Need For Speed as a franchise, although giving a solid on-track performance in ProStreet, might want to consider a U-turn and returning back the street racing that made playing a Need For Speed title so titillating. There are still chills and thrills to be found in ProStreet’s more organized “underground” racing series, though, as the racing action still very much fills the need for speed for racing gamers.

Overall, the demo offers too little to make a solid impression of what NFS ProStreet can really do and since there's no taking it online, we can only hope it delivers even more top-notch gameplay. Still, ProStreet's damage system is something that cannot be described in simple words and so we're going to detail this aspect within the full game's review. Also, gamers will surely notice the gorgeous smoke effects as they spin their wheels waiting for the green light. Thus, since we've run out of metaphors and epithets to describe NFS ProStreet's visual and gameplay qualities, all that remains for you to do is download the demo via Xbox Live Marketplace and experience everything we've shared with you today, hands-on.

NFS: ProStreet is an accomplished title, but why the change? The street racing of the previous games was far more fun, and to be honest, wasn't tired yet, although Carbon was pretty rubbish, that was more down to the handling and graphics and gameplay issues when compared to Most Wanted or NFSU. Hopefully that game style will return soon. But the amazing graphics and solid gameplay hold up well, although the game was never going to be as good as PGR4 or Forza 2. However, if you have played these 2 games to death, 'ProStreet' is easily the next best road racer of 2007, and is well worth a play thanks to the customisation options and lengthy career mode.

Davon abgesehen zeigt Pro Street so viel Potenzial.

The one undoubtedly cool thing that ProStreet brings to the table is it's online play (except on Wii), where you can create your own race days and invite friends to compete in them. The race day will keep a persistent leaderboard of everyone's progress, so you can always go back and knock off your buddy. How often do I change my motor oil, you ask? Whenever I damn well feel like it.

All in all ProStreet is a more than innovating game in the NFS-family, mostly thanks to the circuit racing, the long career mode and some new game types. You can see it as a Hot Pursuit 2 mixed with Carbon but without cops and completely legal. The game is a worthy successor in the series although the controls could have been better. Hopefully we'll be getting more from this but a bit better.

If you’re a huge fan of the Need For Speed series, you’re probably going to be disappointed with this latest iteration. The expansive customization features are still there and this is the most impressive looking NFS title to date, but the gameplay is lacking. If you enjoy a good, old-fashioned racing game in the same vein of a Gran Turismo (although not as fun) then you’ll most likely enjoy this title. If you could get a good deal on this game, you should definitely pick it up because it will provide you with hours of entertainment. But don’t shell out $59.99 for it because, quite frankly, it’s not worth that much.

It’s a pretty game; it’s also fairly repetitive and tends to be aimed more at Pro gamers than the casual gamer. A lack of open world gameplay brings the series back towards its roots, but in the end hampers it more than helps - Perhaps next time?

Not only does the track based racing highlight the game's less-than-stellar car physics, it makes the game's attempt at a story feel all the more disjointed and uninspired. ProStreet does have some impressive graphics, but its gameplay is about as vanilla as they come.

IGN (Nov 13, 2007)
Need for Speed ProStreet is a disappointing effort in a franchise that has generally been rather solid. It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own Burnout Paradise, but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left. It could have still been a decent game had the cars driven well, but unfortunately their performance is shoddy. Car lovers will find something to like here due to the customization options, but Need for Speed has certainly seen better days.

Honestly, we still prefer Most Wanted to ProStreet even though ProStreet offers significantly improved tire smoke that actually wraps around the wheel wells of your car, because Most Wanted had cops that chased us and provided a really compelling reason to drive as fast as humanly possible. Somehow, without the incentive of resisting arrest (and with the incentive of unlocking even more commercials and advertisements) our interest in this franchise is beginning to wane.

So I guess I’ve come around to my question; does Pro Street make NFS back into a series that I enjoy following. Simple answer: no it doesn’t. The main reason is its muddled design process. Realistically, (excuse my pun) the game isn’t going to draw the realism-craving Forza / GT fans away, but at the same time it’s alienating the fans of the series; the arcade racers. Any fans of NFS are better of sticking with Most Wanted, where kitting up cars and racing the dog’s bollocks off them is well executed. EA better have the next game (which they will) return to the glory days otherwise I feel that the NFS series will be nothing more than an inside joke for gamers for years to come. If you really need a Racing fix this year (before Christmas) then buy PGR 4. If you can hang on, wait till Burnout Paradise is released in January.

While Need for Speed: Prostreet is a decent racing game with some lovely online play, it’s ultimately a step backwards for the series. The lack of police chases, the horrendous amount of in-game advertising and a lack of interesting events make this feel like a competent but uninspired effort that may end up collecting dust sooner that you think.

In a brilliant racing game, you could forgive this sort of thing, and the occasional botched mode, and the annoying presentation, but ProStreet is far from a brilliant racing game. It's tolerable enough and will certainly last you a long time, but it seems a shame that what used to be one of EA's better, more reserved racing games has become quite so loud, desperate and mediocre in an attempt to distinguish itself, and that what it does get right in this year's iteration is almost completely divorced from the track where so many of its contemporaries excel.

Video Game Talk (Feb 04, 2008)
NFS Prostreet is a highly polished title, but completely absent of entertainment value. Strangely opposite of most franchises, the Need for Speed series has taken a rapid decline since the release of Need for Speed: Most Wanted in the first year of the Xbox 360. It's progressively becoming a game that's all shine, but no true substance. By removing fan favorites like police chases, solid storyline and an open world aspect, the developers on Prostreet have stripped the series down to a hollow shell. There's a modicum of folks that attend events like Race Week that may enjoy the structure of the game, but it's quite dated and sadly boring for the rest of us. If you just can't stay away, rent Prostreet to get a feel for what I talking about. Otherwise, stick to titles like Test Drive Unlimited until Electronic Arts gets it right.
