The Next Level (Dec 10, 2003)
Given the pedigree of Bizarre Creations, it should be no surprise to anyone that Project Gotham Racing 2 has turned out even better than their first Xbox title. They’ve had a good two years to hone their craft, and it shows in every aspect of the game. Nothing in the game is unpolished, even the garage (which includes a fun mini-game called Geometry Wars). For those who are looking for a racer that’s just as challenging offline as it is online, look no further than PGR2.
Gaming Nexus (Dec 09, 2003)
I didn't think they could do it but Bizarre Creations has created a game that has managed to get my mind off of Gran Turismo. Excellent in nearly every single respect and well worth your $50.
GamesFirst! (Dec 14, 2003)
If you are looking for a new Xbox game, Project Gotham Racing 2 is a solid purchase. The racing is incredibly fun and the sheer number of cars, tracks, and race types ensures that you will be playing PGR2 for a long time to come. The game gets even more addictive if you connect to Xbox LIVE, but it isn’t required for an amazing gaming experience. This is an exceptional value for the $50 investment. Rent it first if you must, but you’ll most likely end up purchasing it anyway. Project Gotham Racing 2 is simply one of the best racing games on the market today.
AceGamez (2004)
Project Gotham Racing 2 has a single player mode that is deep, long, challenging and fun. There are leader boards for every event, the online games are a blast, as expected and will keep the game alive for quite sometime. New downloads will be coming out, there are plenty of tracks and cars to unlock, the soundtrack is huge, the sound and graphics get a big thumbs up and the Kudos system offers something different, even if it is a little flawed. PGR2 is without doubt the best racer on Xbox and one of the best online gaming experiences around, making it a very worthwhile purchase for everyone who owns that big black box.
Gameplanet (Nov 28, 2003)
On top of everything mentioned there will be added content for download should Xbox Live be available to you. There is the promise of cars that is evident from the three Xbox Live rooms in the showroom, each one housing up to eight cars and then the possibility of future cities added as well. It's a big call, but PGR 2 really is one of the best racers ever created. With a game as large as this you will be striving to improve all of your skills on each track, trying to unlock everything in the game, or even just trying to get the highest accolades per track. If racing games appeal to you then this has to be at the top of your most wanted list this holiday season.
If you're still in any doubt, listen to this: The fastest cars from PGR (the Porsche Carrera GT and the Ferrari F50) are in this game - but they don't even make it into the fastest category! - Forget searching for the need for speed elsewhere in lesser games, you want PGR2, you need PGR2 believe me, you do!
1UP (2003)
The cars look better than ever—just shy of photo-realistic—and the driving physics feel about the same, so if you were good at the first game, you should be able to jump right into this. The Kudos system has been revamped with a combo system, but it really feels superficial. If the Kudos weren't included, it wouldn't detract from the game, but it might make you feel a little less good about yourself.
100 (Apr 06, 2004)
Project Gotham racing is a rare sequel, one in which a popular original is improved on. The lush backgrounds and active reflections on the cars look wonderful. Via Xbox Live, you can race online and download ghosts (replays of your best runs), with which to challenge your rivals.
100 (Feb 19, 2006)
In conclusion, I think Project Gotham Racing 2 is a very solid racer. The graphics and sounds are well done, the music is good and has variety, and the draw distance is more than good in this game. Being able to play split screen multiplayer on Live is just sweet, and makes up for the poor draw distances in offline 3 or 4 player games. Overall this is a very well done racing title and a great reason to buy a Live kit if you don't already own one. I couldn't be happier with a racing game that was designed to be realistic, yet still fun to play. Sorry Mario, but as much as I love hurling fireballs at other karts, I still can't help but love PGR2.
Video Game Talk (Jan 01, 2004)
This isn't just one of the best racing games for the XBox (and considering the emphasis placed on that genre on the console, that itself is a high compliment), it's among the best games for the platform, period. An essential purchase.
Game Shark (Nov 21, 2003)
Those gamers hoping for an automotive adventure on par with Gran Turismo will be disappointed. This game isn't about simulation, but it's by far the best arcade racing game to appear on a console. While the single player is fun to truly appreciate the game requires Xbox Live. The integration of the online elements into the game is perfection itself.
