This genre is crowded, and while Call of Duty and Halo may grab the headlines and sales, Bad Company 2 is a nice alternative to the hectic run-and-gun style of Call of Duty and shielded opponents of Halo: Reach. EA is still continuing support with a new pack recently released and a full expansion called Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam. Innovation is what keeps this genre alive and flourishing. DICE studios has done a great job adding new ideas and concepts to the console FPS genre -- it makes some of the changes brought on by the competition seem amateur in comparison. The are many virtual wars to fight, and many virtual opponents to shoot, but Bad Company 2 makes it worth your time to enlist in this crowed FPS market.

Bad Company 2's masterful execution in both its multiplayer and single-player aspects means that the brazen fun it pokes at its closest competitors (Haggard complains about the Army sending in "pussy-ass guys with heartbeat sensors on their guns" for instance) is more than justifiable. DICE's sequel is a superlative FPS, let down only by odd inconsistencies in the destruction (why can we destroy a water tower but not a windmill? How come I can destroy external walls but not internal walls?) and limited customisation options in multiplayer. These minor shortcomings aside however, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is pure gaming gold and as such has more than a fair shout in eclipsing Modern Warfare 2.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is quite simply a superb package, with neither single-player nor online feeling like it's been given short shrift. They come together in the most robust, nuanced and carefully crafted game of its type this hardware generation. Modern Warfare is the obvious benchmark, and Bad Company 2 meets and even passes it with ease. But it's the high bar it sets for a genre mired in complacency that makes it so invigorating.

Bad Company 2 is a fantastic game, the single player is over far too quickly but by the standard of other shooter stories it's a fair length on the tougher difficulties. But the main crux of the game is the multiplayer and it excels on every level, it's a worthy adversary to Modern Warfare and both have their place with different types of online experiences. Its one I'll be playing for a long time!
XboxAchievements (Mar 10, 2010)
Bad Company 2 took the solid foundations of the original and built a skyscraper on it. Improving in pretty much every discipline, the sequel boasts a much more robust and comprehensive set of online tools, a pretty engaging campaign and one of the most immersive battlefields in the history of consoles. The online may be stacked in favour of the regular and dedicated whilst alienating newcomers, but it’s a game worth investing the time into. What makes the sequel is definitely the tweaks though; the stuff that the original didn’t deliver on, but thankfully, the sequel delivers in spades.

Sure, a number of minor things got under my skin (some painfully spread-out checkpoints, crappy multiplayer unlocks, and a few bad online spawn points), but they'll scarcely prevent it from marching into the homes of millions of people for me to blow up. It's kind of like DICE has trained for a game development biathlon, resulting in its first game where the single-player mode is just as good as the multiplayer -- and that says DICE has what it takes to be among the best in the business. In times when "modern" is the word-of-the-day for military-themed shooters, Bad Company 2 proves you don't need to stand at the top of the medal podium -- you simply blow it to goddamn smithereens.
Thunderbolt Games (Mar 13, 2010)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 thrives on these moments of war-torn chaos. Its brand of epic, large scale, squad based multiplayer is rarely seen on consoles, taking what was great about the original Bad Company and Battlefield 1943 and refining it with a substantial amount of engaging game types and phenomenal map design to create one of the best multiplayer experiences available. The single player is a bit of a letdown as it’s obvious DICE spent the majority of their time working on the online, but the core gameplay is enjoyable enough and the characters memorable enough that it’s worth one playthrough, at least. The overall package might not topple Modern Warfare 2’s throne, but the multiplayer might have just surpassed it. Competition is always healthy.
GameSpot (Mar 03, 2010)
With all the different classes, vehicles, and stationary weapons (like heavy machine guns and mounted rocket launchers) at play, there is a dazzling array of ways to wage war. These tools, coupled with the threat and promise of destructibility, make Bad Company 2's battlefields uniquely chaotic and electrifyingly fun. The action is top-notch in both campaign and multiplayer alike. Whether or not you're looking for a new shooter in your life, you owe it to yourself to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Giant Bomb (Mar 03, 2010)
Bad Company 2 is a terrific multiplayer shooter that offers the scope and strategy that made the Battlefield series so great in the first place. The single-player, however, feels a little flat this time around.
Xbox Gazette (Dec 06, 2010)
Blend Games (Mar 06, 2010)
Bad Company 2 continues the Battlefield series' tradition of excellence in multiplayer action. DICE really needs to re-think their approach to single-player, though. The campaign fails to prepare players for the online experience and what's more, it fails to entertain. Perhaps Bad Company 3 will have a single-player mode that succeeds on those fronts but DICE might be better off just throwing all their energy into making the multiplayer as good as it can be. The multiplayer is clearly the star of the show here.
