Lord of The Rings: Return of The King features many unlockable goods, such as, three hidden characters, interviews with the cast of the movies and more. Many things can only be unlocked after defeating the game with certain ratings on each level or with certain characters. In addition to the wonderful story, the cooperative mode promises many hours of game play. The ability to play through the game again using a different line up of characters then you previously used, allows you to attempt different play styles on levels they were not created for.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a fantastic game that will appeal to a wide variety of people. Its topnotch presentation and strong graphics are sure to lure in casual fans that will have an easy time picking up its accessible gameplay. Frequent gamers that enjoy action games should dig its numerous combos and tougher difficulty levels.

The Return of the King is one of those games that will leave blisters on your thumbs and leave you with your jaw dropped wide open several times while playing it. Yes, kind readers, this is the kind of game that’s a true joy to play. And with its gorgeous visuals and amazing sound, the game brilliantly brings the film and Tolkien’s vision to life. Put this game on your holiday wish list, folks, you’ll find that this one makes the perfect gift.
GamePro (US) (Nov 03, 2003)
Return of the King is a nicely executed adventure worth fighting for, just be prepared to suffer inglorious defeats until you get used to the game cam. From novels to movies to games, Lord of the Rings remains a classic.
Truly a movie tie-in, the game has unlockable portions that are similar to the extras found on DVDs. Short vignets on the creation of the game and aspects of the film present more background on how the game and film tie together. For diehard fans of the series, those that most likely already have the first two game as well as DVD of the first two films, this game is definitely part of the Lord of the Rings experience and a must-own.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is, indeed, a modern day Golden Axe, but ratcheted up to massive levels of production. With excellent sound, graphics, and theatrical work bolstering it, Return of the King is a hardcore gamers' game with tremendous mass market appeal. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's just what old school gamers have been yammering about for years. ("Man, remember when we used to play BLANKITY BLANK in the arcades? That was awesome.")

Lord of the Rings - Return of the King is a very accessible game with top "pick up and play" value. It uses the best from the movie without spoiling your trip to the cinema. If you have the other two you would have to be insane to not follow the story through to the end. If you are new to the series then EA have saved the best until last.

Rollenspieler schauen besser weg.
Game Revolution (Nov, 2003)
You're playing it for what it is: a raucous blast through the final chapter in a fantastic film trilogy. It's bigger, longer and smarter than The Two Towers and is a perfect gift for the LOTR fan who somehow didn't run out and buy it immediately. Imagine that a game based on a movie that doesn't suck. Let's just hope Peter Jackson learns a lesson from Lucas and avoids the Ewok catastrophe altogether.

GameSpot (Nov 03, 2003)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King features fast-paced, cinematic action with plenty of pick-up-and-play appeal. It captures the sights and sounds of The Lord of the Rings movies and offers lots of DVD-style extras for fans of the movies. On its own merits, it's not a particularly lengthy or complex game, so you should be able to get through most of its content in a weekend. However, it's a great experience while it lasts, and the Lord of the Rings fan will want to hold on to this one for posterity. It does justice to the movies that inspired it--and that's no small feat.

The Video Game Critic (Dec 28, 2004)
Perhaps the novelty is finally wearing thin, but I enjoyed Return of the King far less than The Two Towers. Sure the quality of the graphics and sound are still there, but the gameplay is tiresome, the cameras angles stink, and the new two-player mode is a complete disappointment.
