GameSpy (Oct 14, 2008)
Integrating some nice variety into one game while maintaining its decidedly action-oriented dynamics, Dead Space is appealing across a wide cross-section of gameplay styles. Wrap an engrossing plot that is a veritable warren of intermingling themes around this and you've got a game that is basically a guaranteed experience. Dead Space is a solid realization of several of our favorite gameplay mechanics in a way that we've only seen in blockbusters like BioShock, Half-Life and Resident Evil 4. Its quality is undeniable and we have no reservation in recommending its potent mix of panic-inducing plotline, furious action and deep customization.
Deeko (Oct 24, 2008)
Dead Space continues the charge for the new EA and in the process has turned out to be one of the most surprising titles of the year. Frightening as hell, visually stunning and a shining example of what a development team can produce with time and love; Dead Space deserves a special place in any horror fan's game library. While not for the squeamish or those just looking to wade into the survival horror pool, Dead Space is a tour de force for fans of the genre and a new highpoint for EA's internal studios.
Game Chronicles (Oct 29, 2008)
Dead Space is a must own title for anyone who loves science fiction, horror, or any combination of the two. When you combine those elements with such amazing gameplay and stylish design you easily have the makings of a Game of the Year contender. It’s got my vote.
ZTGameDomain (Oct 15, 2008)
Dead Space is the type of game that people will talk about five years from now about just how good it really was. The experience itself is more than worth the price of admission and when you throw in the fact that the game executes nearly flawlessly on so many levels it is hard not to recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good horror/action title. There are very few games that capture your imagination and immerse you into the experience as well as Dead Space does and for that I have already tapped it as one of my top five for the year and strong candidate for game of the year. If you have even the slightest interest in the genre you owe it to yourself to play Dead Space.
Atomic Gamer (Oct 18, 2008)
With the heavy-hitting holiday season just beginning, I didn’t expect to have already experienced something this good. It may be slightly premature, seeing we have so many big titles coming down the pike the next couple of months, but right now Dead Space easily grabs my top spot for game of the season. Amazingly atmospheric visuals and mood-setting sound work are complemented by some of the goriest and original creature creations I’ve seen in a while (and I just recently played through Silent Hill: Homecoming, a title that’s tough to top in the “bizarre monsters” category). All this would be enough to make for a stellar survival horror romp, but toss in a truly engaging, twist-heavy story with some surprising emotional weight, and you’ve got a franchise with a future that all others in the genre should be worried about.
Extreme Gamer (Oct 30, 2008)
So with all this to say Dead Space is a definite addition to any library. Consider it to be a mix between Bioshock and Gears of War with a few additions. The dismemberment system will make sure there’s plenty of ways for you to kill enemies. So if you’re looking for a new game to add to your library and hold you over until Gears of War 2 then head down to your local gaming store and pick it up.
AusGamers (Oct 29, 2008)
Dead Space is the future of the survival horror game, and while I was very much looking forward to Resident Evil 5, I truly think its throwback design to Resident Evil 4 is going to keep it just under this amazing title; which while borrowing so much from so many great game, works diligently to not only advance the borrowed features, but create an experience with absolute synergy and forethought. No one element absolutely stands out over another, and as such you'll feel Dead Space is that rare breed of game (in this day and age) that doesn't feel rushed, but instead wholly realised. The only thing I can see turning people away from this is if you don't like sci fi, horror or single-player games.
Kombo.com (Oct 16, 2008)
Dead Space is a potent combination of visceral glee and intense terror. The atmosphere is palpable, the combat is exciting and fun, the presentation values are off the chart, and even the narrative is top notch. EA's first survival horror titles is fine example of what can happen when you let a team of talented individuals work on a project that they're genuinely passionate about. This is the next generation of survival horror. Let's see if Resident Evil 5 can keep up.
Console Monster (Nov 01, 2008)
In closing, Dead Space is a fantastic addition to the Survival Horror Genre with its fantastic graphics, immense sound, and amazingly detailed story, Dead Space isn’t being blown out of orbit just yet and with talks of Dead Space 2, the only way from here, is Outer Space!
