Dark Souls is not for everyone; in fact, it's probably not for most people. That's fine. For the rest of us, it's a game that can exist without hype, hyperbole, or the grasping hands of marketing. It's a game for gamers, a game that brings back the core pillars of gameplay from long ago dressed in the latest and greatest technology that modern gaming has to offer. It is a game that one can spend hours in and still not scratch the surface. It is a game that, above all else, serves as an experience that shows the world that imagination, the sense of challenge and discovery, is not dead, and that no matter how casual or mainstream games become, the heart of gaming, the essence, the very soul of why we game, is still alive and burning white-hot. Even if that flame is buried under 90 hours of darkness, despair, and overwhelming challenges.

Dark Souls gets the score it does because it's devilish, brave, bold and fantastic in its design. Understand that. Just know that this is not an experience for everyone. Those with the mettle are in for a hell of a ride, though.

If you can get past the steep curve, know the game will challenge you like nothing you have ever played before, know that you're going to die numerous times and prepare yourself for that eventuality. Dark Souls is a refreshing take on fantasy RPGs and most of all its fun and addictive. You will relish every victory no matter how minor and you will learn from every mistake. It is a game that is worthy of high praise because it's a game that treats you as an adult. Dark Souls (to me) is harder and more rewarding than the previous game and that makes it oddly more appealing. It is also self-contained so you don't need to play the previous game to get the best out of Dark Souls. You will of course be far more familiar with the way combat works if you do.

Dark Souls is going to be a polarizing game, and it knows it. If you're willing to approach it and learn its ins and outs, its one of the most rewarding and enjoyable titles out right now.

Dark Souls could prove to be gaming Marmite for some players, who'll either love it or hate it. Dark Souls makes no bones about being unrelenting in its difficulty though, although it's by no means insurmountable. It's a rare game that's unlike anything else, refusing to pander or compromise in any way, shape or form. In this day and age, Dark Souls is hugely refreshing then, and well worth the time and effort.

Dark Souls offers a vast and mysterious game world, beautifully crafted and filled with magic and wonder at every turn. It offers a level of challenge that is missing from most games, inviting you to explore and discover its secrets for yourself. The mixture of RPG, action and subtle multiplayer elements is truly sublime, and is a great example of how to incorporate multiplayer features into a largely single player experience. Whilst Dark Souls may not be for everyone, if you wish to immerse yourself completely in a deeply personal adventure, and accept the challenges it throws at you, then you should embrace it with open arms.

Dark Souls is a wonderful, if sometimes frustrating experience that will capture the imagination and heart of any player that manages to wade through the hostile introduction and overwhelming difficulty. It is a game that goes on to offer players an incredible experience filled with deep combat, in a fantastical world inhabited by fascinating NPCs and fiendish enemies. A definite purchase for those who enjoy a challenge, Dark Souls is an amazing, addictive experience that will immerse, overwhelm and entertain.
Dark Souls is without question a punishing experience, but it is also equally rewarding. That feeling of isolation, fear and desperation never seems to disappear as it manages to test even your mental toughness. Dark Souls is not a game for everyone and is truly meant for those fans of ‘Demons Souls’ or for gamers looking for one hell of a difficult gaming experience. The developers were not kidding when they told you to “prepare to die”.