GameSpy (Nov 22, 2003)
There's little doubt that Microsoft hopes that Bizarre Creations can shape the Gotham series into a Gran Turismo beater, and frankly there's also little doubt that the developer is on the right track. Its mix of impeccable control, cleverly designed courses, and gorgeous graphics is certainly an appealing one. There are a few small wrinkles to be ironed out before an entry into the series can truly be considered a classic, but it's no secret that each iteration is evolving leaps and bounds beyond the previous one, and that any racing fan -- especially those who love Xbox Live -- will want to pick this up.
XboxAddict (Nov 13, 2003)
Work on more realistic dynamics for the car, as they don't all spin that easy on turns. As far as anything else, you guys turned this around nicely, great job!!
GameZone (Nov 13, 2003)
The bicycle leans casually against the wall, likely vibrating as the pulsing engines rev past it, engines winding up and down through the twists and turns. The cobblestones on the course through Florence send a shudder through the car, as it decelerates for the hard turn coming up.
TeamXbox (Nov 13, 2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is so good in a multitude of areas to be considered the new force to be reckoned with in the racing arena. As of now Project Gotham Racing 2 is the best racing game ever, period. The gameplay with the kudos system along with the ability to race eight at a time on Live AND receive rank updates via the scoreboard makes it unique and somewhat revolutionary as of right now. The graphics and audio are sweet enough to make a Cottonmouth drool. And the amount and variety of the automobiles would be impressive even to Jay Leno. Only time will tell how it will fare when GT4 comes out; we already know that it won’t be able to compare graphically, and we also know that the online interface will be more cumbersome. Will there be enough interesting gameplay elements and cars to challenge PGR2 wheel to wheel? My magic eight ball says “all signs point to no”.
XBox Solution (XBS) (Nov 23, 2003)
I was happily surprised when I was greeted with the amazing visuals in PGR2, being the cynic I am, I often questioned the graphic shots I had seen online and called them doctored or CGI, boy was I wrong. The amazing graphics as well as accurate representation of each of the numerous cars calls for a big round of a applause for Bizarre Creations. With PGR2 featuring so many game play types as well as multiplayer abilities, the fun seems to never end. PGR2 is definitely the racing title of the year for hardcore fans, those that do not like racing sims, and prefer arcade style racers should avoid PGR2 like the plague, the game play is simply for that person who is willing to slow down on the turn, not the one barreling into the wall expecting to take off from it at full speed.
A few people have mentioned that the tracks are a little lifeless but when you're travelling at 200 kph power sliding past Red Square in Moscow with 5 opponents in front of you and smoke billowing everywhere, well the last thing you'll be looking out for are balloons being released. Are you a fan of racing games? If you are then PGR2 comes highly recommended as the best racing game on Xbox yet, one of the best on almost any platform and as close to perfection as can be expected.
Game Chronicles (Jan 09, 2004)
If you like to race and if you are looking for one of the best arcade racers to play alone or online then you’ve found it with PGR2. It doesn’t get much better than this and I can’t recommend this game highly enough. A must-have addition to any Xbox gamer’s permanent library.
Worth Playing (Nov 19, 2003)
All parts being considered, Project Gotham Racing 2 is almost a masterful display of how great a racing title can be. Anyone can pick up the game and have fun with it due to the wide degree of difficulty levels, and people with Xbox Live can take to the streets with people from across the globe to compete in races of style and speed. Project Gotham Racing 2 is probably has some of the best graphics of any game to date, especially when compared to other racing games, but this time around the eye candy comes coupled with compelling, entertaining gameplay that is simply a blast to play. Gamers, buckle your seatbelts and make sure all safety devices are fastened, one of the best racing games to grace video games is ready to tear apart the contenders in the street racing genre and you're coming along for the ride.
