I don’t know what else to say about Stranger other than if you have the means, purchase it right now. This is the game that proves once and for all that Oddworld is much more than an elite game developer. This is a group of ignited minds so brimming with creativity and dedication to bringing gamers fresh ideas that it’s altogether humbling. It’s almost as if they exist outside of the industry as a whole, far removed from any influence or inspiration other than their own. This is what happens when a group of ultra-talented people set out with a single vision in mind and work together as a team to make it a reality—a mantra that was once common in the gaming industry but over the last five years has all but dissipated as outside influences continue to barge in on the creative process. Basking in that again was for me a complete and utter joy; I only hope that over the course of the next few years I’ll get to experience it a few more times.
Stranger's Wrath is another entry into a game of the year race that's growing quicker than any year before it. It finds itself on that list because of how much it offers to the player, and how immersed it makes them feel. It's an engrossing world, and though the series creator wants to take these characters elsewhere, here's hoping we can get at least one more visit.

The Oddworld games have always been known for their great storylines, great graphics, and generally strange cast of eclectic monster-looking-but-not-quite-a-monster characters. Well, their newest game just got stranger. Or rather, it just got Stranger. The Xbox-exclusive Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath (OSW) is the best effort from a developer known already for good games. And OSW is much better than the previous Oddworld universe Xbox-exclusive title, Munch’s Oddysee, by bringing an absolutely amazing story, just as amazing graphics, and a Sergio Leone spaghetti Western flair to both its lead character and setting. OSW is a great action-adventure game that both fans and non-fans of Oddworld Inhabitants work will thoroughly enjoy.

One of the best first-person shooters on the Xbox, and likely to be in contention for 2005 game of the year. Great innovative gameplay backed by goegours visuals makes this venture into Oddworld worth any Xbox gamer's time.

A stunning and exquisitely realized masterpiece that delivers a gaming experience unlike any that we’ve seen before, Stranger’s Wrath rekindles the artistic allure of Oddworld’s previous works, and is truly visionary in its delivery of gameplay. Once you set foot in this imaginative world, you won’t want to leave it.

Old-tyme Oddworld veterans may be a bit put off by the latest installment's apparently "dumbed-down" FPS intentions, but they shouldn't be--this game is just as creative and clever as the earlier Oddworlds, even if the Stranger spends most of his time staring down a targeting reticule.

Granted, having extended conversations would seem a bit out of place in an action game like this, but without a real GameSpeak, it feels like a little piece of Oddworld is missing. But hey, those are about as minor as complaints can be. The fact is, Stranger's Wrath is an outstanding game that successfully combines two genres while never feeling as though it's neglecting either of them. The missions are well thought out and fun to play, with the bizarre weapons only adding to that fun. The wonderfully surreal art style, quirky characters, and funny dialogue that define Oddworld are also in place, making this some of the most fun I've had with my Xbox in some time.

I have to say that Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is the first really great game I have played in quite a long time. I have a soft spot for games that actually bring something new to the table in an otherwise overpopulated market of rehashed ideas and half-assed sequels. It's refreshing to see, and even more enjoyable to play. With great graphics, decent replay value, varied gameplay, a story worth paying attention to, and a uniqueness that could only be successfully pulled off by a developer like Oddworld Inhabitants, Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is a pleasant surprise during a time of the year in which good games are very few and far between.
IGN (Jan 24, 2005)
Up until its latest effort, Oddworld's games have predominantly leaned toward simple action-puzzle titles. They're somewhat non-traditional titles filled with beautiful backgrounds and grotesque yet adorable characters, and they're heavy on language and attitude. Oddworld Stranger's Wrath marks the developer's exploration into an entirely different arena. Stranger is predominantly a first-person shooter that eschews the Oddworld games of the past. Stranger offers gamers a first- and third-person action-platform hybrid, starring a new lead character to set the pace for Lorne Lanning's ongoing Oddworld universe. The change is welcome.

