TeamXbox (Mar 05, 2004)
There are a lot of people that should consider MTX: Mototrax a no-brainer. Obviously those fanatical about motocross will want to pick it up as well as anybody looking for a new way to race via Live. Guys and gals that got off on T.H.U.G. will also find a lot of gameplay value here since they will be able to dig deep into the lengthy Career Mode. Gamers jonesing for the return of the motocross track editor, a la Excitebike, will want to check it out as well. The only people that may balk at MTX: Mototrax a bit are the graphic ho’s who may want to choose their flavor after playing the other motocross title recently released for the Xbox. Overall, with what it brings to the tabletop and how well it brings it there, it’s hard to argue with Activision’s labeling of MTX as “The Ultimate Motocross Experience”.
IGN (Mar 04, 2004)
Overall, MTX: Mototrax provides one of the best places for the experience of racing in the dirt and having it online makes it even better. The racing tracks are fun to ride and with online stats there's a compelling reason to keep shaving seconds off your time. If only there were more tracks to race on.

Game Over Online (May 19, 2004)
MTX Mototrax is somewhat of a mixed racer in the end. The career mode and the concepts behind the single player game are definitely innovative, and are a solid addition to the racing genre. However, a somewhat tenuous connection between modes, a lackluster inclusion of a trick system and a limited number of tracks keeps Mototrax stuck at the gate for all but the most enthusiastic Motocross fans.

MTX: Mototrax is the best motocross racer you can buy right now. The fun that's received for performing tricks and winning races is worth the small effort it takes to do so. Gamers on a budget should stick with their favorite rental shop, however, those of you who have a little extra cash (and a love of motocross racing) will be happy to have MTX: Mototrax in their collection.

GameSpot (Mar 04, 2004)
All told, MTX Mototrax is a good game that should please fans of the motocross racing genre, but there are better choices on the market. MTX Mototrax may be the only game in town if you're dead-set on online play, but THQ's recent release, MX Unleashed, is still a better game across the board.
G4 TV: X-Play (Apr 03, 2006)
"MTX Mototrax" is a solid entry in the world of motocross games, but it's not much of a step up from "Excitebike 64," a game the same developer finished four years ago. We would like to see more tracks, as well as a better-developed free-ride mode. But most of what's here is good, dirty stuff.
GameSpy (Mar 11, 2004)
This game definitely is ambitious. Unfortunately, I would've traded things like the track creator and rider customization for tighter gameplay. Mototrax gets an A for effort, but about a B- in execution. I attribute much of that to being a brand-new game, and I'm faithful a sequel will smooth out the rough edges. For now, however, unless you're dead-set on playing online, I recommend MX Unleashed.

What we have here is a racing game and a freestyle game meshed into one, with the same controls programmed for each. And to be blunt, it doesn’t work all that well. Players will either gravitate to either one of the two sides, without really giving a crap about the one they don’t play. Yet the still have to go through it in order to complete the game. I don’t like it, and I quite sure that others won’t like it as well.