Netjak (Feb 06, 2004)
I know Project Gotham Racing 2 did a great job holding my interest because I’ve never had this urge to unlock all the cars in a racing game since the old San Francisco Rush series. In fact, it probably gets my vote for best game of 2003. The online play alone is worth the purchase, but with such an extensive and expandable offline game, I can confidently say that this is a must buy. If you have an Xbox and you love racing games, or if you’re like me and have even just a mild interest in them, this game is easily worth the purchase.
TalkXbox (Dec 02, 2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is so good in a number of areas it has to be considered the new king of racing games. The gameplay with the kudos system along with the ability to race eight at a time on Live and also recieve rank updates via the scoreboard makes it very unique and unmatched. The graphics and audio are top of the line. The new cars add a lot more enjoyment. The added mini game in the garage is a blast to play but extremely hard. Microsoft is becoming one of the top Xbox publishers today. I can recommend this game to any person that has a fancy for racing games. If you don’t like this genre then at least give the game a rental, it might change the way you look at racing games. My hat is off to you Bizarre Creations. Well done.
This is the best racing game I have ever played. This game will bring you back to being a racing fan if you haven't played them in awhile, and is the single reason to get Xbox Live.
Gaming Target (Jan 13, 2004)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is a fine example of what a sequel should be. In a rather limited development time, Bizarre Creations has added a considerable amount of depth to its racing title while still keeping what makes the game so great (and fixing what makes the game not so great). If you're even slightly interested in the racing genre you should pick this game up. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Want to see how other players scored higher than you did? Download a ghost of their run to compete directly against their run or to try and pick up on some of their techniques. This Live integration is basically transparent – just have your cable plugged in when you start the game and you’re good to go. Of course the Xbox Live support extends to multiplayer racing. In multiplayer mode you can race against up to 7 other players to see who is the fastest or who can earn the most kudos in a race. You can keep the kudos that you earn in online races and Xbox Live will track your performance and rank you against other players. There is one catch, though. You'll have to unlock a car in the single player game to use it online. Well, to use it online and earn race credit that is. You can still "ghost" drive a locked vehicle so that you can participate in a race.
Project Gotham Racing 2 is further evidence that Microsoft is making great strides in proving that the Xbox is a machine to be reckoned with. With graphics that shine and improved gameplay over the prequel this game rocks. Add to this package great online play and an innovative use of Xbox Live for downloading or watching the other racers on the leader boards and you have a very solid all around racer. This reviewer cannot see any reason not to award PGR2 the coveted Dagameboyz Players Choice Award.
IC-Games (Nov 11, 2003)
What is the secret of PGR2 success? Is it the fascinating helping of pure unadulterated Xbox Live! fun with downloadable ghost cars, more stats than you can shake a large stick at, and of course the bonus content? Or could it be the almost photo-realistic graphics of the plethora of available cars and courses that are probably the best seen on a console or PC to date? Or is it the fantastic single mission structure that saves your best records for the world to view? It's all undeniably more fun with Live enabled but even as a single player experience, nothing really touches Project Gotham Racing and nothing probably will for some time to come.
Deeko (2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is simply the best Xbox racer to date... and one of the best console racers that I've had the chance to play. Everything in the game has been upgraded and updated, easily providing gamers with a gaming package that simply can't fail. The controls are dead on, the visuals are simply dazzling, the music and sound is terrific and the game modes are plentiful and exciting. The Xbox Live functionality simply adds to the overall value, giving players not only a solid single player experience, but an unbelievable online experience to boot. With an extremely diverse selection of cars and courses, this is easily a game that you'll come back to time and time again and it's one that I would HIGHLY recommend. If you are into racing or if you're simply looking for a fun online game, Project Gotham Racing 2 is a title that you should pick up immediately.
IGN (Nov 17, 2003)
When Metropolis Street Racer was released for the Dreamcast back in the day, it instantly attracted a group of gamers with its unique style of racing that put as much weight on style as it did speed. Project Gotham Racing did the same, initiating even more gamers with its improved gameplay and graphics. Project Gotham Racing 2, we're convinced, will repeat history once again, this time garnering even more attention and praise than ever before. This game is good - real good.