GamingExcellence (Nov 13, 2008)
Dead Space is a scary, intense, engrossing, and invigorating adventure into the heart of deep space. EA Redwood has produced EA’s finest title in years and their best original IP since the glory days of Road Rash and Desert Strike on the Sega Genesis. Just don’t hold it against EA for not including an extra pair of boxer shorts in the box. They had to draw the line somewhere. Now if only we could do something about that bitchy Karma.
Dead Space on pakko-ostos kauhun, etenkin avaruuskauhun, ystäville. Herkkien ihmisten on syytä varautua yöllisiin painajaisiin ja pelin kesken lopettamiseen. Vaikka pelin juoni ei sieltä yllättävimmästä päästä olekaan, on Ishimuran salaisuuksien tutkiminen ja pelissä eteneminen viihdyttävää aina haparoivista ensiaskelista alkaen.
Cheat Code Central (Oct, 2008)
Dead Space is a masterful title that is sure to scare the crap out of you. Plus, there are three modes of difficulty, so this is an experience that casual and hardcore gamers alike simply cannot miss. This is a highly polished and well-crafted title that transcends standard video gaming. Simply put, it is one of the best games I've ever played.
Planet Xbox 360 (Nov 10, 2008)
The creature design is solid. Even if they are all really just blood-stained cousins, they each have unique attacks and quirks to watch for. Some of the more robust enemies even spew smaller creatures, which either scurry towards you or fire projectiles. The simple neon-blue line that pops up, by clicking the right-stick, to point you toward your current objective is a nice touch that keeps you from getting lost in the twisty corridors. Dead Space is essentially your opportunity to play through a sci-fi horror flick; which is just about every gamer’s fantasy. It is a near-perfect package for those looking for to get their survival horror fix.
PGNx Media (Oct 23, 2008)
Dead Space shows the beginnings of a very strong franchise. EA Redwood Shores nailed the genre with Dead Space. On one hand, you have a very violent and gory game with tons of action. On the other, you have a fulfilling and well-told story with plenty of plot twists. Holding them together is a superb atmosphere that truly immerses you into this world. Essentially, you’re looking at a must-have.
Game Informer Magazine (Nov, 2008)
Dead Space is technically a survival horror game but it should really be compared to motion picture juggernauts The Thing and Aliens, as it channels the essence of those films more than it does any other game. If horror is your forte, dim the lights, crank up the surround sound, and take the deepest breath you ever have. I think you'll agree, no game has ever been this frightening.
XboxAchievements (Oct 16, 2008)
Dead Space represents the current pinnacle of evolution in the survival-horror genre, taking everything that has worked, and nothing else. The great combat system is paired up with tight controls, while superb graphics, audio, and storytelling will keep players rapt from beginning to end. Horror fans will have a blast with this game.
Da Gameboyz (Oct, 2008)
If you are a fan of spooky sci-fi horrors and have previously enjoyed games such as Bioshock, Doom or Resident Evil, then Dead Space for the Xbox 360 should be right up your alley. The presentation and visuals are stunning while the audio is so good that it may very well give you nightmares. The gameplay offers up lots of variety and slicing off enemy body parts has never been so satisfying. At the end of the day Dead Space is a solid purchase for Xbox 360 owners and I really think that it stands as one of the best in its class and may be one of the best games we will play in 2008.
Wonderwallweb.com (Oct 22, 2008)
I am a huge fan of horror films like the Alien series and Event Horizon and this game makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Dead Space has done to space horror what Resident Evil done to zombie flicks, this is really a great horror game and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
411mania.com (Nov 11, 2008)
Dead Space is a winner. Though we’ve played plenty of survival horror games, there’s plenty of things in the game that make the experience seem very fresh. The design is top notch, the story enthralling and the setting and mood is exceptional. Kudos to EA for taking a chance on a new IP and one that appears to be garnering critical acclaim. Simply put, Dead Space is a definite buy!
Gamers.at (Nov 12, 2008)
Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Oct 13, 2008)
By rigidly copying Resi's model and only ever daring to step outside the template a handful of times Dead Space isn't quite as accomplished as Capcom's classic, but its quest to reach for the stars should still be viewed as proof that EA's recent ambition to produce new IP's is the company's greatest decision in years.
Gamer 2.0 (Oct 14, 2008)
Overall, Dead Space is an extraordinary game with tons of shock value and action to whet any fan's appetite for some time, and with a campaign that lasts a steady 10-12 hours, that’s plenty of time to get lost aboard the Ishimura. While the missions could have been a bit more fleshed out and a multiplayer component would have been welcome, the overall execution of the game is one of the highest quality; a factor that will help it lead this year’s Game of the Year honors.
