfully balk at shelling out for it at full price - unless you're online of course, in which case it's definitely worth the money, PESphillia notwithstanding...

GameSpy (Oct 20, 2004)
Although some people will probably insist that the Winning Eleven series is still top dog in the soccer genre, there's no denying that EA is starting to get serious about taking back some of its lost fans. The addition of the First Touch system makes the gameplay much more fluid, and it encourages you to improvise more often. Armchair managers will love the new career mode, one of the best you'll see this year. It might not be the perfect soccer game, but FIFA Soccer 2005 is a huge step in the right direction for this once groundbreaking series.
Don't get me wrong - this FIFA is as good, if not slightly better than all the other FIFAs before it. And as long as this is all anyone asks for, it looks like FIFA will crawl along from year to year knowing that it never has to fully pull it all together.
Games TM (Oct 07, 2004)
As ever, the presentation and options give FIFA any kind of edge over Pro Evolution Soccer. The commentary is of a much higher standard and replays, on-screen score displays and player likenesses all effortlessly ease you into the action. It's a shame the action couldn't be more like football too. Its online gameplay would have saved it - but recent news from EGN has revealed that Pro Evolution Soccer 3 is going to be playable online over Xbox Live and, to be honest, that's where our money and much of our time is going.
