Next Level Gaming (Nov 13, 2003)
A long way from a 67 I'd say. Next year I expect the jump to be in the graphic arena. As far as gameplay goes, lots of nice enhancements have been made, and most importantly the return of online gameplay and the introduction of XSN Sports. Does this look as pretty as ESPN? No, sorry. Does is play as well? I would say enough to warrant a serious look. Apparently this makes me a "fanboy" according to fans of ESPN and EA Sports. But I stand behind every word I've said in this review. Another nice job by Microsoft. Keep them coming!
IGN (Dec 05, 2003)
Do I like Inside Drive? Yes. Does it have flaws? Yes. Do I want to keep playing it now that I'm finished with the review? Yes, very much so. There's just something to playing a realistically paced game, and Inside Drive does a fantastic job of capturing this. If you're looking for a dunk contest, go with Live. If you're looking for a deep game with fun extra modes, go with ESPN. But if what you're looking for is an accurate representation of true NBA Basketball, I'd buy Inside Drive in a heartbeat. The best part about it, even if you play a season as the Blazers, you won't have to waste your free agent money on bail.
The Video Game Critic (Feb 04, 2011)
All in all, NBA Inside Drive really delivers where it counts, and its arcade style has held up surprisingly well over time.
Video Game Talk (Jan 05, 2004)
While not a bad game by any means, people who are content with Sega and EA NBA games will not see much of a reason to jump ship to the Big Green’s franchise. Without any innovation to set it above the crowd, NBA Inside Drive 2004 seems like a minor upgrade to last years model, with the XSN label integrated to try and make up for its lack of change. So if you are in the mood for some ball and don’t have a preference to any of the games, but desire the coordination of online seasons and tournaments this could be the game for you.
GameZone (Nov 11, 2003)
The game suffers from sluggish game play and perceived slow controller response issues. Several controllers were used, all with the same slow response times. NBA Inside Drive 2004 has great environments, and solid player modeling but the big draw is the online support.
XBox-Zone (Dec 16, 2003)

Extreme Gamer (Dec 10, 2003)
NBA Inside Drive is worth the investment if you want some quality basketball online or offline. Although with sports games, its best to try them before you make any hasty decisions. Keep in mind that only get the great features of the XSN with NBA Inside Drive 2004.
GamePro (US) (Nov 20, 2003)
NBA Inside Drive 2004 is a decent basketball game with an excellent online tie-in. Still, this series needs a serious wake-up call if it hopes to compete with the likes of EA and ESPN next year.
GameSpot (Nov 21, 2003)
If the developers had only included a stiffer defensive AI--and one that didn't rely so much on reach-ins and steals--NBA Inside Drive 2004 might have turned out to be a pretty good game, even with its lackluster presentation. As it stands, the uneven gameplay, ho-hum visuals, and shallow franchise mode leave the game with very little to help it stand out from the competition. The bottom line is that there are better choices than NBA Inside Drive 2004, unless you're dead-set on having XSN-enabled features.
Diehard GameFan (Jan 07, 2004)
Look beyond the fact that this is not NBA Live, and look beyond the fact that this is not ESPN NBA Basketball. NBA Inside Drive 2004 is a very impressive basketball title that has a better passing system and camera angle than any other game out there, not to mention the XSN Sports features found only in Inside Drive. Unfortunately, a weak commentary track and spotty Franchise Mode keep this one from being great. Definitely worth a rental if you’re a big b-ball or sports fan, or if you’re a big X-Box Live player.
Factornews (Jan 08, 2004)
GameSpy (Dec 14, 2003)
Unlike last season, where it held its own against the competition, NBA Inside Drive 2004 sees itself falling away from the pack. The game has improved -- most notably by including some very thorough online abilities -- but not to the degree that the EA and Sega games have. On the other hand, if you're looking for a relatively easy way to spin and juke your way around the best the NBA can offer -- and don't mind being on the receiving end of just as many ankle-breakers -- then this isn't a bad way to spend a few hours.
Game Revolution (Dec, 2003)
But slang mishaps are the least of Inside Drive's worries. The game is trying to compete in a tough market, and despite some decent mechanics and online play, it cannot hold its own in the paint against the big boys. There's just no reason to draft this underachiever when some big dogs are still up for grabs.