Game Shark (Oct 21, 2008)
Dead Space is most frightening when you’re backed into a corner and fighting for your life in the darkness, and absolutely awe-inspiring during the quiet moments of solitude. From major elements like the HUD-less display and the believably intricate machinery to the simplicity of a forgotten magazine, the attention to detail is absolutely staggering. The heavily scripted encounters and linear story mean that it is only good for one time through, but it’s an experience that will stick with you for years to come.
Gaming Age (Oct 14, 2008)
In the end, I can say there will only be a handful of gamer types who won't appreciate what Dead Space has to offer. Either you don't like horror games/movies, you want multiplayer action, or you have no inner kid in you that allows you to be scared and let your imagination run away with you. If you meet any of these above criteria, you won't "get" Dead Space. That being said, this is the most fun I've had being scared in a video game since I first encountered the 'dog scene' in Resident Evil. The game is very pretty, draws you in with it's sound, atmosphere, and story, plays wonderfully, and is diverse enough from chapter to chapter where you feel like you are not playing similar missions (like Assassin's Creed). I can't recommend Dead Space enough; it is already up for my GOTY vote, and with a crowded line up of games coming soon, that is a bold statement.
Game Revolution (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space bursts into the holiday season with the pulpy cracking sound of someone being torn limb from limb. Its visual presentation, unique gameplay features, and emphasis on exploration show that this title’s coming into the ring swinging hard and will be a tough contender to beat. It’s an ambitious title that does so much right that it’s easy to overlook its shortcomings. Anyone who suspected that Dead Space might be just another also-ran shooter this season was dead wrong.
ActionTrip (Oct 27, 2008)
Dead Space is a result of creative thinking. It's doesn't revolutionize gaming as we know it. It takes advantage of familiar gameplay mechanics set by other survival horror titles. The combat is dynamic and rarely gets old during the entire campaign. There are enough scary moments to warrant a good time for horror enthusiasts. Fans of 3rd person action games should enjoy the cool weapons and tools on offer, as well as the diversity of enemies. The AI, unlike many recent releases, works very well and is extremely persistent in tearing Isaac's body to shreds before letting him to escape. It's a solid challenge altogether, throwing a few interesting boss fights into the mix as well.
3D Juegos (Oct 24, 2008)
HonestGamers (Staff reviews only) (Jun 20, 2010)
Nothing’s ever real enough to touch in Dead Space. Its an adventure on unfamiliar grounds, mixing horrific death with zero-g and velvet black vacuums. EA’s not so much invested a lot of time and effort into one single game but, in fact, a franchise of Clarke/Lovecraftian inspired madness. Pity poor Isaac as he walks alone through corridors overrunning with decay and death. Pity him, because his next step might be his last.
games xtreme (Oct 24, 2008)
Dead Space is more disturbing than scary, it delivers the same kind of feel that Doom 3 managed combined with a little bit of System Shock and Resident Evil. It's a great 3rd person Survival Horror game with some shooter elements crafted in.
GamesCollection (Jan 08, 2010)
GamesRadar (Oct 14, 2008)
The very fact that we wish Dead Space included more of its original features and less content pulled from the last generation’s greatest game speaks volumes for the quality on show. By rigidly copying Resident Evil’s model and only ever daring to step outside the template a handful of times Dead Space isn’t quite as accomplished as Capcom’s classic, but its quest to reach for the stars should still be viewed as proof that EA’s recent ambition to produce new IP’s is the company’s greatest decision in years. Isaac almost stands shoulder to shoulder with Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield; slightly singed and worse for wear, we admit, but among such lofty company second place is nothing to be ashamed of.
GameLemon (Mar 26, 2009)
So go on and buy it. Because if you learn from Isaac Clarke's example, and all of a sudden monsters from a strange alien dimension eat your neighbor's cat and piss in your teacup, you'll be able to ruin their shit in a heartbeat.
GamersHell.com (Nov 19, 2008)
While it's not perfect—item management, and control issues with trying to aim asteroid-destroying cannons, are just a few nitpicks—Dead Space is certainly one of the most solid, satisfying games of the year. Entertaining and scary elements make up a game that is familiar in its theme and within its genre, but it's also a title that has destructive weaponry, a necessity for skilled gunplay, and zero-G believability.
