Proof that real-time strategy can work on a console?but not without some compromises. In an attempt to squeeze real-time strategy gameplay into the confines of a console (and its evil little RTS-hating controller), Jaleco has gone back to the drawing board and come up with a very cool game of smart little compromises. It plays outside the ancient RTS boundaries and deftly avoids the wild things waiting to tear apart its tender little throat.

Our story is not one of providence … not one of divinity or evolution from the primordial slime. Those stories we leave for the humans.

IGN (Nov 11, 2003)
It's no secret that real-time strategy fans have been searching for quality entries in the console market for what seems like forever. As despite the fact that some of the genre's most heralded and inspirational titles enjoyed an early existence on the platform, the last five years or so has seen RTS software flourish on the PC instead -- Leaving set-top boxes languishing about in mediocrity. Though we've managed to experience a couple of moderately entertaining ports of popular PC titles like Warcraft, Command and Conquer, and StarCraft, none could ever live up to their original inspirations; and very few could even come close to feeling as natural or as playable as those did.

The options are limited when it comes to RTS games on the Xbox. If you're really interested in that genre of gaming, Goblin Commander is a must. Goblin Commander wont appeal to every gamer only because of personal taste and not horrible gameplay. This is one of the surprise hits of 2003, and I was amazed when it surpassed my expectations. Goblin Commander is a good product and Jaleco did a great job in accomplishing a fun experience where others have failed.

Console owners starved for a real-time strategy game should find Goblin Commander to be a worthwhile experience. Real-time strategy is one genre that has yet to establish itself on consoles. Though ports have been made of PC classics like Command & Conquer and Starcraft, it's hard to call them outstanding games for consoles, because they were designed with mouse and keyboard input in mind. Jaleco's Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde distinguishes itself with a surprisingly streamlined interface, in much the same way that Nintendo's Pikmin did two years ago. While PC strategy veterans will find that the gameplay is pretty basic, console owners starved for a real-time strategy game should find Goblin Commander to be a worthwhile experience.

All I an all I would not recommend this game to be purchased without a rental first. I found it lacking the basics of other RTS games contain, and while it attempted to create something new, I feel the lack of strategy in the game caused it to fail in its attempt.

Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde was a fine game, but the lack of Xbox Live and system link is a big downside. It would have been nice to play against some friends or someone online. There is also no unlockable items for the clans to get as you play. It would have been nice to be able to have more clan members under your control than 10 at a time, also after running back to your base and getting more clan members gets old after a little bit. The lack of micromanagement doesn't let you focus on game battles. Overall Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde is not a bad RTS it just needs some work to get it right.
Goblin Commander's graphics are not quite as great as a Xbox title is expected, but they get the job done. Unleash the Horde has rich environments, full of assortment and nice animations. The camera is from a "bird's eye view", but does not have the ability to turn it 360 degrees. Instead, you must either move left/right/up/down or zoom in/out. The overall feel of Goblin Commander is a good one; this is the best RTS on any console, ever. Give it a rental, but had Xbox Live play had been added, a purchase would have been recommended.

Speaking from personal experience, few things are more frustrating from a game developer's perspective than reading a negative review from a critic who doesn't "get it." This means that Ron and Chris Millar, the lead designers of Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde, are two very frustrated individuals right now.
The Video Game Critic (Jul 03, 2005)
Commander's graphics are good, and you can easily zoom in or out, although swinging the camera is not permitted. Certain objects become translucent to allow you to see what's happening on the other side, but that can be confusing. I noticed a lot of nifty little detail in the graphics like birds flying overhead and a goblin with a whip riding the back of the troll. The sound effects included humorous screams and thunderous crashes when structures are demolished. Goblin Commander won't become an obsession for most gamers, but it's not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
