This game needs to be in every true racing gamers’ library. Hours and hours (and days) of racing excitement, awesomely detailed graphics, and customizeable soundtrack make for a top of the line racer.

Kokeilkaa silti.

Project Gotham is the first racing game that I know of to show damage on real-life car models, such as the Volkswagen Beetle. Unfortunately, the damage is minimal. You can crash all day long, it doesn't matter. I banged up the side of my Bug several times, and the only damage I had to show for it was a small dent and a broken tail light! It's disappointing to see such little damage in a game that excels in almost every other way.
GamePro (US) (Nov 15, 2001)
While Project Gotham shares many gameplay similarities with Bizzare’s other racer, Metropolis Street Racer for the Dreamcast, this speedster is definitely much better in every respect. In the twisting streets of San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, and London, you must prove that your driving skills consist of more than just crossing the finish line in first place. Graphically, an attention to detail is evident in Project Gotham. And if the sights aren’t enough, your ears will rock to the banging tunes. Don’t get Project Gotham just because it’s one of the first racers for the Xbox. Get it because it's one of the top driving games for any system.

Lastly, this is an awesome game, buy it! I swear I have never played such a piece of shit in my life, and that's why I think it's simply marvelous! It's very good and that's why it sucks. Am I getting through to you here? Good.

IGN (Nov 09, 2001)
This one's not for everyone. That being said, neither is the Tekken or Gran Turismo series. Both are games that require some heavy duty dedication to really find the beauty of their respective play mechanics, and Gotham is no different. It's a tough game that demands perfection more often than not, and to beat some particular races you'll be restarting the entire race the moment you've made an error. But if you're meticulous enough to enjoy getting into the meat of a deep title like this one, you'll find that the designers have really tried to create a new driving experience, and for the most part, succeeded in doing just that.

You race through more then 200 different circuits in New York, London, Tokyo, and San Francisco. There are over 25 high performance dream cars to unlock including the Ferrari F50, Porsche Boxster S, Corvette Z06, and Aston Martin Vanquish. There is a multi-player aspect to this game. You and up to three other friends can go head to head in an all out race. But this game lacks the support of the Xbox system link so you would have to play 4 players on one tiny screen for each. But overall there is at least 20+ hours of racing here. For only 20 dollars, how can you lose?

The Xbox has once again shown that it can indeed deliver a great game that looks fantastic, which leaves me running out of reasons not to go out and snatch one up myself. With games like this in its arsenal, I would be surprised if the Xbox didn’t hit the ground running.

Project Gotham Racing is an impressive racing game. While its not quite on the same level as the Gran Turismo series, theyre definitely in the same parking lot. Project Gotham Racings innovative kudos system adds a great deal to the traditional driving game formula, making it so that skill and speed are both factors necessary to win. Consider that with the lush car graphics, the multitude of items to unlock, and the sheer breadth and depth of the game and one can see why Project Gotham Racing has made me reconsider my casual dismissal of the racing game genre. While it hasnt made me a hardcore racing game fan, Project Gotham Racing demonstrates that theres still room for innovation in even the most traditional gaming categories.
GameSpy (Nov 14, 2001)
Bizarre Creations has done a great job at injecting some freshness in a very crowded genre. Project Gotham Racing is definitely different than most racing games on the market and a worthwhile purchase. Between the novel gameplay, tremendous depth, and beautiful cars, this racer really stands apart. If the difficulty level of the latter stages was kinder and the environmental detail greater, it would have been a near-perfect racing game. As it is, it's still a very good one that has eagerly anticipating a sequel.