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault) (Nov 21, 2008)
While Dead Space doesn’t fully reinvent the survival horror genre, it does take familiar elements and cobble them together to create a new and exciting game that has a lot of potential. The Resident Evil series reinvented itself in its fourth installment, and Dead Space takes its cue from what worked in that title, adds its own flavoring and actually throws a shout back to the game-design choices of the original RE to create a survival horror game that should not be missed. This is one of the most engaging titles of the year, a scary and exciting thrill ride that takes us to some familiar destinations, but always finds new and exciting ways through which to view them.
GBase - The Gamer's Base (Nov 14, 2008)
Game Watcher (Oct 31, 2008)
There is so much in Dead Space to mention that doing so would make this review very, very long. Puzzles using Kinesis and Stasis, timed events in airless zones, spacewalks across an asteroid-ridden hull, enough enemies to never leave players comfortable. If not for the submissive, cliché’d last two hours of the story and the un-dramatic terror-inducing scenes, Dead Space would be a rich, enthusiastic game for anyone to enjoy. Yes, its over-dramatized sound may startle the neighbors, but with so much packed into one game, missing it would be much, much scarier.
GamesAreFun.com (GAF) (Nov 05, 2008)
Dead Space is definitely worth the price of admission. Its atmospheric setting, brutal and gory combat, insanely good graphics and sound, well thought out story and the ability to kick babies (no lie) make Dead Space a game well worth checking out this Halloween season. Don't expect to be scared out of your wits, but do expect to have a good time playing it.
MS Xbox World (Nov 02, 2008)
EA Redwood Shore has done an amazing job of not only introducing a whole new IP, but blending genres together to create something that’s really unique. The game feels like a big budget Hollywood horror movie, while still packing the punch of an action shooter. There really aren't very many titles like Dead Space out there, making it stand out among a sea of titles that are all very similar to each other and titles that have come before. Kudos to EA for taking a chance and bringing to gamers one of the must play titles of this fall season. Dead Space is a game you definitely are not going to want to miss.
Xboxdynasty (XD) (Nov 07, 2008)
Gamernode (Nov 03, 2008)
While Dead Space doesn't do anything unique other than the focus on dismemberment and the seamless HUD and inventory pages, it doesn't need to. Rather than spend their time crafting new, innovative ideas, the developers behind the game figured out which already-used elements from sci-fi film and gaming would work best together, and then try it out on you. The result is a game which feels startlingly familiar, but ultimately new at the same time. Playing Dead Space is an experience which shouldn't be missed, and one which won't soon be forgotten.
Gamestyle (Nov, 2008)
We’re entering the final stages of the year now with the big hitters and game of the year contenders being unleashed. Dead Space certainly fits in the latter category. A fantastic horror experience from beginning to end, leaving you no time to catch your breath.
Game Vortex (Oct, 2008)
Even though Dead Space isn't the scariest game I've played (I'm convinced that title will forever remain with Fatal Frame 2), it is still a great action game and well worth your time and money.
Jolt (UK) (Oct 27, 2008)
When all is said and done, Dead Space is a very enjoyable and satisfyingly lengthy survival horror with brilliantly immersive sci-fi elements. Whether borrowed, reworked or completely original, all the elements have been expertly crafted and put together. There’s a slight sense of uncertainty in relation to the game’s levels of realism, at times making sacrifices for the sake of it and at others disregarding it completely, but this is a minor quibble about one of the best survival horror games and most compelling sci-fi games of the current generation.
Boomtown (Oct 24, 2008)
While the plot takes a few expected (and unexpected) turns, with plotlines touching on current affairs, it is a shame that one of the achievements is quite a big spoiler, not to mention that half of the pleasure should be not knowing how many chapters you have left to keep slogging through. My advice; keep your eyes off the list until you’ve beaten the game the first time. The conclusion may make you question the events that take place, but explore enough and pick up enough text/audio/video logs and you’ll have a much better insight if you so desire. Then again, perhaps you’ll be happy to wait for the just announced sequel to extend the story, because terror fans… you must play Dead Space.