Daily Game (2003)
These five factors, along with intelligent AI that changes its aggression and strategy with each successive level, make for the best racing game I’ve ever played. The online stat-tracking and multiplayer options, as ingenious as they are, are simply icing on an already delectable cake. I simply can’t say enough good things about PGR2. Really, this is one game I consider to be an early Christmas present from Microsoft. You’d be wise to go out and pick it up for yourself.
GamersMark (Nov 30, 2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is one the most ideal gaming packages you’ll ever come across. With the inclusion of XBOX LIVE multiplayer, addicting/challenging gameplay, beautiful graphics, and an audio library that’s beyond spectacular, you’ll feel as if the game is on a level of greatness beyond that of which the human mind can comprehend. PGR2 is a game that none should go without.
XBox Evolved (Apr 10, 2004)
With a huge number of challenges, engaging off- and online multiplayer, and a fun reason to go for higher scores, PGR2 offers every bit of depth you could want from a racing game. It does so without becoming tedious, with the endless car unlocking and tuning of the Gran Turismo series. While it has a few minor flaws, the game is very solidly built overall and is accommodating to gamers of all skill levels. Quite simply, this is the best racing game ever made.
Project Gotham Racing 2 is a great racing game that continues to implement great new features never before seen in the genre. To top it off, it can be found for about $20 now. It?s a must-have for any Xbox owner looking for a great racing experience.
Xboxdynasty (XD) (Apr 11, 2005)
KEINES ! ! !
For a single-player game you will find Project Gotham Racing 2 a wonderous game with a lot of licensed cars and almost 100 tracks to race in. Live play falls a bit short unless you are new to it, enjoy just racing or earning Kudos over others or have never played the likes of Midtown Madness 3 or Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge on Live. I can only enjoy going around different tracks for a while, especially if I haven't unlocked all the cars and am getting creamed by the competition. Overall this game is superb to look at, listen to and play. It's just too bad online couldn't have had more meat to it.
92 (Nov 30, 2003)
Video Games Daily (Nov 13, 2003)
Basically, there's nothing anywhere else quite like this experience right now. A vast, superbly designed racing game with untold depth, slick presentation, tight controls, comfortably realistic handling, stunningly beautiful graphics, and replay value beyond measure thanks to a handsomely crafted single player mode, and the limitless entertainment on offer from Xbox Live online play. I haven't even touched on the other stuff like the fantastic replays. You won't get bored with Gotham 2 and it will always be great for a quick spin long after you've 'finished' it. You should buy this.
92 (Nov 26, 2003)
Operation gelungen, Patient lebt.
Armchair Empire, The (Jan 09, 2004)
If you give PGR2 even a quick test drive, you’ll be quickly impressed by all it has to offer. No, you can’t modify the cars in the garage like Gran Turismo titles or take to the streets in Fast and the Furious-style cars like Need for Speed Underground. But PGR2 is a racing video gamers fantasy fulfilled nevertheless, with tight controls, a good variety of tracks, a garage full of excellent looking vehicles and picturesque cityscapes, and great online gameplay through Live that any Live subscriber will immediately appreciate. The high- octane PGR2 is one of the best Xbox titles this year, so get out the driving gloves and gentleman, (and ladies too), start your engines!
Factornews (Feb 09, 2004)
X-Power (Nov 30, 2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is heerlijk verslavend!

PGR 2 is an arcade racer that plays splendidly. The single player experience is solid, but unlocking cars becomes more of a chore than the fun experience it should have been. If you're hooked up to Xbox live, this is one of the definitive purchases of 2003.
The controls are more natural and distinct, the graphics are polished, and the increased amount of cities and gameplay modes lend a much-needed breath of fresh air to a series that began back on the esteemed Dreamcast. Being able to power through Barcelona and Edinburgh in the newest and best that the automotive industry has to offer is a pure thrill, and it's something that is only enhanced by the newly restructured Kudos Challenge mode. And if the wonderful experience of incomparably fun single-player racing action isn't enough, the degree to which Xbox Live has been integrated into virtually every corner of the game will certainly impress and entertain you. Simply put, Project Gotham Racing 2 is now the standard for racing titles, and if you're the least bit interested in the genre, you shouldn't hesitate for a second in picking it up.
