Overall we are impressed with id Software?s latest addition to the Quake universe, the story, and the multiplayer battles make Quake 4 a must buy title for your newly purchased Xbox 360 and is a welcome addition to any first person shooter fans collection, see you on Xbox Live.
Game Chronicles (Nov 23, 2005)
How do you go about creating one of the most anticipated sequels in the history of gaming then launching it on the Xbox 360? Well, if you are id Software and the game is QUAKE 4 the responsibility to the gaming community is unfathomable. But what better concept that to base the single-player, story part of your game off of QUAKE II and the multiplayer game off of what is arguably one of the best multiplayer games (or at least engines) ever made, QUAKE III. Then to seal the deal you get Raven Software, a company that was literally built on the foundation of id’s previous engines and the masters of level design and storytelling.

Quake 4 may not be the cream of the crop when it comes to 360 launch titles, but it is certainly no push over. The only real problem with Quake 4 is the fact that there it does very little to separate itself apart from all the other FPS titles on the market and is somewhat of a run and gun game, which gets rather old quickly. However Quake 4 knows what it is and makes the best out of it, making it one of the best and prettiest run and gun shooters on the market right now.
MMGN (May 02, 2006)
Quake 4 combines the best of both worlds. Phenomenal graphics and killer gameplay is just the beginning of what this game has to offer. Despite some frame rate issues and that feeling of déjà vu during the singleplayer campaign; this game is well worth your hard earned cash and has more than enough bonus content to keep you coming back for more. If you’re still not convinced; just download the demo off Xbox live and see for yourself.

Over the years id Software has grown into the fattest cat in town. Originally a small, hungry Texas developer whose games were first distributed through shareware, id then pioneered the first-person shooter genre and has moved on to become one of the industry's most commanding developmental forces. Anyway you look at it, id now sits real pretty right now.

Video Game Talk (Dec 08, 2005)
"Quake 4" succeeds in bringing "Quake" to the next generation of realism and fun. The atmosphere will increase your heart rate, the despicable violence will make you cringe, and the eerily devilish opponents will make you run for your life. "Quake 4" takes the fun factor to a whole new level and will have you smiling or possibly screaming from beginning to end. It's not for the light hearted or children under 17 due to the violence I've mentioned, so please keep that in mind.

Hot on the heels of last summer's Doom 3, id Software has returned with a new bloodbath and a new development partner. Does Quake 4 deliver the goods? You bet...just don't expect anything earth-shattering.
XBox Evolved (Dec 01, 2005)
id Software is well known around the PC community and now wants to make a presence on the Xbox 360. id Software is among the elite FPS developers in the industry and have a long list of creditability to their fame. Working on franchises such as DOOM, Wolfenstein and Quake, they are respectable and no one can deny their success with the FPS genre. They recently developed 2004¡¦s DOOM 3 (released in 2005 for the Xbox) and worked on the expansion, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil with Nerve Software. Now it¡¦s finally time for their third FPS franchise, Quake, to be revived once again for the next-generation of consoles.

On paper, Quake 4 on the Xbox 360 is an exact port of the recently-released PC version. In practice, it’s readily apparent that the game was designed from the ground up for the precision of mouse-and-keyboard control, and the 360 edition really suffers for it. Both online and off, Quake 4 on 360 is a clear step down from the PC version – which is especially disheartening when compared to fantastic launch titles like Call of Duty 2. You do get to shoot stuff, lots of stuff, but it’s all old hat to anyone who has played a first-person shooter in the last decade or so.
JeuxActu (Dec 05, 2005)
Armchair Empire, The (Dec 29, 2005)
Something the Quake franchise has always had trouble with is a telling a coherent story to connect the games. The original Quake was long on action and short on details -- your nameless soldier blasted his way from entrance to exit and that was about it. (I wouldn't even include the brief text at the end of the game that explains what you just did.) Quake II provided a storyline of sorts (a battle between humanity and the cyborg Strogg) but it too was short on detail or any connection to the original. Quake III didn't bother with a story at all, instead concentrating wholly on multiplayer death and co-op matches. Now comes Quake 4 with a whole-hearted attempt at providing a story to accompany the action by picking up where Quake II left off.

Quake 4 is Activision's latest PC port to a console. This time we have the highly anticipated Quake 4 on the equally anticipated Xbox 360 platform. I will take a look at the latest Quake offering to see if it can revolutionize gaming like its predecessors did.