GameSpot (Jan 24, 2005)
Oddworld Inhabitants, the creator of the Oddworld universe, has turned out a few fairly different types of games set in the same unique universe. Abe's Oddysee looked like a 2D platformer, but was really more of a puzzle game, constantly forcing you to find the right path through a number of sticky situations. Abe teamed up with a wheelchair-bound fishlike thing named Munch for Munch's Oddysee, which took the puzzle-solving to 3D and played off the two-character team for much of its gameplay. The Oddworld series now sees its most drastic change yet with the release of Oddworld Stranger's Wrath. The new game's emphasis on action and its attempt to combine third-person platforming and first-person shooting means that this new Oddworld has little to do with previous games to bear the name, but regardless of its place in the franchise, Stranger's Wrath is a great game that brings together a few styles of gameplay startlingly well.
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath is going to be one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2005. Coming in after the huge holiday season and before the big releases of the spring should help out sales a bit, but not enough to make it a well-known title. Superb action, great length, gorgeous visuals and a lot of originality make this title a clear winner.

To wrap up my review I will say, if you fancy taking a rather strange journey with a mysterious character through a magical land of outlaws then Oddworld Stranger's Wrath has what it takes in the story and inventiveness departments to thoroughly entertain you. The third and first person perspectives are put to good use here and there is a hell of a lot to like about the feel and characterization of the game. Oddworld Stranger's Wrath has a huge personality and if this is what attracts you to gaming then you must see this one.

Stranger's Wrath is undeniably a great game and one that any self-respecting FPS fan should own, but it feels like so much time was spent on the look and the mechanics of the game that the structure fell to the wayside. Having said this, Stranger's Wrath is still so far ahead of the majority of the dross that's out there, it's untrue. Besides, it's a great ride while it lasts and is without question one of the most refreshing and truly inventive games to ever appear on the Xbox. It'll be a hard-hearted person who doesn't get some enjoyment out of what should rightly be regarded as a modern work of art.
G4 TV: X-Play (Mar 29, 2006)
Electronic Arts has a knack for buying geese and getting them to lay golden eggs. First it was Burnout 3, and Stranger's Wrath is almost as monumental an occasion. Few thought Lorne Lanning and his Oddworld Inhabitants crew had it in them, but with EA's help, Stranger's Wrath is a standout Xbox title that not only kicks butt in its own right, but gives the console a niche it was previously missing.

Live Ammo was definitely a nice change of pace from your, now lame in comparison, regular projectiles. Although a little too easy, with the exception of the final half hour, and too short, Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath is an enjoyable game. Just when the cashing in of bounty after bounty starts to get stale the game takes a considerable twist, making some significant gameplay alterations, which keeps things interesting for the remainder of the game.

Even as a died in the wool shooter fan, I have to admit that Stranger's Wrath isn't on a par with most shooters for balls-out action and at the same time manages to lose some of the off-the-wall appeal that previous Oddworld games had in spades. As a tech demo it's astounding. As a game it's well above average in most senses. But would we recommend Xbox owners rush out and buy it for full price? Sadly not, unless you're fed up with a lack of exclusive titles, want something new and have money burning a hole in your pockets. We expected much bigger things and certainly never expected to urge you to rent it first.

Although not all games lead to an addiction, there has to be a certain spark when you first play the game making you want to continue playing. I had a hard time forcing me to play the game thoroughly because it just didn’t make me feel anything. The awful voice-overs, the identity crisis and those damn ducks make me long for good ol’ Abe. I sure hope Oddworld Inhabitants thinks the same about this, so please blow some new life force into our beloved anti hero. Abe for president, again!

The Video Game Critic (Mar 16, 2008)
Stranger's Wrath features sharp graphics, finely tuned controls, and first-rate audio. The dialogue is excellent, I really love the little quips from the chipmunks ("hey - you got somethin' hangin' from your nose!"). But as well constructed as the game is, the western motif wore on me, and after the novelty wore off, the game struggled to maintain my attention. Like the first game, Stranger's Wrath is thoughtfully designed but may be too clever for its own good.