Game Over Online (Oct 23, 2008)
Go figure. In an effort by EA to diversify their portfolio with fewer sequels and more original intellectual properties, Dead Space is conceived, a sci-fi survival horror game that will undoubtedly spawn one or more sequels of its own. The story, while clichéd, is still gripping, the atmosphere is unnerving, the gameplay is exciting, and the sound design and art direction are brilliant. If you’re a fan of science fiction or horror, you owe it to yourself to have Dead Space in your collection.
Gameplayer (Australia) (Oct 22, 2008)
In any case, Dead Space is a pearler of a horror ride. For fans that love gory adventure and classic flicks like the Alien series, Predator, or any other marriage of gore and suspense, this must be played. Just be sure to book in a recuperating massage for when it’s over.
Hooked Gamers (Oct 22, 2008)
When something borrows from as many sources as Dead Space does, it is very easy for things to go horribly wrong. It is quite the delight that the game turned out as well as it did. In a world of gaming where most of the best sellers are sequels, Electronic Arts should be commended for taking a chance on a new property. Hopefully this will spur EA and other developers to take more chances on new properties and give us something different, if not entirely new. If they all turn out as well as Dead Space, the gaming future looks very good indeed.
Gamervision (Oct 23, 2008)
More than anything, the game’s ending should be applauded for being a conclusive finale that should satisfy gamers while leaving the door wide open for a sequel. EA has not only built themselves one of the scariest and prettiest games of the year, but created a thrilling and wonderful start to a new series. Dead Space might not be the masterpiece that BioShock was, but it definitely sets a bar for immersion and presentation that might not be hurdled for some years to come.
TeamXbox (Oct 14, 2008)
Thanks to Dead Space, the horror/survival genre is brimming with excitement. Dead Space’s release also marks the first time the RE series has looked vulnerable within its genre. Hmmm, maybe the term “extinction” is more than just some movie’s subtitle.
GameDaily (Oct 13, 2008)
We could dissect the game's minor issues, such as the inability to make quick turns or the reliance on gimmicky features (Kinesis feels very Star Wars), but Dead Space is too good. Say what you will about your second or third time through, but that first time is a wondrous experience full of tense moments and spectacular discoveries. This is the best survival horror game since Resident Evil 4 and a must play for anyone that appreciates the horror and/or sci-fi genre. Bravo to everyone involved.
GameSpot (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space is a remarkable game from a well-tread genre that manages to stand out from its competitors in almost every way, from visual presentation to engaging story, innovative combat mechanics to fright factor. Whether you're looking for a terrifying horror experience or a deeply story-driven adventure that will keep you engaged for 15-20 hours, Dead Space is a fantastic game that you should not pass on.

Daily Game (Oct 14, 2008)
Dead Space is both a new franchise and a new genre for EA, a bold move that's easily justified by the excellent product now borne from the development team's passion. The game is neither a shooter nor an action game, and people who play it as either type will surely fail. Dead Space is a survival-horror game through and through, a game that's so purely focused on survival and horror as gameplay elements that it delivers a much-needed jolt to the genre. Look out, Silent Hill and Resident Evil, Dead Space is here, and it's here to stay.
GameTrailers (Oct 20, 2008)
Normally games that borrow a lot of elements from others end up being less than the sum of their parts, but for everything Dead Space borrows it gives something back. The atmosphere is Metroid Prime, and the structure is Resident Evil, but everything else is all its own. The strategic dismemberment, mixture of weapons and supernatural abilities, and relentless intensity make for a game that you’ll be scared to keep playing, but won’t want to stop.
Game Informer Magazine (Nov, 2008)
The harrowing combat and disturbing story are the real stars, weaving an eerie ambiance that will keep Dead Space lurking in the dark corners of your mind long after you turn the lights back on.
That Gaming Site (Dec 01, 2008)
Dead Space is EA Redwood's first attempt to scare the hell out of you with a game, and for the most part they did just that. Excuse some graphical and plot-riddled issues and just appreciate the immersion this game presents.
IGN (Oct 10, 2008)
Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.
TalkXbox (Oct 22, 2008)
Dead Space won’t be winning any awards since it’s basically a compilation of previously used concepts molded together into one game. And despite being a survival horror game, it shares similar problems with Resident Evil 4. It’s scary at first, but once you get a bigger gun it becomes a Horror Action game, with no real threat present. That being said, Dead Space is an excellent game that’s worth checking out, even if you don’t like horror games.
