How do you get past the live tree in the forbidden forest (the one which causes all of the characters to fall asleep, and then attacks you)? I simply have no clue. I know that in the book Tom Bombadil helps, but in the game he is nowhere to be seen!

My memory is fuzzy, but Tom does appear in this one, I think you had to beat it just with Frodo tough.

How long do you have to wait? Do you just keep beating the tree? I normally get killed by it after a few minutes as there is nowhere to stand where the tree can't get you.
