Gaming Age (Jan 04, 2003)
If you haven’t guessed by now, Unreal Championship is what we console fans have been screaming for, for years now. It is online gaming at it’s best, and nothing really compares. You can single handedly blow away your enemies, team up, or whatever, it’s up to you. Oh and if you happen to see “Boogeyman” online…I’m sorry for killing you.
Game Freaks 365 (Apr 19, 2003)
The game is one of many different types of the same thing. Doom and Quake are an example. What makes this game stand out is the action during the gameplay. It is better than any of these games. This is the best of the 3 right now. Any FPS fan will pick this game up because of the great action gameplay. All the physics of a great combat game are in here. The game has a long life because of its Xbox Live play. The game itself doesn't last you long, but beating people you don't know on Xbox Live will keep you playing. This game will keep being played until a better game comes along and steals the spotlight. Load up these weapons because Unreal Championship is coming for you.

Ever since we knew there was going to be online gaming for Xbox we knew there was going to be Unreal Championship. In fact, Infogrames' first person shooter was carrying the hearts of doe-eyed Xbox owners well before MechAssault, Ghost Recon and NBA 2K3 were ever announced because this was the game, we were told, that would make Xbox Live worth having. Several years and countless delays (of Xbox Live, not UC) later, Unreal Championship has arrived as all of that. It doesn't do much beyond its Unreal relatives on PC, but then again matching those efforts on console is quite an accomplishment itself. The built-in fun of online multiplayer gaming through Xbox Live plus a solid, fast-twitch, first person shooter engine are the game's undeniable strengths and make up for some of the game's technical shortcomings.

All in all, whilst Unreal Championship does not benefit from the same subtle complexities as Halo, it is still a very well made, solid game, that fans of the genre will relish. The game play is very simple and arcade-like, which makes for some inspired multiplayer action, even if the single player experience is rather predictable after a time. Looks nice too, and plays more smoothly than a cashmere cod-piece, Xbox Live needs more games like this.

XBox Solution (XBS) (Dec 11, 2002)
Unreal Championship is definitely a must have Xbox Live title for the gamer that’s into first person shooters, offering the best available FPS Live enabled play currently available. The overall presentation is certainly impressive, and the in-game options are too numerous to list. The Unreal series has found a stable home on the Xbox console, offering more maps than were available in the PC version and an exceptional interface, but I’m still a bit hung up on the whole concept of realism. Call me over critical, but the gameplay just seems a bit too unrealistic (no pun intended). There’s no doubt that my last comment will be met with harsh criticism, but the fact remains that Unreal Championship, slightly flawed in subtle aspects, will provide an intense arena for gamers to wreack havoc on their opponents for endless hours to come.
GameZone (Dec 14, 2002)
Unreal Championship is a game that doesn’t pretend to be anything more than a fragger’s fantasy. The developers from Digital Extremes and Epic Games have trimmed off all the fat and concentrated on making the game pure fun.

Gaming Target (Dec 11, 2002)
Graphically speaking, mainly because the lower resolution, Unreal Championship can’t quite hang with it’s PC brethren, Unreal Tournament 2003, but it still looks damn good running on the Xbox. The game is complete with incredible weapon effects, solid character models, and some of the most atmospheric levels I’ve ever seen – these cover a variety of both in-door and out-door environments, with a bevy of different weather and geological effects. To keep things fast when running on and offline, it’s fairly obvious that they had to keep some of the Xbox effects to a minimum, though, you’ll still see the occasional hiccup in the framerate.
GameSpot (Nov 19, 2002)
Unreal Championship is a great game that is filled with action-packed, bloody shootouts that are especially fun online, but it lacks polish in a few spots. The frame rate issues are frequent enough to get in the way, and the laggy network play in higher-capacity games is another unfortunate blemish. It's certainly worth owning and playing, especially for anyone looking for an alternative to MechAssault, but anyone with a PC powerful enough to run Unreal Tournament 2003 would be better served by that installment in the series.
Game Revolution (Jan, 2003)
Unreal Championship begins with the creation of your character from a wide range of choices; everything from chunky men in metal to angry spiky aliens and Egyptians are represented. From there, though, it's all about the fragging.
GameSpy (Dec 05, 2002)
UC is a real breath of fresh air for console FPS design, as much of it's liberated from the PC's Unreal Tournament 2003. That blessing is also a curse in that it defined the developer's approach to the game, and the aforementioned menu system clunkiness and general lack of attention to a single-player game are examples of ways in which this tactic hobbled UC's potential. Still, with the multiplayer game as finely executed as it is, that's a small complaint -- no one derided the PS2's Virtua Fighter 4 for not having a full-fledged adventure mode, because they didn't expect it. The same that can be said of a brilliant fighter like that applies to a multiplayer-driven FPS. UC might not be quite of the same class of game as that impeccable gem, but it's more than solid -- it's inspired. Anyone who wants to test their mettle in the online arena should dive in headfirst.
80 (UK) (Nov 07, 2002)
In conclusion, Unreal Championship is a great companion to those who've had their fill of Halo. It's by no means anything remotely original, borrowing almost all of its ideas from a three year old PC game, but in terms of console fragfoolery, it's up there with the best of them for visual splendour and all out intense action - and once it goes Live we can see a compelling reason to own it. It doesn't have the all round appeal of TimeSplitters 2, and can't compete with Halo for the lone player, but for refined hardcore shooting action and the prospect of online play, there's much to admire. PC owners, however, should stick to UT 2003.
Games TM (Dec, 2002)
The only negative points we noticed were some annoying kill taunts (which can thankfully be turned off) and a little slowdown on some of the larger levels. These are minor gripes, however, and not enough to detract from the experience. In fact, any other shooter will be hard pressed to land a head shot on Unreal Championship any time soon.
GamePro (US) (Nov 27, 2002)
Unreal Championship is designed with multiplayer foremost in mind, meaning there’s a wide selection of thoughtfully designed arenas and stages tailor-made for their specific game types. UC’s deathmatch modes are a bit less tactical and a lot more fragtical than Halo’s. The weapons are messier than Master Chief’s, but the selection is more well balanced there isn’t really a loser among them, nor is there a clear superweapon you’ll constantly want to sling at your side. The Lightning Gun (UC’s answer to the traditional sniper rifle), for example, doesn’t pack nearly the punch nor give you nearly the precision of the rifle in Halo.

Like Halo, this is benchmark game for the X-Box Live system, yet bring it home and it does have its flaws. If you need a spare to fill 30 minutes of frag-tastic mindless mayhem then is certainly a worthy solider to the cause.