The Game Hoard (Oct 02, 2018)
Dead Space uses its setting to excellent effect, creating outlandish alien monsters that require an atypical yet satisfying method to kill in a tense, restricted environment. Weapons and skills manage to be empowering to use but limited in their uses to make your resources meaningful and any failures in using them sting. The sci-fi elements allow the game to have special abilities to make exploration more interesting, environments where earthly comforts like air, noise, and gravity are stripped away, and it makes the enemies and the weapons stand out with unique identities. Area layouts and enemy types do grow to be a bit familiar over the course of the game, but Dead Space still manages to include satisfying combat without draining away the horror, although the forgiving save system does lance away a bit of the danger to make it a tinier bit less effective.
Games Finder (May 30, 2013)
Scavenging is another vital element to your survival in Dead Space with players having to carefully scavenge for items around the game world, adding to the already dark survival atmosphere.
Good Game (Oct 27, 2008)
We haven’t shown you some of the more exciting moments in the game so we don’t wreck the surprise for you. There’s some great boss fights and more than 10 hours of thrills to be had with dead space, I’m giving it 8.5.
Playback (Jan, 2009)
Armchair Empire, The (Oct 27, 2008)
As much as Dead Space should be a big mess for mixing genres and borrowing so many ideas and gameplay mechanics from other games, it manages to stand on its own as an extremely good game, especially for a new IP. Just be prepared for some gore.
Gameplanet (Oct 24, 2008)
Dead Space was definitely a risk for EA and it's great to see they were willing to run with it, because it is a fantastic game. It looks and sounds great, is a lot of fun to play and oozes atmosphere. During this very busy gaming season with so many great games coming out, there is a chance that this may be skipped over for other games with better-known names coming out in the coming month. This would be a frightful shame, as Dead Space is a game fans of action horror games should not miss! Its presentation is right up there with some of the best games of the last few years. So go forth and dismember!
GameZone (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space is a great addition to the survival horror genre, taking some of its best elements and adding some great new ones. While the linear nature puts a damper on the game’s replay value, the game is definitely worth a look for horror fans on the lookout for something scary this Halloween.
OMGN: Online Multiplayer Games Network (Dec 21, 2010)
Regardless of its pitfalls, Dead Space is worthy of your attention if you haven't played the game yet. With the sequel approaching rapidly, revisiting Dead Space would be time well spent. It's an excellent entry into the survival horror genre and should not be missed. Just don't do like I did and spend hours trying to convince yourself to move around the corner up ahead.
Game Positive (Nov 06, 2008)
At the end of the day, Dead Space is an exciting new entry into the word of survival horror. While its recycled enemies and repeating mission objectives are obvious downfalls, they aren't enough to keep you from getting completely wrapped up in the universe. The innovative HUD display, enemy dismemberment system, and tool-like weapons are all elements that help add to the amazing atmosphere created within the game. Dead Space may not offer the definitive horror experience, but it is an intense and brutal sci-fi thrill ride that will please fans of both the survival horror and action genres.
Gaming Nexus (Oct 27, 2008)
It's not without a few flaws, but those who go exploring around Dead Space will find it to be a fascinating survival horror game with an amazing presentation. Considering this is Electronic Arts' first stab at the genre it's hard not to be impressed with this game, I just wish that it was a little less derivative. Dead Space is a stunning game that every horror game fanatic needs in their collection!
1UP (Oct 13, 2008)
Dead Space ultimately feels like an incredibly polished and varied 6-hour game stretched out to make it twice that long. While I felt like I was repeating the same objectives a few too many times, the combat held up so well that I didn't even mind...too much.
Worth Playing (Oct 22, 2008)
Dead Space is basically what one would get if one took System Shock 2 and pureed it into a blender with Resident Evil 4. That's not a bad combination at all, and Dead Space turns out to be a fun game. The combat is fast and frantic, the interface excellent, the controls responsive, and it provides an overall satisfying experience. While it's fun, though, there isn't much that's memorable about Dead Space. It feels like patchwork that's been slapped together from other franchises, and it lacks a spirit of its own to make it stand out from the pack. Dead Space is inarguably worth a rental, but the short length and lack of replay value make it a worthwhile purchase for those who love the gameplay.
