Gamer 2.0 (Jul 02, 2007)
The Darkness isn’t all that long and clocks in at about 10 hours, but it feels fresh the entire way through and doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s one of the most ambitious and impressive games we’ve played so far this year and hopefully when all the big juggernauts come out this Fall we won’t see this one get pushed to the side. The Darkness is first rate in every way and surely will be enjoyed by fans of any type of action game. Assuming you’re mature enough to handle the violent subject content, you should give this game a shot as it may end up being one of your favorite games of the new generation. It’s certainly one of ours.

The bottom line with The Darkness is that it pushes the stilted FPS genre in a direction not often associated with mindless run and gun action. The seamless integration of brilliant performances, staggering character animation and near photo-realistic presentation only serve to enhance impressive white-knuckle action gameplay and a truly creepy yet compelling pseudo RPG storyline. The Darkness grips from the off and never comes close to letting go until the satisfyingly comic book payoff slides elegantly into the closing credit roll. It may be covered in blood and certainly not for the faint hearted or weak bowelled, but The Darkness is a bona fide class act... who said gaming's summer months never offer anything of worth?

When it comes down to it, I have not been a huge fan of FPS games on consoles, but The Darkness really appealed to me. The game is just so damned cool and so different than the norm in enough aspects that it offers stuff you really don't find enough of in the FPS genre regardless of platform, such as some really unique gameplay mechanisms and a refreshing change in perspective from a storyline point of view. This game is not "just another FPS", and while some of the risks it takes don't work out as great as they could have, what you ultimately have here is a different and daring take on a genre which has become a tad stale in recent times, and developers Starbreeze and publisher 2KGames should be commended for it. Simply put, The Darkness is an absolute must have if you want some action packed FPS fun without sacrificing innovation and creativity.

In every generation of gaming, a title comes along to remind us, once and for all, that story is premium. With this new generation of super consoles on the market, we've all managed to focus on the aspect of graphics alone, being inundated with swanky looking titles that are hip in the graphics department, but lacking when it comes to delivering a real punch in the story department . When you hear gamer's (sic) talk about the latest titles on the market, one of the first things people ask about are the visuals! I mean, it seems we never hear people ask about the game play or even bring up how coherent the story is. Thankfully Starbreeze, creators of the surprise hit Riddick on the original Xbox, are back to remind us all that while pretty graphics bring you to the table, it's story and presentation that makes you stay for the meal.

The Darkness is without doubt the best FPS on the Xbox 360. It may also be one of the best narratives on any system, with truly fantastic voice acting. Not since Half-Life 2 have gamers been so drawn into a world, and so emotionally invested in its characters. Couple this with outrageous action and fantastic atmosphere, and you have one of the most brilliant and unique single-player experiences. If you like shooters, you should own this game. Here's hoping Starbreeze have the means and drive to deliver an even better sequel.

games xtreme (Jul 06, 2007)
All in all the Darkness is a step in the right direction, if Starbreeze removed the multiplayer and added more story it would be a really top-notch game. But against the likes of Riddick it still falls a bit short, not even Mike's creepy Darkness portrayal and demonic overtones can save it from the cruddy Darkling AI. The AI in general is passable except for those little buggers, who end up acting like tools rather than being tools the player can use to help them accomplish a mission.

The Darkness is the kind of shooter that I enjoy. It is built around more than just shooting. It gives you a wide range of powers with which to play. It gives you people to interact with. It gives you a story that is worth caring about. And it makes you feel as if you are The Darkness itself. However, because of the relative brevity of its content, some basic bugs and flaws that are still present, and the minor annoyances of the controls of Jackie’s powers, it is far from perfect. However, this is pretty much a must play shooter, if not quite the classic I was hoping for.
The game some minor flaws, but overall it is one of the best FPS games released in the last year or so. You’ll probably have fond memories of events in the game years from now!

XboxAchievements (Jul 01, 2007)
Great single player experience that has a distinct and unique feel to it. Talk about making an FPS stand out from the pack, Starbreeze nails that with the Darkness’ powers. Pity about the multiplayer, but the single player experience must be experienced, whether you rent or buy, you won't regret it.

Danke Starbreeze!

The true star of The Darkness is the overall presentation. It’s wonderfully voice-acted (especially Faith No More lead singer Mike Patton providing the voice of the Darkness), and it’s hard to find games with a more cinematic feel than this. There are countless moments where you really feel like you’re in a movie, and this does wonders in terms of making the game more immersive. It reminds me of Prey in many ways. The gameplay is competent yet unremarkable, but the presentation makes the experience a highly entertaining one.