Darkstation (Dec 01, 2003)
PGR2 fixes almost all of the problems that plagued original, and even manages to improve upon everything else. If you are looking for a top-notch racing title for your Xbox, look no further then PGR2, a great looking/playing arcade style racer.
Project Gotham Racing 2 is a uniquely challenging driving game. PGR2 expands in every way upon the original. The Xbox Live component is seamlessly integrated into both the single player mode and multiplayer modes. Future downloadable content is promised and it should keep this game in your Xbox, but if you are lacking a broadband connection then be wary that a lot of the experience is missed. The offline mode is still enthralling enough to keep players entertained though so don’t be hesitant on picking this up. I am impressed with the Xbox Live components of the game, this is Microsoft’s ideal Xbox Live demonstration title, half of the experience is definitely missed if you’re offline and this is a drawback. However, this is a sensational racing game which any Xbox owner should buy.
The kudos system is back and better than ever. There are new ways to score with the system that includes drafting, 180's, and slides that are now easier to perform. Driving is difficult to master basically because it is all about style rather than speed. Once you learn how to mix style and speed together, you will rack up some huge points on Xbox Live. There are plenty of unlockable cars in PGR2. There are plenty of tracks in the game to drive on as well, plus, PGR2 never really ends. Your scores, ghosts, and times are posted on Xbox Live to share with the rest of the world and compared to them. If you have Xbox Live, I strongly suggest picking this one up now. If you do not have XBL, it is still an incredibly long game to play alone.
Gamestyle (May 01, 2006)
Crossing the finish line, the troubles 'transfigure' as simply an unfortunate crack in PGR2's windshield - a blemish, but nothing so crippling as a flat tyre. After learning the control regimen, it only takes a few adjustments to drive each model with aplomb - all the way up through the mighty 660-horsepowered Enzo (albeit one that appears to have Colin McRae at the wheel). So, turn up the radio, blast through the streets of your favoured international locale - preferably with a few friends on Live - and PGR2 works its wily magic. In no time at all, it becomes apparent the packaging may require one more label: "WARNING! Product may be habit-forming!"
90 (Nov 24, 2003)
Gry OnLine (Aug 31, 2004)
Produkt Bizarre Creations to rewelacyjne wyścigi, obowiązkowy zakup każdego posiadacza Xboxa.
Extreme Gamer (Nov 24, 2003)
PGR2 is the best racer out for the Xbox. The game delivers a great driving experience online and offline. The revamped Kudos and car class system is great, you will have tones to do and everything will be ranked worldwide, if you have Xbox Live. This game without live is just as good, but to get the full experience this game is worth investment into the online gaming world. I am impressed in the variety and quality of development into this game. Pick this baby up, don’t wait any longer.
90 (UK) (Nov 28, 2003)
Although I've dabbled in Xbox Live games on numerous occasions over the past year, it wasn't until yesterday afternoon that Microsoft's online gaming service truly landed in my living room. Oddly enough, it happened during a single-player game of Project Gotham Racing 2. As I sat there happily throwing a curvy posterchild for "American muscle" into bend after bend in search of an elusive first-place finish, a little envelope-shaped icon appeared in the bottom of the screen. Eyeing it suspiciously, I finished my race, hit the A button a few times to check my score and compare it against worldwide leaderboards for that particular track, and then hit Y to pull up the game's Xbox Live menu. Sitting there at the bottom of my friends list was a request from Kristan to join him in a race - and all I had to do to switch from the cosy perfectionist pursuits of the single-player game to the heat of a six-player race over broadband was hit the A button.
GamePro (US) (Nov 18, 2003)
Project Gotham Racing 2 has finally roared back onto the Xbox streets. This game?s a sprinter, designed to get anyone into a high-speed racing mindset as quickly and painlessly as possible.
