Needless to say though, the decks provided with the game are certainly enough to give the game a damn good thrashing. A nice bonus is that if you get in quick with buying this game, Wizards of the Coast will provide you with a free limited edition Magic: The Gathering playing card to get you started on building a real deck.

To get the real life equivalent of the virtual deck of cards would set you back hundreds of dollars and Jung I've already ploughed more hours into this than most triple A games - and I'm not finished yet.. it's 9/10 from me...

The single player campaign, depending on your skill level will keep you busy for a few hours at you’ll need to rack up 130-140 wins in any mode to unlock every card possible. The only fault I can find with the game, as a casual “Magic” fan, is the lack of online co-op play, which as I stated previously, will hopefully be fixed in the near future with a patch. Provided, Wizards and Stainless Games doesn’t botch add-on packs, this online version of “Magic” is going to keep a lot of people entertained and happy, without having to shell out big bucks for the physical cards themselves. Highly Recommended.

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers is a great game both for those who want an easier entry in the popular trading card game, but also for veteran players who want to enjoy a good game of Magic once in a while without the hassle of constructing a deck from nothing. I can easily recommend both the PC and the XBLA versions of the title, as well as both packs of downloadable content available.
Duels of the Planeswalkers isn’t a perfect interpretation of sitting down and playing a few rounds with friends at the kitchen table, but it’s remarkably good all the same. Veterans will enjoy being able to find players over Xbox Live any time they want, though they may feel limited in the current cards/decks available. Newcomers to the game will find a bit of a learning curve before they’re ready to face experienced opponents, but have plenty of tools to help them get to that point. Just be careful if you’re a recovering Magic addict like myself – you just may find yourself pulled back into a hobby you haven’t bothered with in a decade.

Stainless Games has always stated its intention to balance depth with accessibility and its workings in how to best streamline the experience to XBLA are well reasoned. The result is an experience just close enough to the tabletop game to please serious players, for a fraction of the cost. If the game develops a strong community, and Wizards of the Coast offer additional cards and decks via downloadable content, 360’s CCG gap could be covered for years to come.

A warning to the more hardcore Magic fans out there – you may very well be turned off by a lack of full deck customization and only mildly flexible class-based color deck setup. Yet what's offered in Duels of the Planeswalkers, while it may be different from what Magic fans expect, is still an entertaining brand of card battle game, with plenty of depth, complexity, and unpredictability to keep you drawing from your library again and again.

Card games on XBLA do tend to do quite well. Take for instance UNO or Lost Worlds. Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planewalkers is one of the better card games on XBLA. For those new to the world of Magic, I would suggest checking out the demo first, just to see if you're into this sort of game. For those seasoned veterans, it will give you a lot more features than playing in some dark basement, so it is definitely worth your time.

These are small complaints, but ones that put a pinch on what could have been a smoother, more memorable experience. For those who don’t care about the game’s look, but simply want to play with a remote friend or not have to bother with the rules/dealing minutia, Duels of the Planeswalkers will probably be a great buy. For those learning the game, it’d probably be better to get some real-world experience first, though the Mentor System is a welcome addition (provided there are enough players who are willing to offer themselves as tutors). Either way, the $10 investment is a small one, and it’s good to see such major game brands as Magic: The Gathering making their way to Xbox Live Arcade for fans.

Overall, Duels of the Planeswalkers is a difficult game to review. With the lack of customization and limited selection of 280 cards, the game may have little or no appeal to Magic: The Gathering veterans. However, the Mentoring feature, comprehensive tutorials, pre-made decks, and a comparatively low financial investment required to start playing the game make it fantastic choice for beginners. The graphical interface could use some polish, and the terrible sound design is unlikely to change, but Wizards of the Coast and Stainless Games have created a great introductory product. However, those Magic: The Gathering veterans that care more about playing the game than agonizing over deck lists and the latest combos may also find a great deal of value in Duels of the Planeswalkers.

But seriously, I've always been more of a strategist than a tactician, and this game's taken away my ability to tweak my deck, and it's taken away the complicated rules. So by the time I get the cards in front of me, I'm just going through the motions. You still get a good challenge online, but to me that was, whoever makes a mistake loses, rather than whoever plays best wins.

So, here’s the deal: if you want a recreation of the Magic experience without having to fuss with booster packs or shuffling, or if you need a refresher on the M10 rules, Duels of the Planeswalkers should be a game to consider. If you’re a newcomer, I can’t speak to that. What I do know is that Magic: The Gathering is a challenging, complex and a rewarding game. It’s a blast to play. Duels of the Planeswalkers captures the core experience and wraps it up in a technically sound, enjoyable package. If you can deal with the lack of editing, download the demo. If you’re new, definitely give the demo a spin. You probably won’t be disappointed.

In the end, the issues with Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers come with the lack of customization, failing to truly reach the potential that the current generation offers. While online multiplayer is fun and the presentation is spot on, much of the enjoyment and skill in MtG is in deck-building , an omission that truly hurts the overall experience. Even so, the allure of the online experience over Xbox Live should be tempting to fans of the game, especially with hopes that some of the issues might be fixed with future downloadable content to add further customization.

Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers may not revolutionize computerized card-based games, but is does one simple thing right, it allows for new and old fans to meet on equal ground. If you have ever wanted to experience Magic the Gathering, or if you have wanted to play again but refused to shell out the money in order to have a good enough deck to play at the local comic shops, this game is designed for you, as it delivers the experience in a simple and easily accessible fashion so that soon everyone will be talking about Magic the Gathering like a pro. For only ten bucks, you really can’t afford to miss this title if you have even the slightest bit of interest in Magic.

If you're already a Magic expert, this is an acceptable way to get in a few games online with friends, though you'll likely find the inability to create your own deck to be a pretty major drawback. If you're a Magic neophyte, you'll get more out of this experience. And while 10 bucks isn't exactly a bargain, it may seem like one compared to what you end up spending on real Magic cards if this game casts its spell on you.

Sin embargo queda perenne la sensación de que el juego podría haber sido colosal de haber implementado detalles técnicos que se pueden encontrar en otros juegos de cartas como Yu-Gi-Oh! o The Eye of Judgment, y que deberían convertirse en estándares de la actual generación como pudieran ser la implementación de físicas en un juego de conducción, no olvidemos que al fin y al cabo, es un videojuego. Aún así, es un juego idóneo para todo amateur de juegos de cartas modernos, sin que sea necesariamente de Magic.

If Magic: The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers ends up being an introduction to Magic for the console audience, leading up to a full-fledged version of Magic Online that includes regular card updates and online deckbuilding, then Wizards of the Coast should be applauded. If that game never materializes from this first effort, then WotC should realize that it's missed an incredible opportunity.

For anyone who has played the card game before this game will probably be an enjoyable enough experience and for anyone who likes a bit of strategy, you will have no problems picking this up thanks to the excellent tutorials provide. Magic is a solid enough game, so if strategy and/or card based games then you should consider it.
