There is just something about Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 that shines, sure it lacks FIFA’s obvious polish but once you are immersed in the gameplay it is still the best football game where it counts and that’s why it’s the champion once more.

Gameplanet (Dec 02, 2008)
Putting aside the disappointments of PES 2009, on the pitch, the game is still the most realistic football sim on the market. I don’t believe the PES franchise is getting any worse, rather that EA’s FIFA franchise is barking at its heels and surpassing it in some areas. The time has come for Konami to take the series to the next level and that could mean “dumbing” some things down a little (eg. the shooting) to make it less anal and more accessible to the casual gamer.
Vandal Online (Oct 14, 2008)
IGN UK (Oct 10, 2008)
For all its problems off the pitch, there’s no doubting that PES 2009 is the most fun football game on the market. There’s a nagging feeling that this is merely the game that the past iterations should have been, but there’s no denying that it plays as good a game as ever – which means for the neutral, the choice of which game to pledge their allegiance to is as hard as ever. Ultimately, FIFA wins out thanks to it offering the most comprehensive package, but those who choose to spend the next season in the company of PES won’t be disappointed.

Put it this way: we've been avid PES fans since the series inception and this year we're FIFA converts. PES makes changes to its formula that aren't particularly welcome for the most part and, while the Become A Legend mode has potential, the general gameplay has taken a downturn.
UOL Jogos (Nov 21, 2008)
PES has always been the little game that could. It's faced the might of EA and delivered a soccer game that has been superior for most of its lifetime. However, lately EA seem to have suddenly "got” what players want, and have dished up a mighty fine game in FIFA 09. On the other hand Konami have seemed to rest on their laurels, and for possibly the first time have dropped the ball and seen FIFA take the win.
TeamXbox (Nov 11, 2008)
Pick up Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 if you are a huge fan of the series or need a fresh football fix. Everyone else would be better off snatching up a used copy of FIFA 09 from the preowned rack.

IGN (Nov 26, 2008)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 makes a valiant effort at keeping pace with FIFA 09, and there are some improvements and good ideas under the strange gameplay changes that were made, it’s just tough to see them if you’ve played FIFA. As with most beleaguered franchises, it seems like PES 2009 could use a bit of a reboot with a new engine and improved visuals and presentation values. If not, I’d be willing to bet that FIFA will be the king of the pitch for years to come.
GameZone (Nov 11, 2008)
PES 2009 is an improvement over last year’s game, albeit a very minor one. If the PES franchise wants to stay competitive against FIFA, they certainly have their work cutout for them.

It probably sounds a little like Electronic Arts have paid me to write this. Well, they haven't. Neither have Konami done anything to disrepute my family. In fact if anything, I'm bias the other way. I like Konami, and I have negative feelings towards large corporate entities which are trying to monopolise the gaming market (whoever they may be). But it's just simply about gameplay, and the game's overall quality. This game has graphical beauty but in many other areas it fails to excel. On the other hand, it is still a good game, but it's just a few levels below where it really needs to be to compete with the reborn version of FIFA.
GameSpot (Oct 22, 2008)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is a good game, but it's one that has significantly failed to evolve over the last few years. The new modes add some potential interest for owners of last year’s game, but the Champions League is just flashy dressing for a competition that still doesn't feature all of the official teams, and the Become a Legend mode is neither as feature-packed nor as fun to play as FIFA 09's equivalent. If you love Pro Evolution Soccer's gameplay and simple control system then this year's game is worth checking out, but everyone has a right to demand much more from Konami's increasingly stale series.
Thunderbolt Games (Oct 26, 2008)
It’s definitely difficult to please everyone, let alone football fans. As a lover of the PES series, the time has come to see a complete overhaul to the engine and structure of this ageing formula. With a host of new gameplay modes, and a selection of problematic features, this version of PES will only appeal to the hardcore. As it stands today, FIFA 09 provides the better, and hugely more realistic simulation of the beautiful game. Fortunately for Konami, they will once again cash in on the faith of their support, and get away with releasing a totally unfinished, and adequate product for the third year running. It’s a dreadful shame, as for now, PES’s main rival is not only well ahead, it is also ironically showing the team up with one main ingredient; evolution.

Still, we can't help but feel that there's going to be thousands of PES fans who embrace the power of the dark side this year, on account of the fact that it simply doesn't feel like Konami is putting much effort into the so-called 'next-gen' versions of PES these days. You might even say the PS2 is the lead platform, when you compare the strides forward between Konami and EA's efforts. PES 2009 is a good game, but the times they are changin', and we're afraid that Konami is being left behind. Time for a reboot, Seabass.
The basic act of playing the game is still enjoyable enough, but with FIFA adding loads of great new features like 10 vs 10 online multiplayer, this seems like a step sideways instead of forwards.
70 (UK) (Oct 15, 2008)
Should you stick with Konami, then, PES 2009 will grow on you, and you may forget you ever thought about switching teams in the first place. But personality isn't always enough, and the fact is that PES can only draw alongside FIFA in the areas where the Konami game's strong, falls short in others, and never could hope to compete on the glossier, contracts and lipstick side of sports game production that EA's ruled for years. Not quite a reversal, but PES needs to be a very different game when it hits 2010 if it wants to overhaul the Canadian upstart.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will undoubtedly appeal to the PES faithful. If you're a FIFA guy and are wondering what the fuss is all about, you'll still be left wondering. The solid, friendly A.I. and easy passing mechanic is more satisfying than that of last year's version or that found in EA's footie title. However, the lack of overall polish is inexcusable. Thankfully, this is a discounted title here in North America. For $49.99 you will be treated to a fun game of soccer, but you will also be subject to some glaring missteps. Do yourself a favor and pick this game up on PC. That seems to be where this series shines and is supported by literally a world full of players.
After being on top for so long, PES goes down hard this year. We desperately tried to find any positives in PES 09, but we couldn’t manage even that. The game is fun, if you play it once that is. Graphics are sad, realism level is even worse, and the fact that FIFA 09 is so good this year will not make life any easier for PES 09. Being a devoted (Arsenal) football fan and having played so many football games (As Arsenal) for years now, I can firmly confirm that this is not the football game you want to be playing this year. FIFA 09 to PES 09 is exactly what FIFA 02 was to PES 02. For all the hardcore PES fans out there, good luck finding any positives in this one.
Console Monster (Oct 21, 2008)
Overall, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 shoots but misses the target. The ideas are there but Konami haven’t executed them as well as they could have done.
XboxAchievements (Oct 30, 2008)
In one word: disappointing. This is exactly what we don’t expect from a PES game and considering the improvements made by its nearest rival it comes as even more of a surprise. Hopefully this will provide the kick up the backside needed for a complete overhaul but that will do nothing to placate fans that were expecting so much more this year.
1UP (Nov 12, 2008)
The PES-versus-FIFA bout is always tough to call, but while neither disappoints, I'll narrowly side with the glitzier, überlicensed competition this season: FIFA 09.
Meristation (Oct 13, 2008)
Palabra.
Game Shark (Nov 26, 2008)
PES 2009 is still a fun and enjoyable game; there are quite a few modes – the Master League is still here, as well as online play. Become a Legend really is a disappointment, especially when compared to the amazing FIFA model. It’s just now you can really see the difference between FIFA and PES – and FIFA is starting to pull away.