XBox-Zone (Nov 27, 2003)
Gamezilla (Dec 08, 2001)
Project Gotham Racing is a race game with style. Its strength lies in the way you drive your car, not the ability to get it from point A to point B as quickly as possible. With easy-to-learn gameplay and a learning curve that lets you build up your skills as you progress without overwhelming you, Gotham is an incredibly fun title. I'm a strong fan of race titles, from the days of Wipeout to Gran Turismo and even Formula One 2001, and I was still impressed with the originality of Project Gotham Racing. After you've played it for a while, you'll understand why it has such a good replay value.
GameSpot (Nov 19, 2003)
Two years after Project Gotham Racing set the standard for Xbox driving games, Microsoft and Bizarre Creations present Project Gotham Racing 2, an impressive overhaul of the original that adds more cars, features more racing venues, and offers the ability to play online against up to seven other players. These key new additions should be more than enough to convince fans of the previous game to pick up the sequel, while those new to the series will find in PGR 2 a long-lasting, fully featured racing game that's much more impressive, overall, than most of its competition. Like its predecessor, PGR 2 is a relatively arcadelike racing experience that really can't be considered a realistic simulation, despite its use of real-world cars and locations.
Game Critics (Mar 31, 2004)
Project Gotham Racing 2 is decidedly geared toward visceral gameplay and exaggerated physics, although it possesses a sim-like refinement. It's packed full of so many modes and challenges that experiencing everything the game has to offer is an almost overwhelming endeavor. It may seem preposterous that I would suggest they include more options (such as customizable cars), but when a game offers so many things, I naturally ask, well, why doesn't it have that, too? Nevertheless, this is one of the most refined and most unique racers of the last few years. It's getting harder and harder for racing games to stand out, but Bizarre Creations succeeded in making Project Gotham Racing 2 a racing game unlike any other.
The Video Game Critic (Jun 23, 2004)
The four-player split-screen is fun but I wish it was more obvious when you finish the race. I often found myself driving an extra lap before noticing the small word "Finished" in the corner of my screen. Project Gotham 2 may not be the end-all of racers, but fans of the original will consider this more of a good thing.
Game Revolution (Dec, 2003)
It was a not so dark and slightly rainy night. I was running a quick errand at the store when the rain had just started to come down. As I sat at a traffic light, I couldn’t help but be bummed that, once again, god hates San Francisco, at least in terms of the weather. In what can only be considered a case of instant karmic retribution, I started my turn when all hell broke loose. I hit a patch of black ice and started a drift that any Initial D. fan would have envied - except that my tires were now slick and control was a luxury.

They don't spoil the game totally, especially if you have access to Xbox Live (The game comes with a free two month trial, but you need a credit card and you don't get a communicator, although they are available separately), but to a non-Live subscriber the game has more limited appeal. Scoring this game then is rather difficult, as the reader may or may not have a Live account, and I've taken this into account with the score. I'd say mark it slightly higher if you have Live, slightly lower if you don't. It's not a total disaster, but a little bit more care and attention (and possibly another couple of months) would have made for a far better single player experience, and a much better game, probably worthy of that 10 award I wanted to give it.
So in a genre where fresh-faced audacity and sheer nerve so frequently fall beneath market demands, it’s the determined offspring of Metropolis Street Racer that provides the latest barrage of fireworks. Still a party with doors unflinchingly closed to its opponents, PGR2 stands as a genuine, professional arcade racing event for its followers.

While this is more of the same as Project Gotham Racing and MSR for the Dreamcast it’s still good fun. New cities include Florence, Moscow, Washington, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Yokohama, Stockholm, Hong Kong, and Sydney and these offer their own challenges as you’d expect. The handling and physics of the 100+ cars from 14 classes are pretty true to form - a Porsche will outrun a Focus etc etc. With the amount of bits and bobs such as the cars, the career mode and the cities this makes for one of the better racing games on the Xbox.
Gaming Age (Nov 13, 2003)
Even besides the A.I. issue, Project Gotham Racing 2 is an excellent racing title for the Xbox. The Xbox Live support is probably worth the price of admission alone, and the polished visuals, generally fun racing action, and slick selection of exotic vehicles and locales should be enough to satisfy.