All in all then, Project Gotham Racing is a well conceived and well realised racing game, not exactly brimming with ideas of it's own, but with a nicely-refined racing style, and a great mixture of cars and tracks (shame more locations weren't used though). The name may be pants, but it's an enjoyable spin, especially in multiplayer mode; when will someone come up with an original racing game though?
The Video Game Critic (Dec 06, 2001)
A well-designed "kudos" system allows you to earn points by driving with style, speed, and skill. It's really fun to watch your points rack up during a good run. You use these points to unlock new tracks and cars. Unlike Gran Turismo 3 (PS2), you won't have to invest an inordinate amount of time to get to the good stuff. The audio is less impressive, and the "radio" tunes didn't really appeal to me. The four-player split-screen mode is smooth and very competitive. Project Gotham is really a very impressive first generation racer for the XBox.
GameSpot (Nov 13, 2001)
At the end of the day, Project Gotham Racing is a unique driving game that pulls off its Tony Hawk approach better than its predecessor, Metropolis Street Racer. The Kudos system would have probably benefited from a longer development period, but the developer wasn't afforded that luxury because of this game's launch status, and while it may be sometimes frustrating, it ultimately ends up being fun. While its unique spin on driving and its scarcity of cars might put people looking for the next Gran Turismo off, anyone who considers themselves a car fan should seriously consider adding Project Gotham Racing to their library of Xbox games.
X-Power (Apr 22, 2002)
This is a shrewd move on the part of Microsoft. Give gamers a title that immediately plays to their need for a racer with depth, but won't be unfathomable to a first-time player. Gobbling up Kudos by catching air, powersliding, and other driving feats is highly addictive.
Overall I had a pretty good time checking out Project Gotham Racing for GiN. I just wish I was a little better at it. My girlfriend Alison repeatedly stomped me into the ground on this game. Fortunately, I was able to return the favor in Dead or Alive 3. I think overall I was most impressed with the visual aspects of Project Gotham Racing, as well as the whole Kudos challenge concept. PGR takes the checkered flag with an impressive 4 GiN Gems.

It would be nice to say Project Gotham is the best driving game I've seen, but it isn't. With Rallisport Challenge available at launch, it probably isn't even the best driving game on the Xbox, but it is a damned fine one irrespective. Devotees of Metropolis Street Racer will lap the game up interminably, and even a hardened GT and Ridge Racer nut like myself found it hard not to be impaled by this Dark Knight's sceptre of entertainment. Admittedly it's not one hundred percent of everything we hoped for; visually, aurally and in terms of gameplay. It's a bit too tough in places, but there is plenty of variation, authenticity and charm to the game, and anything that I can play for four hours straight without a break deserves a glowing accolade.
Gameplanet (Oct 31, 2002)
All in all, this is a very good racer that steps out of the mold of its predecessors. It's different enough to appeal to people who would not normally look twice at a racing car game without being so different as to alienate fans of the genre. Not all ardent race fans are going to dig this one though, so if you go to bed in a flame-retardent racing suit and helmet (f1 duvet included), you might want to rent this one first to be sure it's you.
Game Revolution (Nov, 2001)
Project Gotham's single player experience is split into four gameplay modes - Quick Race, Arcade Race, Time Attack, and Kudos Challenge. Quick Race has you racing against five other cars, Arcade Race sets up a cone obstacle course, and Time Attack pits you against the clock. Kudos Challenge is basically a combination of all other modes and is where you'll spend the most amount of time. Complete challenges, win races, and unlock stuff.
While X-Box fans may have been hoping that Project Gotham Racing would be their system’s Gran Turismo 3, they’ll find something entirely different inside this case when they get home from the store. Instead of a diehard simulation, they’ll instead be treated to a half-arcade, half-sim racer that makes a lot of demands on its players. At first this technique seems fresh, but after a few incredibly disappointing runs down the later tracks you’ll find it more frustrating than satisfying. With a vast selection of tracks and a large selection of cars, there’s plenty of substance to this racer, and the gameplay’s inherently fun premise is a lot less frustrating in a multiplayer environment. As such, this makes a great head-to-head challenge against up to three friends, or a perfect pastime for the obsessive driving perfectionist. If you’re looking for a fun racer or a true sim, however, it’d be best to wait a while before leaping into the streets of Gotham.