Quake 4 may not have an original bone in its body (you’ll feel like you’ve done it all before) but its campaign mode was an engaging and thrilling enough sci-fi-pulp shooter to keep me wanting to play it, despite some severe, game-spoiling technical issues. The simple fact that it made the 360’s launch may well indicate that the conversion/optimisation could have been better, and that’s a shame because there’s great potential in the Quake universe, fighting to get out. The Xbox 360 can do a lot better than this, and so can Raven.
Gamezine (Dec 22, 2005)
Video Game Talk (Jan 12, 2006)
Technically it's the first "new" showing of the Quake series since 1999, so how does it stack up? The story may be better than the rest of the games in the franchise and the multiplayer is on par with the series, but not entirely robust. Unfortunately compared to other shooters on the market today the game comes across as feeling lacking with a mediocre single player experience and sparse options to play on Live with. Out of the three FPS games on the 360 right now, this is probably the weakest of the bunch. The game is strong enough on its own merit, but a little disappointing in the end. Even so I'm still going to recommend it for 360 owners, but would recommend Call of Duty 2 or Perfect Dark Zero even more.
GameSpot (Nov 21, 2005)
The Quake series of sci-fi first-person shooters has always had a fairly sketchy history on console platforms. It has often represented the pinnacle of PC graphical capabilities, but translating those high-end graphics to affordable, mass-market consoles has usually proved to be a tough process. That trend continues with Quake 4 for the Xbox 360. Despite the 360's stature as the most powerful console on the market, it just can't keep up with this game's demanding visuals (which probably speaks more to the lackluster quality of the game's translation from the PC than to the system's power, judging by how well the 360's two other first-person shooters look by comparison). Quake 4 is a compelling game, but when saddled with an extremely unstable frame rate, it's tough to recommend.
XboxFrance (Jun 27, 2006)

Overall, I found Quake 4 to be a slightly enjoyable (due to the futuristic weapons, complete with butt-kicking sounds), yet frame rate-plagued game. The score would have been 1-2 points higher if the frame rate was fixed, and a little more thought was put into the multiplayer. I really wanted to like this game, but I just couldn’t get into it as much as I wanted to. I feel like I’ve been playing this same game for the last 10 years, except now is has a brand new coat of “shiny” on it. This is the next generation of gaming? If you are a Quake fan, you may get this just for the Q2 version, as well as a fairly enjoyable 10-20 hours of game play. FPS fans, or non-Quake die-hards, avoid Quake 4 and get Call of Duty 2 or Perfect Dark Zero instead.

This eight-year gap between Quake single-player offerings gave Raven the perfect opportunity to deliver something very special that not only reinvigorated the brand, but showed off next generation FPS design. That Quake 4 is merely a glossy, standard, by-the-numbers trudge through past glories is an irresponsible way to treat such a revered franchise; to then cock up the conversion to the 360 subsequently and then charge extra for the privilege is bordering on scandalous.

Space Marines -- you just gotta love 'em. Whenever humanity faces extinction at the hands of grotesque alien races possessing vastly superior technology these guys (and occasionally the token gal) get called into action. It's a thankless job, and one that 99% of the troops won't survive. But there's always that one guy -- the über-hero -- who single-handedly saves the day. If playing that role sounds like a better way to spend the weekend than a military documentary marathon then Quake 4 may just be your game.
GameSpy (Nov 28, 2005)
If you're looking for an exciting, intense multiplayer experience on Xbox Live, Quake 4 is sure to give you what you need. There's are some fun gametypes, especially the always entertaining Tournament mode. The multiplayer is enjoyable enough to ensure that you'll keep coming back for more. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of nice things to say about the single-player experience, which fails to deliver on multiple fronts. Still, if you want to check out one of the best multiplayer experiences the Xbox 360 has to offer, look no further.
Game Shark (Dec 12, 2005)
I guess I’ve been a little hard on Quake 4. I suppose one reason is that I’ve played so much on the 360 in the last couple weeks that I have come to expect a lot. Call of Duty 2 and Perfect Dark Zero are far better games in almost every way. Even King Kong supplies a better FPS single-player experience. If you really have to check out the latest Quake game, I’d suggest a rental. See if it can make you happy and then decide if you want to own it for the $60 it will cost you.
Overall, Quake 4 is a big disappointment. What was supposed to be a visually stunning, pulse-pounding shooter ends up being one of the dullest launch titles on the Xbox 360. The story is interesting enough to pull you through 10 hours of generic and brainless action, and the vehicular distractions are a quick and effortless blast, but that's about the furthest Quake 4 goes. If you're a Quake fan, I wouldn't question you if you rented the game but I'd have to frown down on anyone who decides to buy this game. There isn't enough here in terms of depth or new, modern shooter attractions. Pick up Perfect Dark Zero or Call of Duty 2 instead. Believe me, you won't regret it.
Gamekult (Dec 06, 2005)

For fans of the franchise, they'll make their way through Raven's latest entry hoping for something, anything special to happen. The deeper you travel, the higher the aggravation levels go.
