The breadth of options in Gladius cannot be praised enough, but even more impressive are the unique combat mechanics. Every move utilizes a swing meter like those often found in golf games. The goal is to let the meter climb and hit the button as it reaches the sweet spot. Hit the button too early and you won’t do much damage; hit it too late and you’ll overextend your swing. It might sound complicated, but it actually works extremely smoothly. You can turn the meter off in the options menu and let the computer decided combat for you, but to do so would be to remove much of what makes this game truly great.

With its epic storylines, hundreds of combat scenarios, and open-ended structure, Gladius is one of the deepest games of the year. If you play strategy/RPGs because you're an anime fan, Gladius will bore you; if you play them because they're fun, Gladius will obsess you.

Before all the sugar completely eats away at your tooth enamel, let me point out, that despite all it's strengths as a strategy game, Gladius remains a very niche, subjective gaming choice; if you don't like strategy, it's appeal will be very limited, and with the highly demanding learning curve that it throws at you, it's presence on your shelf may indeed be very short-lived. If you do like what it's all about, however, that same shelf of yours may never see a more welcome and permanent visitor.
Game Over Online (Dec 18, 2003)
If you’re looking for a game with a ton of depth, replayability and a solid storyline, look no further. Gladius is stockpiled with a ton of features that will appease everyone from the beginning adventurer to the hardcore strategist. Along with an easy to grasp combat system and solid technical merits, Gladius is easily recommendable as a gift for any gamer during this holiday season.

If you're up for a deep, long-lasting, strategic gaming experience, then Gladius is perfect for you. Once you've played it for many hours, you'll spot little things about it that could have been fleshed out or polished up. However, at the heart of this game is an interesting and well-thought-out combat system, and there are so many viable combinations of characters and skills to experiment with that this game could easily keep you busy for much longer than most games do these days. The swing meters also add a refreshing bit of action to an otherwise fairly static style of gaming, which makes Gladius not just a great game but, in certain ways, a pioneering one.

Ultimately though, Gladius is an ambitious game that attempts to breathe new life into the genre. It's not entirely successful, but it is the best gladiator game I've played. Sure, it's the only one I've ever played in depth, but I really did have a decent time with it. At any rate, I'd much rather play this than sit through Ridley Scott's film again...

Although the action can be a little sluggish at points, Gladius is still a deep tactical RPG that will appeal to hardcore fans of the genre, yet still approachable enough for newbies to get into the game.
IGN (Oct 29, 2003)
Despite problems like repeated AI stupidity, Gladius is fun and offers a different take on strategy RPGs. This isn't a game you can just pick up off the store shelf and play. It takes some time to really figure out what it's about and explore all that you can do. A wide range of attack options, character customizations, tactics, and battle requirements put fresh faces on what would otherwise be a repetitive match structure. Most importantly, the swing meter is just enough action to stave off the usual turn-based boredom.

Game Revolution (Nov, 2003)
All of which makes Gladius a very respectable fighter. Many action-oriented gamers aren’t going to like this game at all, but you strategy buffs will be pleased that Gladius is such a strong contender, because you really don’t have any other options. There are no other games like it. This gladiator wins by default.
GamePro (US) (Oct 27, 2003)
Sadly, though, a strong graphics and sound package doesn’t make up for the overall impression of Gladius. The controls are maladjusted, and the story doesn’t unfold like an RPG story should. Mixing the two together only worsens this adventure into an unforgiving trip into gladiator lore.
