Gamer Limit (Feb 01, 2011)
Overall, Ascension feels like a perfect blend of old and new, making it a must play for zombie fans. If you don’t play Zombies, this does nothing to sweeten the deal, but considering this is probably the most accessible map yet, it’s worth a try.

Treyarch should be commended for creating such a quality DLC release and even though I was a naysayer on downloadable content, I'm a changed gamer because this release is worth every penny. As Call of Duty: Black Ops features great graphics, strong gameplay and almost perfect multiplayer options, this add-on is a must to players who enjoy their world of online multiplayer, not to mention zombies.

Still, if you like Black Ops - and I assume you do, to be honest - then First Strike will quickly get its hooks into you. Right now I'm playing it in the mornings before work, trying to prestige before the Double XP weekend starts. Feel free to leave your vitriol in the comments below, angry internet people, but no matter how loud you shout you'll always be drowned out by the unstoppable drone of the masses.

All in all, it’s a fairly decent map pack that provides some interesting new elements and arenas to cause carnage in. The addition of interactive map elements in Discovery and Kowloon could serve as a taster for what Treyarch may cook up in the future. For now, these maps serve as a healthy injection of life into the playlists, which may stop people constantly voting for Firing Range every time and quitting when they don’t get their way.

Now, is it all worth 1200msp? It’s hard to say. If you are a Black Ops nut, then I’m sure you will get your money’s worth. If you are the sort of person who just dips in and out of Black Ops, you might be better served by waiting for the pack to go on sale in a few months time. What I can say is that it is definitely better than the first MW2 map pack, as all 5 maps are new instead of having some of them recycled! Treyarch seems to have worked hard on these, and I look forward to the next pack.

First Strike, then, is a well-balanced collection of different styles of map, its highlights undoubtedly favouring those who tend to play away from Free For All and Team Death Match. Cynics would say it's weighted a little too heavily on gimmicks and point at the price tag and guffaw but, as discussed earlier, my future brother-in-law Dave won't give a space monkey. This is a fine addition to one of the only games he plays, and plays religiously, and he won't think twice about forking out the equivalent of a tenner for it. Once, of course, he's called me to find out what MS Points are and I've called him a moron.

Overall, the maps are all good to decent. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some of the faults of the pack. For one thing, I found myself running into a lot of invisible walls. It almost seemed as if some things were put into the game to say “hey, look where you can’t go”. Now normally this would seem like a minor gripe, except that these walls aren’t always necessarily just on the outside of a map. That gripe aside, I think the map pack offered a nice variety of play.
