My moan about some of the physics quirks aside there's really not much bad to say about FlatOut Ultimate Carnage, and even those things are easily overlooked when you're having this much smile-inducing fun, which means we're left with something of a gem. It's a game with a huge sense of fun, it knows what gamers want and isn't ashamed to deliver it in spades. Its unforgiving elastic band AI and relatively steep learning curve may put some people off but they'll be missing out on one of the most enjoyable racers around and should be taunted accordingly.

When you look at the complete picture, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage really is the ultimate arcade racer. It may not have licensed cars and the tracks can be repetitive, not to mention the gameplay hasn't changed much at all since the series birth a few years back, but fun, addictive and easy to get into 'pick up and play' driving action is what this game is all about, and in those departments it delivers without a hitch. Some areas could have perhaps seen slightly more attention to really solidify this game as a true next gen experience, but it is still the most fun I've had on the Xbox 360 and I think many will come to that same conclusion when they try it out. If you want unbridled, often insanely fun and addictive racing gameplay on your 360, you can't go wrong with Flatout: Ultimate Carnage.

If you enjoy Burnout games, this off-the-wall racer will most definitely satisfy your hankering for vehicular mayhem.

It doesn’t take away the enjoyment factor though. Flatout is not a game that will keep you entertained for days or test your skills to the limit. But most importantly it is good looking, easy to pick up and mainly fun! Whether you play it as a single player or get your mates round to have a laugh with the fun events, it is definitely worth checking out!

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is one of this or any other console generation's better ports, though it is not without its issues. Not being able to conduct races on local machines is a glaring omission, and load times can certainly cut down on Party Mode's fun factor. Still, Ultimate Carnage is a solid game, and its Stunt Mode alone can be played for endless hours without a trace of boredom seeping in. Those who own the original might want to consider dropping US$50 on a title already in their collection, but those looking for a significant upgrade or an introduction to FlatOut's carnage need not look further.

Those who enjoy arcade style racing games should definitely add FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage to their wish list. It's quite unlike any other racing title on the Xbox 360 and is a great deal of fun to play. There's not a lot of depth to the game, to be completely honest, but the single-player game is quite challenging and it's sure to take most gamers 20 hours or more to complete all of the challenges on offer. Then, of course, you have the Xbox Live modes to keep you interested as well as all of the game's achievements to complete. Graphically the game is rather impressive and it's easily one of the better looking racing titles on the system. If you are into arcade racers and own an Xbox 360 then FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is definitely a must.

And that, perhaps, is the crux of the argument - you'll always go back to the racing. Maybe a couple of harsh punishments, or run-ins with the elasticated AI, will leave you seething; maybe you'll drop the controller and stalk off in a rage after a few crippling physics bugs too many; but you'll always go back. FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage isn't perfect, and doesn't quite live up to its promise; but it's sitting on the doorstep of absolute, legendary greatness. Everyone with a spark in their soul for high speed, ultra-destructive fun should play this game, and cross their fingers that just that tiny bit of extra care can be lavished on the next game in the series.

GameSpy (Oct 25, 2007)
Certainly not a smart option for ardent racing purists or those who live and die on the basis of realistic car physics or big, open tracks, FlatOut is instead a great tonic for high-speed thrill seekers who enjoy its bull in a china shop approach. It looks far better than the previous versions, it features more game modes, cars, and obstacles, and it's more explosive. Certifiably insane but with a method to its madness, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is just plain fun.

PlayDevil (Aug 17, 2007)
"Flatout Ultimate Carnage" for the 360 nearly has everything. It has pretty gorgeous graphics, a reasonable soundtrack, but excellent sound effects, a lengthy single-player campaign and hilarious multiplayer. The only criticisms are the fact that the game is too similar to 'Flatout 2' but this time it's now in 'next-gen' and the fact that the game is a little too hard for most people. If you missed out first time round for whatever reason, there really is no reason to pass up Ultimate Carnage; it is the definitive arcade racer for the 360 so far.

Fragland.net (Sep 14, 2007)
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is simply a very fun game for those that like brainless racing, big crashes, chaos all around on the road and tons of collisions, fun minigames and more than enough variation to keep you and your friends occupied for a while. It won’t become a classic but sometimes you don’t need more for a couple of hours of top notch entertainment. Do take into account that the changes compared to FlatOut 2 (except for the graphics update of course) will only be able to convince the biggest fans to buy this version if they’ve already got the original in their cupboard.

Ultimate Carnage may not be a huge advancement over FlatOut 2, but it's another excellent addition an exciting and enjoyable series that's a worth addition to the collection of any arcade racing fans, and gamers beyond.

If you like your racing fast and furious, with more than a little car-crushing chaos, then FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage will definitely satisfy your needs. If you like your racing a little more civilized, you might want to check out something like Project Gotham Racing 4 instead.

GameSpot (Oct 09, 2007)
The newly released FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is actually just a reworking of 2006's demolition racer FlatOut 2. It's got the prerequisite shiny new graphics and additional on-track carnage. However, it also comes with some new modes and vehicles to help flesh out the package a bit more. While you can't help but feel like developer BugBear might have just been better off making a proper FlatOut sequel instead of reheating its last game, the upgrades made here are significant enough to make the game stand on its own.

The only problem I had is that, as a racer, I prefer the sense of speed and car physics of the Burnout series and I was disappointed in the seeming inconsistency regarding which objects in the environment you could or couldn't bowl over --- I swear it changed from lap to lap. Not only that, but even shortcut jumps could be risky because you might unexpectedly biff the landing. I wouldn't suggest buying this game if you've already got FO 2, but it's a great intro to the series for everyone else.

Gamestyle (Oct 17, 2007)
So, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is a game that pushes the franchise to the threshold of greatness, the title’s quality belying its low-key launch. However, it’s difficult to recommend FlatOut wholeheartedly given that the practically non-existent difficulty curve and frustrating physics might be enough to deter those in search of simple arcade crash ‘em up thrills entirely.

This feels like the point-blank shot in the face that racing games so sorely need. It would just work better if said shot didn't hurt so damn much.

I think the word that sums this game up is "frunstrating". Yes thats not a real word, but its a mixture of Fun and Frustration so it fits perfectly. This game could have been excellent with a bit more polish and time playtesting. Unfortunately that didn't happen and we have a game that tries to be fun and offer something new but doesn't quite deliver ... if you play the game in short bursts it should prove less frustrating and annoying. If you have the patience of a saint and can find the game cheaper than the usual recommended retail price then add another 10 points to the overall score.

Computer Bild Spiele (Aug 01, 2007)
