If you, like me, are a fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and Morrowind in particular, this expansion is a must play. There are so many great references and callbacks to Bethesda’s classic third entry that only fans will pick up on. Even for those of you who haven’t played Morrowind, but are looking for an excuse to jump back into Tamriel, this is a great purchase. There is plenty of content for the money, and it’s different enough to allow even those with over 100 hours in Skyrim to feel refreshed. It’s easily the best piece of Skyrim expansion content yet, and well worthy of $20.

Dragonborn left me with the same inclination that Skyrim’s main game left me with after I had finished with the main questline, and that’s that I just want to explore and milk as much content out of it as I can. After 10 hours, there’s still stuff I want to see and places I want to go. If you felt letdown by Dawnguard or Hearthfire, then try not to let that put you off, because what Bethesda have created here is exactly what Skyrim fans would have been crying out for… and that’s an experience that captures the brilliance of the main game but in a much more bitesize manner. We can’t recommend this piece of DLC enough.

Dragonborn is a creepy descent into madness set in a mini Morrowind that isn’t quite as epic as Dawnguard, but it compensates for that with a wealth of new items, shouts, and spells. Its performance issues and overreliance on Skyrim storytelling tropes are difficult to ignore, but beneath all the frustration is a great adventure that examines the power of knowledge and how far one man will go to rule the world.

Overall, Dragonborn is a better piece of content than Dawnguard in my opinion. It offers plenty of new places to explore, some new puzzles in dungeons and new things to kill. Sure, it has some of the problems that many Bethesda titles have, but it’s still an enjoyable experience. It’s not as in-depth or big as the Shivering Isles, but Dragonborn is still a good addition to the Skyrim universe.

Personally, I liked Hearthfire, and before that, Dawnguard, better than Dragonborn. The "epic" quest felt like it was cut for time and the dragon riding was nowhere near what I wanted it to be. The questing here will surely be enjoyed by tons of players, but the missed opportunities made this my least favorite Skyrim expansion yet.

I’ve been moaning a lot about how there hasn’t been much innovation in Dragonborn like the miserable curmudgeon that I am, but for many people the sheer amount of new content will be reason enough to give this new expansion a try. You can’t fault Bethesda in the value for money stakes when there’s tens of hours of new content for those looking for more Skyrim adventuring. After completing the main campaign and several side-quests there were still plenty of others left in my journal to be getting on with. The appeal of Dragonborn will largely come down to how tired you are with Skyrim’s core mechanics. It’s a massive chunk of more of the same, basically. If that’s what you’re looking for you’ll be more than satisfied, but lapsed players shouldn’t expect anything intriguing enough to drag them back in.