After Chronicles of Riddick this is again a very qualitative title that’s more than worth to wear the name of a license. The story, the surprising powers and fun Darklings, the grimm and adult atmosphere and some welcome innovations are a fresh wind through the genre. Starbreeze Studios again succeeds in showing why they’ve got such a good reputation and we’re already looking forward to seeing more from this developer.
Gamers Europe (Jul 19, 2007)
It might sound simple to make sure that an action- and character-driven game has got a lot of action and good characters, but it's amazing how often the basics get ignored in favour of a flashy gimmick. The Darkness, however, is solid from the ground up and very worthy of your attention; it takes the key elements of the genre and polishes them until they gleam, whilst adding a few new and well-realised ideas to the mix, all the while ensuring your attention is held with its excellent storywork. Just don't blame me if all the raw hearts you eat end up giving you indigestion.
The Darkness doesn’t succeed because of the gunplay, the powers, the characters, or the story. I don’t think anyone will tell you with a straight face that it’s a first-person shooter of any measure; though certainly serviceable, it’s far from being on par with a Call of Duty 2 or Rainbow 6: Vegas. The powers go from being underwhelming to overpowering shortly, and the characters are about as typical as the story. No, The Darkness succeeds because all of the elements intertwine so well: the gunplay is good for what it’s needed to be; the powers ramp up and become strong because the darkness is getting too powerful to control; the characters manage to squeeze out a bit of personality in the middle of the often hammy dialogue; and the story takes the kinds of twists and turns that you would expect and want from a game featuring a possessed protagonist.
GameSpot (Jun 27, 2007)
The Darkness' appeal comes from its many different parts coming together in a really great way. The believability of the characters mixed with this hellacious demonic force fits together in a really interesting fashion; the gameplay is very satisfying, even if it isn't especially challenging; and the presentation is top-notch.
The Darkness, it’s a tough sell. A 10-hour storyline (15 hours at most) means that you’ll be spending more than $6 an hour with Jackie Estacado. Still, The Darkness is worth its weight. It is this summer’s Prey, and if some of you remember, Prey earned accolades for its innovative, topsy-turvy portal action and interesting mix of styles. The Darkness does almost the exact same thing, minus the portals but with an infinite amount more of the number of heart-eating, wicked-eyed tentacles. Check it out, at least give it a rental.
XBox Front (Aug 31, 2007)

The story of Jackie Estacado is a short but excellent one, and this game will eventually be remembered as yet another overlooked title once the fall cornucopia of games parade in. However, if you are looking for an excellent story and some awesome gunplay, the Darkness is a must try. Just don't turn the lights off.

In a year absolutely crammed with interesting-looking first-person shooters, you've got to come up with a game of extraordinary quality to rise above the competition. The Darkness has come along at simultaneously the best- and worst-possible time: on the one hand, it has arrived before it risked being drowned out in a fiercely competitive market, full of games claiming to be the Next Big Thing; on the other, it might well suffer from people holding off for what else is coming out. For what it's worth, I'd concur with Rob and suggest that any fan of first-person shooters needs to play this game, even though the occasional duff level, and the slightly pedestrian AI disrupts the quality at times. Once The Darkness gets its tentacles around you, resistance is futile.
GameSpy (Jul 02, 2007)
All that said, we love The Darkness and can easily recommend it to mature gamers everywhere as the definitive horror game of 2007. It's the closest thing we've seen to an HD-gen Silent Hill, except that in The Darkness you get to play as that venerable franchise's ultimate evil monstrosity, Pyramid Head, clothed in the flesh of a mafia hit man. It is highly unlikely that anyone that picks this game up will be disappointed with it, unless they are operating on the mistaken impression that there is a decent multiplayer game too.
Retrogaming History (Nov 08, 2009)
Games TM (Jul, 2007)
The Darkness is an artistic and technical achievement, and the perfect antidote to the so-called summer drought. Mark up another win for the Starbreeze team.
PlayDevil (Oct 01, 2007)
In the end, "The Darkness" is all and all a good game. The visuals are nice, the gameplay is unique and refreshing, and the story is engrossing and very well done. The only two things that hamper the game is the short campaign (around ten hours), and the horribly implemented multiplayer. Though with these two issues "The Darkness" is still a very good game as one would only expect from Starbreeze. Hopefully there will be sequels to this game, for this series has a chance to become a superb game franchise if Starbreeze fixes some of the issues in the next installments.
Game Positive (Jul 13, 2007)
In The Darkness, players are treated to an interesting story, riveting game play, superb visuals, and fantastic sound design. Although the sheer lack of multiplayer quality is immediately apparent and the uninspired AI provides mostly frustration rather than a challenge, the single-player campaign is remarkable enough to merit this game a glowing recommendation. Despite its flaws, The Darkness proves that it is still possible to stand out from the shadows.

The Video Game Critic (Jul 25, 2007)
This Xbox 360 version is superior to its PS3 cousin, thanks to its effective vibration feature and load screens that are completely disguised (no meters). The Darkness held my attention like few first-person shooters can, with an edgy brand of demonic carnage you just don't see everyday.
Gamezine (Jul 24, 2007)
GamePro (US) (Jun 25, 2007)
The last thing you can say about The Darkness is that it's just like every other first-person shooter. Based on the comic book series by Top Cow Productions, it's a refreshing change of pace in a genre marked by copy-cat design and been-there-done-that gameplay.
FiringSquad (Jul 02, 2007)
The Darkness has a great visual look to it and the supernatural powers you get to use are fun for a bit but ultimately it gets to be a grind to get to the game's final moments thanks to the long load times and the repetitive gameplay aspects. Multiplayer is uninspired with the exception of playing as a Darkling. Overall this long awaited title falls a bit short of its goal of being an effective horror themed action game. If you want to play a game that combines these aspects well, play F.E.A.R. or the Max Payne titles again.
FZ (Jun 30, 2007)
Computer Bild Spiele (Sep 05, 2007)