Gamekult (Oct 28, 2008)
Blend Games (Oct 18, 2008)
Dead Space hits familiar notes in survival horror and action but frankly, it hits these notes really well. You can question whether it's true "survival horror" and turn your nose at the fact that it borrows innovations from so many other games but it's undeniable that this is an extremely well-executed game that mixes and matches familiar-but-excellent gameplay mechanics to create a fun, scary experience.
Good Game (Oct 27, 2008)
I would have liked a bit more variety in enemies, not counting the bosses there’s really only 6 and then harder versions of them. You’ve got this great dismemberment combat- why not go to town with it? Still, Dead Space is a nice addition to a tough genre, I’m giving it 8.
UOL Jogos (Oct 24, 2008)
"Dead Space" um jogo feito com grande capricho, mostrando que a Electronic Arts investiu pesado na criação de uma nova franquia. Embora não seja lá muito original ou profundo, deixando alguns elementos fundamentais previsíveis ou banalizados, o game consegue manter um clima de tensão constante, o que parece ter sido seu grande objetivo. Assim, deve ser o suficiente para os fãs do gênero, pelo menos até que o próximo " Resident Evil" dê as caras.
PlayDevil (Dec 04, 2008)
"Dead Space" does everything right as far as horror games, although it also does things so spectacularly well, that it's a fantastic game as well. In conclusion EA's horror title is a must play and certainly one of the games of 2008.
Totally Gaming Network (Oct 22, 2008)
Generally speaking Dead Space is a fantastic experience. It is one that everyone should play even if you are not traditionally a fan of the horror genre. The story telling is done really well and I can definitely see this as being a new franchise for EA. Among all of the other titles that are coming out this holiday season be sure to make some time for Dead Space. You will be glad you did.
G4 TV: X-Play (Oct 19, 2008)
Despite lacking some tweaks that could have made the most horror-jaded gamers wet themselves, Dead Space delivers scares, gore and a truly disturbing gem of a game. If you’re up to a second go at the USG Ishimura, a completed playthrough will net you, a la Resident Evil 4, money and weapons upgrades that should have you staving off the infected at least one more time. Dead Space is a must buy for all fans of survival horror.
Video Games Daily (Oct 20, 2008)
But repetition is only an issue if the action repeated is no fun, and while it never blows your socks off, Dead Space seldom fails to entertain. As in Bioshock (by my lights, at least - please direct all hate mail to the usual address) the fundamentals here are ultimately so many old chestnuts, but EA Redwood strings its borrowed parts together with becoming deftness, then seasons them with some delightfully unpleasant atmospherics. The resulting game lacks 2K Games' breakaway premise or narrative verve, but it's still a tightly crafted, resolutely competent addition to the survival horror scene. Keep 'em coming, chaps.
videogamer.com (Oct 13, 2008)
On the whole though, Dead Space is a superb survival horror romp that's guaranteed to scare. If you like Resident Evil 4, you should definitely go out and buy this game right now. It's clearly set up for a sequel, and we can't wait. For now though, we'll leave you with the obligatory 'best played alone and with the lights off' advice. Go on. You're not chicken are you?
DarkZero (Nov 03, 2008)
I think I have gone over everything that is needed to be said. Dead Space is a well made action horror shooter. If you are a fan of the genre then you should really take this advice and check it out. It is a short experience, lasting around 8-10 hours depending on how experienced you are. It does give you the option to replay with the same upgrades you finished with, but apart from Trophies/Achievements, there really isn’t any incentive to do so again because it’s quite a linear game.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 13, 2008)
None of these criticisms will detract from your enjoyment, provided all you want from a game is the opportunity to repeatedly turn evil monsters into red mush in gorgeous HD detail. Dead Space easily delivers on that promise, but fails to turn its polished production values into something truly memorable over the long haul.
Tap-Repeatedly/Four Fat Chicks (Aug 04, 2010)
If I take one thing away from my experience in Dead Space, it is that therein lies flashes of brilliance, but we must properly criticize developers to help them understand what can make the difference between a merely good game and an unforgettable one. To my eye there is an endless list of improvements this game (now franchise, I suppose) could receive; elsewhere, I look around and see sycophantic levels of praise with little thought given to perfect scores thrown at an honestly mediocre game. I look forward to how future installments are received since sequels tend to be judged more harshly, as a rule.
